I love credit cards so much!

I am looking to book flights using UR. Transferring to AA or UA costs more UR than using the portal. However, the Chase travel portal is only showing Basic Economy when I want to book "main cabin" economy. Is this something I will have to call Chase in order to book? Is there a fee to do so?

Thanks! It would cost about 90k UR to transfer to UA and AA for the best deal on both. It costs 82k total to book through the portal (4 tickets).

UR doesn't transfer to AA. You can transfer UR to BA and book an AA award flight IF there is AA saver availability on that flight for the number of passengers. What you see on AA as far as how many miles you need will not be the number of BA Avios you need to book the AA flight. BA is distance based and if it doesn't show up on BA you have to call in with the flights. Depending on the distance it can be as few as 7,500 Avios each way.

P2 has the CSR and the CSP, so if we can combine the points I figured I'd take the card with the lower AF. Or that is the plan, anyway. I worry that we won't be able to combine points. It feels like every time we get something all the rules change (Chase ≠ Disney).

ETA - so far we have only used the Chase points to top off hotel points that we already had so we had enough to stay where we wanted to (both Hyatt and Marriott) for our upcoming trip. Also long term, I think we'd like to use the URs for hotel stays overseas (I'm a sucker for really nice hotels). No actual plan in place yet for the next "big" trip.

Oh that's perfect! I've used UR for hotel stays over seas too. More often, I've relied on free nights at Radisson Blu properties with anniversary points from the Club Carlson Card. They aren't The Ritz or The Peninsula but I've been pleased with each one so far.

Good plan getting the card with the lower AF for you since you already have the CSR for the redemption....I’m sure you are already transferring your husbands CSP points to his CSR.....it will mess with my plans if we can’t combine points so hopefully Chase wouldn’t change that ...

I think the difficulty some of us are having in giving effective advice is that you’ve signed up for cards we wouldn’t typically recommend for your desired goals. Please don’t take that the wrong way - I know you acknowledged that you may have made some missteps as a newbie (and that’s ok).

From what I recall, you are looking for flights for February. Given that fact, I would eat the PayPal fee and hit your MSRs as soon as possible. The sooner you earn your bonuses, the sooner you can lock up that ticket price with SW (and as time goes along it could go up). I’d probably focus on hitting the CSP first (that’s just my gut instinct).

Don’t sweat a mistake early on here either. Once you’re past these initial bonuses we can help advise on cards To get in the future to make this easier.

Thank you. This is my gut instinct too, but I am disappointed that I won't be getting as much of a savings with what I have. I got so excited seeing the possibility that we jumped on the first thing we saw that could get us our flights for this trip, which is still a very exciting idea for me! I will for sure be getting advice for our next moves before applying for anything once we deal with these ones and this trip. Thanks for the friendly help!

Ok! There’s a lot here, so I wanted to take some time to respond.

I think I'm struggling because what I really want is URs, not MRs, because I'm trying to aggregate URs to get us to Europe in business class.

You say you want points to fly to Europe in business class. Have you searched awardhacker .com to see what airline points and award programs might work for your travel plans? It may give you some idea how to use your MRs.

I'd love to get him a CIC, but he already has 2 business cards with Chase - a SW Biz and a CIP (CIP was obtained in mid august). Our business is for real, but its small (renting out one apartment). He is 3/24. Think I can get him a CIC in November, or will that make the Chase gods angry?

But let’s try to shortcut this. If you want DH to get URs instead of MRs, I think he’s fine to apply for a third Chase business card. You said he’s 3/24, so not exactly a risky applicant. The other factors that seem to weigh heavily on approval is the spacing between DH’s cards and total credit lines on DH’s Chase cards.

How many cards (Chase and other reported cards) has DH been approved for in the past 3 months, 6 months, and 12 months? You said he got a CIP in mid-August. That’s almost 2 months ago. Did DH open any more cards that show up on his credit reports since then? If not, I think he’d be fine applying for a CIC as early as mid-October, certainly by November.

However, before DH applies for the CIC, I would take stock of the overall credit lines on his Chase cards relative to reported personal/household income. If his total credit lines are near or over 50% of the income that’d be reported on an application, he should proactively SM Chase to lower his credit lines before applying. The lower the better. Then, DH should wait until the statements on the cards for which he reduced the credit lines to close so that Chase reports the lower credit lines to the bureaus, and his credit reports reflect this lower exposure when he applies.

If I should hold off on Chase business cards for him, then do I just let go of the FOMO and get him the Biz Plat?

I've been wanting to get DH going with Amex, but have been trying to get the 100k personal plat offer (because I understand you're less likely to get that once you're a customer). No luck with cardmatch. So now I'm trying to figure out our next move.

