I love credit cards so much!

I think it’s cause you are a teacher. Most people don’t think through what the contraction stands for.
Well teaching is good for something I suppose lol. I’ve been a grammar freak since I was little.

Then The double dip at 4/24 can be any two personal Chase cards you’re still interested in. United and Freedom? Maybe Southwest if that’s of interest... If you play his cards right (pun intended) you could double dip in mid-late 2019 and then you have 3 cards drop off by Jan 2020 and you could do a CSR/CSP double dip again for him in spring 2020.

!

I am constantly learning new things from everyone here! How often can you do the CSR/CSP double dip or other double dip?

You guys are giving me Hamilton envy—hopefully we’ll see it next summer in either London or Chicago.

Also, I should do a mini-review of the Hilton/Hampton Inn Majestic that's literally attached to the Hamilton theater in Chicago, but for the moment I'll just say that although it's slightly run down, the location more than makes up for any deficiency in swankiness. There's a designated entrance for hotel guests that gets you mostly to the theater entrance (we appreciated not having to wait outside in the snow) and we were able to pop up to our rooms during intermission, rather than waiting in the lines for the restrooms.

I know I posted about the Amex 10% off office supply stores offer the other day, but has anyone tried it at Wal-Mart? When I click on the offers, it has one of the addresses of nearby store's listed as my local Wal-Mart.

I was born there and from quite a large family...the two things that divided people (that I remember) were Royals v Cardinals and MissourA v MissourE.
Well, Grandma was not a baseball fan (or maybe a Cubs fan :scared1:) but she was definitely on the Missoura side. In Chicago, we just say Missouri

I'm venturing into using points for airfare. I've only used SW points to book flights, never had enough anywhere else to do it before  Trying to wrap my mind around how and where to look. Especially with all the partner options.

I'm in practice mode waiting for flights for next year to be released, this way I have an idea of what I should look for when the schedule drops. It will be one-way ANC>PHL (or maybe ANC>SMF, alternate depending on how the routes and points work) so I started out with Google flights for a rough idea, AS seemed to have best prices cash so I started there and will branch out. Trying to understand the award space after following along here. If we want to fly First on AS it's min 30k AS points, but if it's a mixed carrier with AA, it's flat 25k AS. Same awards are 30k AA through AA.

First Q: What's the better value, figuring out how to get 25k AS or 30k AA? We've got none of either to start. (I forgot when they expired and totally missed keeping them active. :headache:) But I believe we have transfer partners for both.

Second phase, when I started looking at both sites I noticed the AA award flight on AS's site doesn't show up on AA's site. For this date, all the awards shown on AA have multiple connections so at least 2 stops. When I look at the AS site the AA award flight is much better. It's only 1 stop, the first leg on AS the second leg a non-stop on AA. I can only find this flight for cash on the AA site.

Second Q: Does this happen? Is this what people are saying when it's easier to see space on a partner site? Does that sound like I could really book that on points through AS?

Would still have to work out later if it's better to just book the cash price through Chase using UR. For the date I'm looking at right now as an example, it's not, but maybe opening prices will make it a closer call. And I still have to look other lines. So much to think about :scratchin

Google flights is awesome for figuring out what airlines you may be looking at for a given route and if that is what you are doing then you are on the right track. The price is only a consideration if you plan to pay using points. If you are booking an award flight, the cash price doesn't matter. The airline's award chart does. Award hacker will also give you an idea. http://www.awardhacker.com

Now, to your questions: AA is a One World alliance and therefore a transfer partner of all other One World Alliance airlines. AS does not belong to an alliance but does have a good number of transfer partners, including AA. You mention you have transfer partners for both but I'm not sure what you are trying to convey here. Does that mean you have miles with a partner airline of both AA and AS, like maybe BA? If so, keep in mind BA has a distance based award chart and may cost you more BA Avios than a different partner with a different award chart.

It is easier to accumulate AA miles than AS miles. AS has 2 credit cards, 1 biz, 1 personal by BOA. The standard bonus offer is only 30K miles. SPG is the only other points currency that transfers directly to AS. AA has more credit cards with a higher bonus offer than AS. Barclay and Citi both personal and biz with 50k and up bonus offers. I took a look at your flights and I do see saver business/first on AA but that is 30K miles each way so you need 60K per person. I didn't see anything on AS that was less than 60K each way in first. I only saw main cabin awards for 25K and 30K. So whatever flight you found may not be available at that same award cost when you are ready. Do keep that in mind.

Second question: That generally refers to finding award availability on a partner airline that you don;t intend to book with because the airline miles you are using won;t show the partner space your are looking for. Booking Cathay Pacific with AA miles would be an example. AA does not ever show Cathay Pacific on their website for award booking. I have to look for the Cathay Pacific award flight on BA or Quantas. Then, once I find it, I can call AA and book that flight using my AA miles. Keep in mind sometimes partner airlines will show phantom award space. You see it there but it doesn't really exist.

