I love credit cards so much!

The inclusion of business cards in prohibiting the other cards is troubling because I fear that Southwest will be following suit.

It's worrying, definitely, but so far Chase's one card per family rules specifically omit the biz cards.

The belief is Amex and Chase aren't sharing data about what cards you have with the other issuer, Chase and Amex are getting the info from Marriott. I'm not sure if the info the issuers are getting distinguishes a consumer card bonus from a biz card bonus.

If this is Marriott's doing, they may be getting stingy with their points; but an interesting point from /r/churning is that Marriott may be trying to limit the free nights that come with these cards.

Little FOMO is making me think to try for the Marriott Plus before 8/26 even though it's "only" 75k. Against my plan, we just finished our MSRs and I wasn't planning on it until maybe October ish. ( that'd be about 6 months from the double dip, seemed reasonable) but otherwise I'm locked out 2 years :headache: My my how quickly plans change around here.

In similar news, got the official email from SPG on the program change. Confirmed CC changes taking effect 8/1 as stated, but point conversion 8/18. Makes me think the MR loophole may work.

CREDIT CARD UPDATES.

The updates to the SPG® American Express Cards will go into effect on August 1, as previously communicated, but the one-time point conversion in SPG loyalty accounts and Elite status updates will occur along with the broader Marriott® loyalty program updates, taking place on August 18."

That's the really crazy thing, Chase made the Ritz better and now.. they're yanking it.

Yeah, MS is a possibility. I've never looked into it around here, it makes me uncomfortable. But I could likely open a PNC account for her. PNC denied me a while ago, but I have many more new bank accounts. I bet if we waited 30+ days from her last account, she'd be able to get it.

I hope.

MSing isn’t to bad if you are comfortable. Chase is also so easy with allowing bank funding. It’s tricky getting MOs in this area for me, but I found one Walmart that works. And no one cares if I get the giftcards with my name on them.

How frustrating! I just checked and my Marriott points are in my account. My Marriott biz stmt closed 7/24. As a DP I met the msr in the first month (mostly thanks to Pnc bank funding) about 2 weeks before the stmt closed). I really hope you get your points soon!

Hm, starting to wonder if the wrong amount posted. Have to make hubby look into it. A couple days after the statement closed he did get 3 points ( yes 3) but that's about the same date he gets points from his regular card so I assumed he just made a small charge. Like really small cuz it's listed as the bonus category spend.
I know the account is linked cuz he got the 15 elite nights. Grr.

So strange. I was checking DH and my Starwood and Marriott accounts since we have had some recent stays. I see that his SPG points transferred to my account on 6/6/18 but his SPG balance wasn’t reduced so he still has a nice pot sitting there.

Along with everyone else, disappointed in the SPG Lux restrictions. That said, since I'm 20/24 including 5 Amex credit cards (two words-Delta medallion), I won't be getting a new card anytime soon and instead am focusing on what the cards are doing for me :)

We just returned from Barcelona and enjoyed our 2 free nights at the Hotel Arts R-C on the beach (R-C card). While we didn't have a suite, it appeared we were upgraded to a corner room (4 larger rooms at the corners v. standard hallways rooms) so that just sweetened the deal!

To repay DM for dog sitting, used IHG free night/points for two nights on the beach at a family friendly Holiday Inn-this was a big hit since she had DN with her and apparently their waterpark like pool is more fun than my boring pool :rolleyes2

I'm making plans for DD's graduation trip next June with DD and DM. So far,
booked PNS-PHL with Skypesos
use free night from Marriott card at PHL airport Marriott
booked PHL- BUD with AA (bright side of being a DL member...330 AA miles for 3 business class seats seemed like a bargain!)
booked MUC-PRG-MUC on AF to earn 25005 MR (Amex offer of 20,000 f0r $1000...able to get 3 rt in economy for $1001.53...yipee!)

and continuing to buy DGC at Walgreen's/Lowes/Staples etc with Amex offers/5X back to pay for our ABD River Cruise.

Our hotels in BUD/PRG are OOP and I'll either use a Starriott card or CSR, once my goals at that time are more defined. Three people in a room in Europe equals suite so no good use for Marriott free nights, sadly.

Waiting impatiently for DL to open up July so I can book MUC-PNS and hoping that EC/First will be palatable (depending on the day for reasons known only to Delta Economy Comfort is either 45,000 OR 125,000; Delta First either 82,000 OR 280,000:scared1:).

I'm okay with being in a holding pattern for getting new cards IF I know what the payoffs/outcome will be. Finishing up DD's Europe trip in 2019 is one and then Australia/NZ likely 2020 (or 21) is the second (hence the focus on MRs).

