While I loved The Hunger Games series (except the ending), if your kid is not yet into dystopic fiction then I would hold off until he expresses an interest. Around where I live, most kids have read that series by 7th grade. That's great that you have the Percy Jackson series for him, those are terrific and funny, and I feel they keep a lighthearted tone. That author has numerous spin-offs (going into Roman, Egyptian, Nordic mythologies) too.
Some suggestions:
Artemis Fowl series - elite leprechaun forces
The Inheritance series (Eragon, etc.) - a less sophisticated version of Lord of the Rings, with the first book written by the author when he was 15.
The Alex Rider series - a British orphan teenager becomes a James Bond type character taking on missions to save the world
The Summoner Trilogy - another fantasy series involving an orphan wizard, elves, dwarves, and orcs.
The Giver series - about a society where everything is heavily controlled, a gentle intro to dystopic fiction (compared to Hunger Games)
Enders Game series - extraplanetary dystopic fiction
Animal Farm - classic Orwell disguised as a children's book
This reminds me that John Grisham has a few YA books that are pretty good.
Thanks! He loved the Wings of Fire series which is also about dragons. I actually have the next one pre-ordered for 12/26/18. I’ll have to empty his bookshelves of finished Lego creations to make room for all of these new series!Late to the party, but I want to second The Inheritance series. I don't have kids but I am a voracious reader with eclectic tastes. I'll read just about anything in any genre. I've enjoyed the book discussion and catching up on the thread and seeing some of the recommendations which I have added to my TBR list sometime after I get through the 4th or 5th (lost count) reading of the Outlander series again which is definitely not for kids.
Oh yes! The Theodore Boone series is wonderful!
We leave tomorrow for Great Wolf Lodge in Co Springs but we are only there for a few days so we will be back home by the time you arrive. What are your plans in the Springs? I do think we are supposed to get some chilly weather soon. That will be a crazy change in temps for you!
All I’m going to say right now is if you’re even thinking about diversifying into Amex MRs, you should jump on this offer and apply. You may not get another chance. I pulled the 100k MR Platinum offer for my wife earlier this year, thought I’d get to it over the weekend when I had more time to sit down and fill out an app, and when I got back to it a few days later, all the Amex offers disappeared from my wife’s CardMatch. I’ve never been able to pull up the 100k MR Platinum on CardMatch again.
When you say Europe, where are you planning to travel? And where out west will you be visiting?
I am unprepared for this whole trip. I have no idea what we will be doing in CO, but it is my first time there so I am excited. We are staying at the Broadmoor, my DH has a conference and will be busy all day Monday and Tuesday.
Special times, huh!? I used Sonlight curriculum (maybe you have heard of it??) with my girls so I read aloud all day, every day....some of the most wonderful books that most have never heard of...and of course, all the Newberry titles, as Sonlight loves Newberry winners. Now I am too busy to do Sonlight with my boys but I try to keep a read aloud going.
We use Sonlight!
We went to Vero for the first time in late January. it was soooo relaxing! Dh is talking about going back as soon as we canI'm taking a last minute side trip to Vero Beach in the middle of our WDW trip next next week. I will be renting a car at the Swan for those 2 days. I was planning on using my CSR as I have not used the $300 travel credit yet. Please let me know if I am missing any other/better opportunities.
I've got to get onto that deal! It's in the same shopping center as a ShopRite (so much Chase Pay-ing)Wow I can't believe that Staples RMN deal runs through 1/31/19... do we really think it will last that long? I'm planning to stop at Staples this weekend while I'm out. I wonder if DH's BOA card has a Staples deal on it...

I don't know if you want to travel to eat scrapple. lol
Ok PP lounge and restaurant usage.... I've had a PP card for a couple of years and never really used that perk (!!!!) but upcoming trip is gonna take us thru LAX and BOS....both of which I see have lounges and restaurant options. I have a PP thru my CSR,so that covers me+2 fam members(?) and I also have 10 PP options from a Hilton card for our 4th fam member..... How do I use these? Just show the card at the restaurant of choice ,or lounge and get in? What else do I need to know? FWIW we'll be flying a combo of Jetblue,American and Alaska..... How many uses per airport visit is the pass usable for? Like if I'm at an airport for many hours b/c of a delay, can we visit a restaurant using PP,and then later on another PP restaurant? Or is it only one usage per airport visit?
Hahaha! My rule* is try it once! Biggest regret on my time in Beijing is I never made it to the market where they sold scorpions on a stick. (Although apparently that particular weird food craze is hitting state fairs so maybe I’ll see it in the US first?)
*I do have my limits- blood, organs, bowl of bugs- solid no!