Making the choice between using airline miles or using UR, MR points to book a flight comes down to a number of factors for me. Which one will cost me less in points, how much do I value said points and how easy are they to accumulate and do I have other more important plans for those points at the moment. I will use our flights to Antarctica as an example. When we initially booked our flights, they were 690,000 or so for the two of us total. Right now, the same flights are $7,953 per person so $15,906. I would need 1,060,400 UR points to book that. So AA miles is a clear winner. But even if the miles and UR points were the same, I'd likely use the AA miles because I value them less than UR.

I believe there are only 3 instances where you'd want to double dip with Chase (somebody correct me if I'm missing something)...
  • CSR/CSP - the most common double dip. You can only do this once every 24+ months (typically every 26-27 months since it's when you earned the bonus, not when you applied)
  • 2 SW personal cards - a recent addition to this list due to the 1 SW personal card rule. This is done to earn a CP. The CP can also be earned w/ 1 biz and 1 personal which DOES NOT require a double dip.
  • Double Dipping ANY 2 cards at 4/24 - you do this because if you applied for just one card you're now 5/24 and locked out of the other card. IF you are 4/24 BUT have a card dropping off fairly soon, it may make more sense to apply for 1 card. Go to 5/24, have the other drop off and THEN do the double dip.
You would never want to double dip unless it's necessary. There would never really be an occasion where you'd want to double dip a biz card and a personal card OR 2 biz cards...it just doesn't make sense.

It also is worth noting that in preparing for a double dip you likely want to sit dormant for at least 3 months prior. Hitting a Chase card one month and then coming back for a double dip the next month or 2 could be asking for trouble (in the best case a denial, worst case a shutdown).

EDIT: I will admit I'm not 100% up on all the new Marriott card rules as it's a not a concern of mine right now. Perhaps that's also an occasion for a strange double dip not described above...but I'd defer to somebody who can render a more expert opinion on that.

We must be only anti-Hamilton family. We much prefer Phathom of the Opera. Or give us some Harry Potter!

Phantom was DH's favorite musical ... until he saw Hamilton. He loves the show and the music. I do too but I'd say I am more fascinated with the brilliance of the writing/lyrics, the word play and the sheer genius of the show. I dare say Lin Manuel Miranda is the Shakespeare of our time.

I love hearing different pronunciations of things :) how about the midwest where some say worsh instead of wash? And my grandma always said fuh-thar instead or further

We have a few town names in NE that will call you out as a visitor. DH still pronounces Kearney as Kirney - any good nebraskan knows you pronounce it Karn-E! Also Norfolk - the L is an R in disguise ;)

I agree with this -- I am a fan of musicals generally (I have seen Phantom, Les Mis, and Wicked multiple times; my daughter and I saw Beautiful last year and we both enjoyed it) but Hamilton's appeal (to me) is a lot about how it tells the story of the country's founding in such a unique way.

Back from some beach R&R! I’ve sporadically checked in on the DIS but tbh what little time I spent on the Internet last week was on Twitter following $TSLA popcorn:: (Don’t have a horse in that race but it’s a great Wall St drama! And the participants make Reddit look like kindergarten- sheesh!! Even loudmouth me stays silent over there!)

Alas it means I’m just now hearing the latest on the Marriott packages, darn! I was really hoping they’d just say screw it, give us a bunch of points & be done. C’est la vie. I have a Cat 6 package & 120k Marriott points so I’m thinking of throwing them all at the package now & upgrading because I don’t really want a cat 6 hotel stay. Right now I’m thinking a week in Hong Kong on my way to the Maldives with my AS stopover?... was originally thinking if I could attach Greece or Italy for an around the world trip with my other miles stashed but then I saw mention of a SA Safari here and all this talk about London & Harry Potter- GUYS/GALS THERE IS SO MUCH I WANT TO SEE, ack! But, I want to see it all in style so I have to space it out. So much to think through...

Also did everyone see this story already? Idk not having been around but- O.M.G. Research, research, research BEFORE YOU TRAVEL!! https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news...ghter-in-dubai-over-drinking-wine-is-released

I'm thinking about applying for the Barclay Business jet blue card. I have read some conflicting things on whether it would report to personal credit and count against 5/24. Any experience with this?

I just got $200 from Capital One for opening up a money market account. Check doc..easiest bonus ever. Opened acct on 8/3, funded with 10k on 8/6, $200 bonus posted 8/9. No minimum length of account opening so closing it in 2 weeks and using the 10k to pay off my student loan.

Thanks, sounds like an easy one, I'm going to look into it! Really difficult for me to change my DD, so always looking for ones that do not require any DD requirement.

Aaaand instant approval. So I'm hoping to have the CIP in hand by the end of this week (5 business days? Maybe?)

I would call and try to get the CIP expedited, took much longer than expected for mine to come in the mail at least a week after I was approved, I just received my card last week.

I found a Cat 5 hotel to use my Marriott Cat1-5 cert on. But how do I attach? Do I have to call, or is there a way to do this on-line?

My father is carrying the contract for us to buy the property that has been in our family since the 1940's. Is there a way to set up the mortgage to be made to "John Doe" with Plastiq through my CIP listing it as rent? Can it be automatically paid into his checking account or does an actual check need to be snail-mailed? Any idea if there could be legal or tax issues if I state it's "Rent"?