I'm reluctant to get him started with Amex with anything other than the unicorn 100k personal plat because FOMO.

It’s long been the conventional wisdom that getting an Amex card, particularly an Amex MR-earning card, will decrease your chances of being targeted for the 100k MR personal Platinum card. However, about a week or two ago, there was a discussion on reddit questioning how true that is anymore (I tried to look for the thread, but couldn’t find it). Anyway, it seems existing Amex cardholders are getting targeted on CardMatch and Amex pre-qualified offers for the 100k Plat.

If you just take our small group right here, I know @wendow had at least the Business Gold Rewards card and was able to pull the 100k personal Platinum; and @disneymagicgirl already had a number of Amex co-branded cards when she pulled the 100k Plat offer. So perhaps getting Amex co-branded cards and business charge cards might not really preclude you from pulling a 100k Plat offer one day.

I could do the personal for the public offer (60K), but I can't refer him, and a $550 AF isn't that appealing.

Why can’t you refer him?

You have the Biz Plat, right? Have you heard that Amex referrals are “universal” now? From an Amex non-cobranded card, you can generate a referral link that lets the applicant apply to any of Amex’s 29 cards.

So from your Biz Plat, generate a referral link, then open it in a new incognito window. At the top, you should see a drop down menu to “View all Cards with a Referral Offer,” click “Looking for a Personal Card,” click “Reward Points,” and you should see the 60k MR Platinum card. The Biz Plat earns a large 15k MR referral bonus (capped at 55k MR/year) for an approved card. So you could refer DH to the 60k MR Plat, and earn 15k MR. The 15k MR would go into your MR account, and DH’s 60k MR would go into his account.

If you prefer all 75k MR go into DH’s MR account, you could try to pull the 75k MR Plat offer in incognito mode.

If you had DH sign up for the Plat in late November or December, he could triple dip the $200 airline fee credit in December 2018, January 2019, and January 2020 for $600 worth of AA, Delta, or SW gift cards before the second year AF is due.

I'm thinking about the gold card (probably not in rose gold ), because the grocery store points sound good.

Keep in mind that the Amex Gold card will add to DH’s */24 count, so if you have any cards you want from Chase, you should probably focus on those first.

The Amex Gold has a 50k MR offer through incognito and referrals that’s good until 1/9/19. (Similarly, like I mentioned above, you can refer DH to the Amex Gold from your Biz Plat for 15k MR to you, and a 50k MR welcome bonus for your DH.) And even after that, I’d guess the 50k MR offer would continue to be one of those targeted offers that one can pull via incognito. So unless you want to start a triple dip of the Amex Gold’s airline credit this year (in which case, apply in late November or December) to get all the value you can out of one AF, there’s no rush. And if you think you may end up keeping the Amex Gold beyond its first year, then the value of the triple dip doesn’t really matter.

Or I could get him a Biz Platinum (public offer is 75k, so no point in referring him). Not scared of a 10k MSR at this point in the year (have a business expense that I can pay/submit for reimbursement that will take a big chunk out of that).

Have you tried calling the direct lines to ask if the 100k MR/$10k MSR Biz Plat offer is still available? I saw a DP last week of someone calling in and being told the offer is 75k MR for $20k MSR, but the DP wasn’t clear what number they called. We have numbers to a few direct lines, so it might be worth a few HUCAs.

As I mentioned above, it doesn’t seem like holding an Amex biz charge card kept @wendow from pulling the 100k MR personal Plat offer.

At least you guys get why I'm obsessing over this decision... most people would just think I'm a weirdo for the amount of mental space this question has been occupying.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the suggestion! I was looking at BA to get AA award space and this is what I found. The cash price is only $100 one way for AA which would equate to 6.6k UR through the portal per ticket, and 7.5k BA Avios + taxes to transfer. Same scenario for UA.

Just one data point here, but we used MRs to get 3 business class tickets to Europe this summer and there were quite a few options when we booked.

Good to know. I figure I'll use the MRs for flights and the URs for hotels. Not sure where (maybe Australia or Asia, or maybe back to Europe) so I think having lots of options would be good. Over water bungalows would also be nice LOL :cloud9:

Great, helpful post, as always Lain!

Yep, totally able to pull that 100k offer even with the BGR. And can I just say...while y'all are all gushing over the rose gold card, I cannot stop admiring my plat. It's so sturdy, strong and beautiful. I'm sure the cashiers look at me strangely when I pull it out to pay but get lost in feeling how lovely and heavy it is :rotfl:Seriously, I think it's the most beautiful card ever. I'm not sure I'll be able to let go of it in a year!

