I love credit cards so much!

Wait... so you know @calypso726 IRL? I’m going to need some time to process this (and the rest of your post!).

Lol, yes! We've overlapped on a couple Disney trips :) we have similar travel patterns, although we beat her to China by a year. I was hoping they'd move it up a year so we could be on another trip with them, but no cigar lol. I hang out a lot on the ABD forum too.

I know Calypso IRL too. Does that make me a rock star by proxy? Same two trips as CaliforniaGirl, which wouldn’t be a shock to anyone who knows us, lol :)

My goals are definitely miles for flights with UR or MR and getting more than 1x for everyday purchases. You are totally right! I'm definitely missing a hotel card, but oddly with all the travel we do, I rarely pay for hotels directly. Usually we are doing group tours or we are staying in vacation homes or flats. Great point about the transfer rate with spg though--I'd forgotten about that. I think they transfer to united, too, which is great for us.

Metal cards are definitely not a priority lol.

The transfer ratio from SPG to United is really bad though (less than 1:1). That’s why I haven’t pulled the trigger on SPG. But I’m working up to it.

The closest Walmart to me is the one in Mountain View, at least 40 mins away. Once you get down to the South Bay and circle back up the East Bay, there are a lot more Walmarts and Neighborhood Markets, but I wouldn’t waste time, gas and toll like that. Not that I’d like to see Walmarts all over the place, but does Target really need two stores, less than 5 mins across from each other on the 280, in Daly City and Colma?

Mountain View! That's the one I was thinking of. I lived off 280 in my two apartments in SJ so if I went to Walmart it was to that one.

There's two Target's now? That's the one thing I liked about SJ that I had 3-4 Targets within about 15 minutes of each other. Find something great on clearance and want more or it's not in your size go to another. I can imagine they are both busy enough in that area that it makes sense even though it seems silly. Also makes sense there are more walmarts in the east bay and east part of the south bay vs being on the peninsula. But enough talk about this, though I know how it can make things difficult for you to do some deals.

You guys are so awesome with your advice, I’d love to get your thoughts on my strategy/plans.

A little background …
We have been modest travel hackers for a few years, since being introduced to the concept by Calypso whom we have been lucky enough to travel with a couple times. We are a family of four. Although our daughter is now in college, she still travels with us for most of the trips.

We travel a lot. A lot. Last year I think I was home about 50-60% of the time :) Mostly Europe, Hawaii, and trips to WDW/DLR, but we also have more far away trips like South America and Asia planned in the near future. Calfan and I also love to do girls’ hiking trips. I have the companion pass for the WDW/DLR trips, and it has been fantastic. I’m hoping to use it for Hawaii by the end of the year before it expires, but my husband is planning to get it after me so one of us will be able to take advantage if they extend it to Hawaii.

We used to redeem for mostly saver economy awards on United, but after experiencing Business Class on British Air (cash) to London and United First & Polaris Business (award tickets) back and forth to China, we are all hooked. As my mom said, it’s hard to get the girl back on the farm :)

I always have a few flights for trips that I’m working on. I don’t mind paying cash for good fares, but I’m hoping to build up our UR accounts to do RT business for Japan and/or South East Asia in 2019 with awards for United. As I mentioned in a previous post, I also do quite a bit of traveling to England so I’m usually using lots of AVIOS for British Air or Aer Lingus now.

Goal:
My goal is to maximize my URs and to a lesser extent MR’s, which I can also use for British Air or its “sweet spot” redemption for partner Alaska Airlines flights from the West Coast to Hawaii. The four of us recently flew to Maui RT for 100k miles total, which was such an awesome bargain.

My strategy:
I’m really trying to be more strategic about maximizing my return on purchases. I’ve been taking advantage of shopping portals for a while, but I’m trying to be more consistent with them. I’m also starting to take better advantage of the cards in my wallet already. My husband and I both have the freedom card (product change downgrade from CSP) but we hadn’t really done any category spending. We are just getting going on this, and after the disaster I posted about a few days ago, I think my husband is more on board. I think he was having Seinfeld nightmares of me sitting in 1st class next to a super model and him squeezed in a middle seat in coach LOL.

Prior to this, I’d been using my CSR for travel/food, and my BarclayArrival Plus as my every day card to get the automatic 2x on everything. I always have misc travel charges so it was an easy way of not having to think and getting redemptions.

But with the goal to maximize URs, I’d like to move most of the BarclayArrival spends to a Chase card that hopefully will get me more than 1x for everyday purchases. My husband is also happy to be in dual-player mode. He’s taken advantage of a few things over the past few years, but we can definitely up his game. We are both self-employed; i have an LLC so I’ve taken advantage of a number of business cards. DH hasn’t yet, but he shouldn’t have a problem with getting business cards either.

Our big categories of spend that aren’t getting us a lot of return are Amazon and groceries. I believe Amazon gift cards are sold at Office Depot so I may try to use my CI to get 5x for that. Groceries I believe are usually 2nd quarter for CF, but something for the rest of the year would be great.