That said, really enjoying hearing about everyone else's approvals :)

Welp, pulled the trigger. Will be trying PNC funding next month. If for some reason that doesn't work, I will have questions.

First, congrats! Second, is the draw of the Business Platinum for you just the MR points? Since you cancelled the other ones the benefits were not enough of a draw?

I am in this weird holding pattern right now with what card to get. Trying to decide if I care about 5/24 with Chase. I also want to start with MR points. I can transfer them and help my sad Delta status. If nothing else they would be nice to have with the awesome Amazon promotions. I keep going back and forth which MR card to get. Just get the no fee Blue Business you all have talked about? Or just go for broke and all the miles and get a Platinum? If I figure I am getting 100k miles out of it I figure the $450 AF is "worth it" for at least one year.

Expanding on my earlier reply,

I love having an Amex Platinum, love its benefits – but it's a perks card more than a big earner that makes a card a “keeper” for ongoing spend for me.

So why cancel?

The big MR points that I get from holding a Platinum comes from the signup bonuses (and there are several varieties to churn through), not spend.

Back when MPX was coding as an airline ticket and earning 5x MR on the personal Plats, it would have been a no brainer for me to keep a personal Plat in my wallet. But Amex killed 5x MR on MPX. During that run, I put about $25k on my first Platinum -- most of it through MPX. Chump change compared to some MSers and 1%-ers, but I really think that spend helped get me a 30k MR, no spend required, retention offer. I should have taken it, but the AF was due at the same time the MB Plat was going to be discontinued. So I went for the 60k MR signup bonus on the MB Plat over the 30k MR offer to keep my vanilla Plat. I didn't want to be paying 2x $550 AFs, and the math on coming out ahead or breaking even on the Plat gets harder to justify in the second year.

Without meaningful bonus categories on the Plat – 5x MR on flights booked directly with airlines and Amex Travel, and prepaid hotels booked through Amex Travel – I just don’t see myself putting very much spend on my MB Plat beyond the MSR and Amex Offers. I’ll travel a few times a year, and for 3x UR, booking flights with the CSR comes with better travel protections, and I can usually find a better deal on booking hotel stays than prepaid through Amex Travel, never mind using points for air and hotel. Consequently, I don’t expect a good retention offer this year.

Which is fine, because Amex has other flavors of Plats to churn through that’ll continue to give me the perks I love. I just picked up the Biz Plat for 100k. I’ll go for the Charles Schwab Plat after that for another 60k signup and because of its cash out ability. (I remember reading a few months back that a blogger was able to get the Morgan Stanley Platinum on some low-cost account without having to have millions managed by Morgan Stanley. Might be worth looking into.)

The problem though is if I want to keep the perks from a new Plat almost every year, it’s going to cost me a slot with Chase. I’m 4/24, with cards dropping in December and February. There are still Chase cards I want, which has slowed me down with Amex but I might be ok going past 5/24 next year.

Which card for you?

I don’t think you can go wrong with either a 100k MR Platinum or the Blue Business Plus (“BBP”).

Keep in mind the personal (“vanilla”) Plat has a public offer of 60k, incognito offer of 75k, and a highly-targeted offer of 100k, after $5k spend in 3 months, with a $550 AF; and it’ll cost you a slot with Chase when it reports about 2 months after opening. The personal Plat comes with a few extra benefits not on the Biz, like $200 in Uber credits ($15/mo, $35 in December) and a $50 Saks statement credit. We’ve broken down the benefits vs. the fee previously.

The Biz Plat has a public offer of “up to” 100k if you meet a tiered spend totaling $25k in 3 months. The call-in offer that was reported on reddit, posted on DoC, and I got approved for is 100k/$10k/3 months for a $450 AF, which is about the best offer on this card in a while. And, as a biz card, it won’t show up on your credit report or count against 5/24. I was on the phone for about 18 minutes total, spoke with a nice rep, said I was interested in the Biz Plat and understand there’s a 100k MR/$10k offer, he confirmed that offer is available right now, he asked about my business – I went with my online sales/resale business because I’ve been doing a lot of that lately and had my numbers (I did have over $11k in sales last year, others have been approved with much less revenue) and story ready – asked about how I planned to use the card – inventory to increase my online sales – expenses – varies by season, market prices and trends, lots of reading from long disclosures, asked me the same questions as on the online application, more long disclosures, submitted the application, pitched me other Amex cards, and approved. Yay! It was a lot less harmless than I expected.