With that scenario, I'd be booking via the UR portal and paying with points. Not only is it less points, I's be getting the butt in seat miles. The only way I'd burn the Avios is if they were already in my account and I had no other use for them.

I love options! My plan As don;t always pan out so I like to have Plan B, C and D when possible. I can't wait to try out the OWB! So excited!!!

I have taken to utilizing the @SouthFayetteFan approach and taking a gas can to the pump. It's handy to have that gas on hand anyways for the lawnmower and/or when I forget to fill up in town (closest gas station is 15 miles away). It may be worth investing in a 5 gallon can to maximize your fuel point savings.
Definitely when we have a place. DH and his dad are both very in the moment people when it comes to that. Also apparently there is a law that gas cans can only go in truck beds :confused3
If I go the Swagbuck route, how easy is it to cash Swagbucks into Disney Gift cards? I haven't tried swagbucks yet.
@afan has you covered :)

I forgot to mention, since you have a Biz Plat, is if you pay with points for airfare on your selected airline in any class, or any other airline in business or first class, you'll be rebated 35% of your points back (getting you 1.54 cent per point value). This may or may not be a better value than transferring MRs to a partner airline to book business award seats, but it's another option.

Unfortunately, there's no way to transfer DH's MRs to you if you want to combine points to pay from your Biz Plat. However, if one of you are an AU on the other's Amex MR cards (I'd suggest making one or each of you an "employee" cardholder on the other's Amex MR biz card so it doesn't add to */24), you can transfer your MRs to your spouse's frequent flyer account and combine points that way.

So I did not carry my AMEX Schwab Plat for long...but while I was meeting the MSR I will say I felt like a somebody.

The most embarrassing moment I had with the card though was trying to use it at a Gabe's. (If you don't know what a Gabe's is...well it's one of those department stores selling "second quality" merchandise, irregulars, etc.) Needless to say, they don't accept AMEX and the cashier at this store had probably never seen or held a Platinum card before, LOL!

EDIT TO ADD: Embarrassing because the cashier assumed my card was DECLINED (not realizing it was because they don't accept AMEX...and probably also not realizing that the AF on the card was about 20x the amount I owed for a couple pairs of basketball shorts)...

Keep in mind that once you complete the MSR on your CSP card, it could take about a week for those points to go "pending" and then you'll have to wait until your next statement closes for the points to post. Only then can you transfer them to SW and book flights with them. That's why you want to expedite hitting that MSR if you can.

I admittedly have never had a Capital One card BUT I believe you can erase purchases made in the past 90 days on that card. You could actually buy some of those SW flights now probably and then erase them once you earn your bonus. Those flights purchased now could even count towards your MSR! I'm not 100% sure I know what I'm talking about there, but I think I do, lol!

Shouldn't be, that's part of how we afford what we do. There's nowhere like that near me, but if it was stuff that's not noticeable I'd buy it. Not that different from TJ Max, Nordstrom Rack etc. Be impressed by my expensive thing but I probably saved 25-50% off by buying it where I did, making it so I can afford the quality. Now I do feel silly using my CSR for fast food, but thankfully I can use an app to do that :D

Yes! I almost wish I had to hand it to the cashier, like in the olden days, so they could feel just how great this card is :D It's so silly. I thought the CSR felt great but man, I do love the Amex plat. Total fangirl over that card!!

Just curious when you signed up for Hancock Whitney promo? Did it have direct deposit requirement? I just opened my account a couple weeks ago and want to avoid changing my DD with my employer if possible. I cant find and DPs on DoC about what qualifies as a DD

No direct deposit requirement - you just had to make 10 transactions with the debit card they send you and maintain a $250 balance every day to avoid fees (I dipped below this threshold for like two days and was charged $10, so that was annoying). I think I signed up for it in mid-July? Met the requirements the day I got the card and had to wait a month or two to get the bonus. They're notorious for dragging their feet, apparently. I should be able to withdraw the money and close the account at Christmas. You can check it out at Doctor of Credit's page for Best Bank Account Bonuses.

Oh I love Gabe's - If you guys know me, I'm all about saving money!

The "embarrassing" part was having a card not work. The cashier assumed it was because my card was declined (they probably get A LOT of that at the store we were at, if you catch my drift ;))...She was very blunt about it while saying "Your card was declined, do you want me to try again or do you have one that will actually work"...Meanwhile my dad was laughing hysterically at me that I tried to use a Platinum Card at that store. I pulled out a Visa Gift Card and all was ok again, haha.

That makes way more sense and would be embarrassing. I hate when stores don't have the cards they take at the register or obvious. I had that issue in France because I was meeting spend on my amex so I wanted to use it when possible.