We own at DVC. I've been paying our dues by auto-withdrawal, but I may switch to paying all at once to use Disney Gift Cards bought somewhere i can get 5x for them.

I’m also considering paying our taxes on my Business Platinum Amex to take advantage of their 50% bonus MR on purchases over $5,000. We always have a *huge* tax bill so this could be a great source of MRs. I think I can deduct the fees as a business expense, but I will confirm with our CPA before doing it. I rarely charge on that card (a few flights), but they didn’t bat an eye when I told them the amount. I may also call Chase and see if they’ll go for it. I figured AMEX would be easier, but I’d prefer URs as they are more flexible.

What’s in my wallet?
Chase DisneyRewards: 6/8 (hasn’t been used in years) Authorized User
Barclay Arrival (8/13)
Chase Freedom (8/13) downgrade from CSP: DH is authorized user
Chase Freedom (11/13) downgrade from CSP: I’m authorized user on DHs
BarclayCard Hawaiian Airlines (2/14)
Chase United Mileage Plus (7/14 )
Chase Ink Plus (1/16); my second. They gave me a second one and I got rid of the first. Two bonuses!
Chase Sapphire Reserve (8/16). I love this card. The 100k miles was awesome.
American Express Business Platinum: (1/17) I had the personal first and then got this one and got rid of the personal with no problems because I told them I liked the business better. 100k miles each so pretty awesome
Citicards American Aadvantage (1/17)
Chase Southwest Business Premier (2/17)
Chase Southwest Plus (2/17)

My credit score is excellent—I know that doesn’t necessarily matter, but I’ll put it out there.

So I have 8 current Chase cards and I think I’m 4/24 (assuming AMEX business doesn’t show up in credit reports).

Culling:
In the next month, I’m planning to get rid of the Hawaiian Airlines card (we don’t use it as much since we’ve been flying Alaska), the American Aadvantage (which I only got to try to upgrade seats to Peru and they never came through :( and BOTH Chase Southwest Cards so that I can churn them in two years for another CP. I should also probably get rid of me as an AU on his Chase Disney Card, but it's an old card so that's nice for credit score.

Will Chase view getting rid of them all at once as a negative? The problem is that all the AFs are due right now.

Filling in holes:
We don’t have a great “everyday” card right now. I was thinking that the CFU might be a good card for that to get me at least 1.5x UR. But, since I only have one slot, maybe it’s smarter to go for the big bonus with the CIP? The CIP overlaps with my CSR and CF but the Advertising could be nice. that would be my fourth business card (overall) with Chase though and I don’t really spend a lot on the business cards. Not sure what they’d say about that. I could also try to product change the Freedom to the CFU. We’d lose the $150/15,000 miles but better than having two freedoms? Any thoughts?

After using that last 5/24 slot, I’m thinking about doing the Chase British Air, but I’m worried that I may have too many Chase cards? I don’t want a shut down issue. I’m also considering the Starwood Amex but the current 25,000 bonus doesn’t seem very big.

I’d like to get at least one or two more cards now, and then be in free/clear position again for the companion pass in 12/20.

DH:
DH is in a better position Chase-wise, BUT he needs to reserve 2 Chase spots for the companion pass at the end of the year 12/18 (to be used in 2019 and 2020)

What’s in DHs wallet?
BarclayArrivalPlus (8/13) Authorized User on mine
Chase DisneyRewards (6/08)
Chase Freedom (8/13) Authorized User on mine
Chase Freedom (11/13)
Chase Sapphire Reserve (8/16)

So he has 4 Chase cards, but is only 1/24.

He’s also had in the past the Hawaiian Card, the Chase United Card, and the Barclay Arrival (his own).

Culling: Nothing

Filling in Holes:
Chase Business Preferred (BUT this could be a problem with 1/12 for Southwest CP in December?)
Chase United (I think he hasn’t had it for 2 years)
Chase Freedom Unlimited for use as an everyday card (see above about possible product change for either his or my freedom).
Chase Southwest Business (end of year)
Chase Southwest Personal (end of year/beginning next year)
Eventually he wants to do the Amex Personal Platinum—he gets 100k offers pretty often.

I would love any ideas you guys have and please let me know if you see any potential issues/problems. I don't want to make a misstep!

Whatever you do, do not get rid of the Ink+ since it is a UR "cash cow". I'd suggest having your DH get the CIC for the bonus. Since you also collect UA miles, are you using the United Mileage X app? It's a great tool to increase UA miles and you get a 25% bonus when you have a UA card linked to your account. You don;t need to pay with your UA card. @Lain has a nice write up on how useful it can be on the reddit Dischurners page. It is a must read if you ask me, especially given some of your card strategy planning.

DH has 2 Freedom cards and maxes them out every quarter. I have one and am able to max it most of the time. Between the 3 Freedom cards and our 2 Ink Plus cards they are our best strategies to increasing UR points. I also have the FCU and will use it periodically. DH and I tend to put most of my non category bonus spending on the SPG business card. SPG is our best airline card. 32 airlines with 1:1 transfers and they kick in an additional 5,000 miles for every 20,000 you transfer. This makes it a 1.25 earning card. We would not be flying SQ suites this summer to China if it weren't for this card. Alaska and BA are also transfer partners with SPG at 1:1 If you pick up the SPG business card then it should not affect your x/24.