The BBP is a no fee card that can hold your MRs, but it’s also a solid daily driver because it earns 2x MR on everything up to $50k/year. And it’s a biz card that won’t report to your credit report or count against 5/24. I still want the BBP, but I keep pushing it out since I have other MR-earning cards open and my Chase cards usually earn me better than 2x.

There’s a 20k MR/$5k/3 months targeted offer, and there’s a 10k MR/$3k/3 months public offer, which you’ll notice has a lower MSR. The public offer is the same as the referral offer on this card, so if you’re interested in that offer you should go through a support link instead. If you want to try for the 20k offer, see if you’re targeted at DoC’s links above, call in to ask for it, or someone commented on DoC that you can get targeted for the 20k offer if you log into your Amex account, start a BBP application but not finish it, then wait for Amex to send you an email with the 20k offer.

This is a lot longer than I intended to write, but I hope it helped!

Can you remind me what this was about? We have 14k MRs that I could transfer over.

So if I am reading that chart @Lain posted correctly, it looks like DH and I would be fine for the SPG Lux or he would be fine for the SPG non-lux (I already have it). Neither of us have any marriott cards.

Sign her up and MS it if you have to?

I don't know... VFTW's chart includes the Marriott Biz bonus within the last 24 months as disqualifying for the SPG Lux. If you can't get the Lux, get the RC while you still can? Both are $450 AF cards that offer the 50k FN, but isn't the RC supposed to be an all-around better card > SPG Lux?

I guess I haven’t had enough coffee, so please help me understand. DH got the 2 Marriott & SPG personal - all since Jan. He doesn’t qualify for any of the cards correct?

Little FOMO is making me think to try for the Marriott Plus before 8/26 even though it's "only" 75k. Against my plan, we just finished our MSRs and I wasn't planning on it until maybe October ish. ( that'd be about 6 months from the double dip, seemed reasonable) but otherwise I'm locked out 2 years :headache: My my how quickly plans change around here.

I was thinking the same thing. Before 8/26, I still qualify for the Marriott Premier Plus, even though it's only 75k. My wife has no Marriott cards, so she can get the SPG Lux (rumored 125k) and still get the SPG personal (rumored 75k).

Getting the Marriott Premier Plus will put me at 5/24 until a card drops off in December 2018, and I'd be eligible for a CSR/CSP double dip in February 2019, but I kind of want to cancel the Marriott Biz when it hits a year in Feb/March 2019 and go for the CIU (if it’s still 50k) instead, which means I may have to put off a double dip if I want to space out my Chase apps. Getting the Marriott Premier Plus will add another $3k in MSR while we're still trying to finish the $5k on the Hilton Biz and $10k on my new Biz Plat.

We had been eyeing the CIU for DW in mid-August, but I don't yet know how to fit that in with the limited time SPG Lux offer and ~$15k of MSRs already. Seems like we can save the SPG Personal for later because getting the SPG Lux doesn't look like it'll disqualify DW from the SPG personal, and 75k seems like the standard base offer these days.

Just confirmed on my acct, MSR is complete on my CIP. Looking ahead to a possible double dip on the Sapphires in October. Question: what is the range of credit limits I can expect on those two cards? I know I’ve seen them listed on DoC’s site in the past but can’t find them now.

I think the minimum for approval is 5k for the CSP and 10k for the CSR. My SO got approved for both with high limits but they both got reduced to 4K each a few weeks later.

Can you remind me what this was about? We have 14k MRs that I could transfer over.

They updated the MR program T&C regarding MR > SPG conversion rates to align with the new program. The change for that goes into effect on 8/1, so starting then MR > SPG is 1:1 instead of 1000:333 (in 1k increments still). Unless they do something like hold the transfers until after the new program starts, seems like between 8/1 - 8/17 you can transfer 1:1 and then after 8/18 when your Starpoints balance converts to points they'd be multiplied by 3. Right now looks like if you time it right you'd get 1:3.

I've never transferred MR to partners, can anyone tell me how quick is it usually? Couple days? I don't have enough to match the 75k from getting the Marriott Plus but then again I wouldn't be paying a $95 fee either. :scratchin

Minimum opening credit line on the CSP is $5k; CSR is $10k. Anecdotally, depending on credit worthiness, you might expect a CL range of $5-20k on the CSP, and $10-30k+ on the CSR. Most people apply for the CSR first, so they'll get a huge credit line, which could impact how much credit is left to be extended on the later CSP application. Recently, Chase has manually reduced the CLs on both cards following approvals on a double dip, likely to mitigate their credit exposure.