Wait... so you know @calypso726 IRL? I’m going to need some time to process this (and the rest of your post!).

@CaliforniaGirl09 and @Calfan were on the ABD meets thread for Scotland and we also were on the same trip. So, I can say we've known each other since the beginning of my travel hacking journey! The coolest thing about the DISboards is that you get to know some of the nicest people online and are likely to meet them IRL on a Disney vacation of some sort. I'm looking forward to meeting some of the credit card peeps IRL someday. Everyone here is so nice!

Lol, yes! We've overlapped on a couple Disney trips :) we have similar travel patterns, although we beat her to China by a year. I was hoping they'd move it up a year so we could be on another trip with them, but no cigar lol. I hang out a lot on the ABD forum too.

If ABD does announce Japan this year, or DCL announces a cruise to Japan, I am hoping you guys decide to book. If so, we should coordinate dates. It'd be nice to be on an ABD or DCL reunion trip!

i honestly think your missing a hotel card...

SPG Amex, despite its low signups, its the most versitile card out there imo. its got 20+ airline partners at a transfer rate of 1:1.25, its got the 2nd biggest hotel chain in the world to your disposable.
Marriott Card also works too, but its not as great as SPG Amex imo. unless you consider a metal card a priority... ;)

idk though, u have any goals? maybe the destination is worth looking around.

Wait, what? SPG is a hotel card

+1 to Chase Fraud protection. DH was sitting next to me on the couch and told me he was going to use our CSP for his Ebay fees (haven't applied for CIP yet!). As he soon as he finished putting in the CC numbers, I received a text from Chase Fraud wanting to know if I had attempted a $1 charge at Ebay. It was literally almost instantaneous as to when DH entered the CC number! Glad they're on top of things.

Off topic non-churning credit card frustration rant:

I did a Kroger Clicklist purchase back on January 29. I had a pending charge of $106 show up on my CSP. When I picked up my groceries, the total was actually $92. This Wednesday I realized that the pending $106 charge was gone, and that I had never been charged the $92 for my groceries. This morning I wake up to a $108 final charge from Kroger and my CSP statement closed overnight

Miraculously, I still have my receipt showing I should have been charged $92. I'm going to take it to Kroger today to see if they'll issue me a refund and maybe give me anything for my trouble.

glad you save receipts... we are so bad at that.

It's pure luck on this one! Usually I do my Ibotta redemptions and then toss it. Good thing I haven't cleaned my house in a while so it's just been sitting on my couch's end table.

https://www.nbcconnecticut.com/news...egains-Lost-Credit-Card-Points-473664723.html

Personally, I don’t think the points should have been reinstated.
I'm guessing they're old folks. My mom would do something like that. She signed up for an SPG Amex, earned the bonus and wanted to transfer points to me. So it required changing her address to mine, waiting 30 days then transferring points. Only when she should get an email from SPG, she wouldn't tell me. Somehow the address change wasn't saved so the transfer wouldn't go through, only she never told me. I finally got the points transferred and she wants the card cancelled asap, as she can't handle 'so many cards' meaning 3 :rotfl2:

Well, here's one of those missed the boat moments. Yesterday I got to spend over $1500 on a car repair for my daughter, as she couldn't get to the shop in time to pick it up before they were closing. (She transferred the cash to my bank account.) They also wouldn't let her pay by phone.

I 'just' finished the spend on my Marriott. Really was wishing I had a new card to put this on!

The points of course are all in the family as we share a lot of vacations and eating out trips and I obviously spend on my two grandkids, so that is a non issue. We combine free nights to get trips, etc.

I have around $1k in bills for rental property. Really want to apply for SPG Business card but I also am meeting spend on another card and need to accrue cashback for a cruise. The addiction is real.

I did get some rewards - $15! And as I was leaving my house, my neighbor was going in the direction of the repair shop and dropped me off, thereby saving the extra car pick up trip. Love my neighbors!

@CaliforniaGirl09,

Your post shows a lot of careful thought about what you want to do with what you have and gaps to fill with what you might be missing, so I really want to try to reply with the same level of thoughtfulness. I was sort of where you were a year ago, wanting to be more strategic about maximizing the return on our spending so your goal really speaks out to me.

Getting straight to one of your later points, I don’t think a great “everyday” card really exists. I’ve looked. There are lots of cards out there. Some are great for some categories of spend, but not for others. So diversify your wallet, know what the category bonuses are for those cards and what points/miles they earn, and use them accordingly. (And for spouses who are slower to the game, we’ve found putting labels with the bonus categories on each card helps.) A great everyday card in that sense is a card you put spend on when it doesn’t fit a bonus category on any of your other cards, and preferably a new card on which you’re putting that spend towards a bonus, or a card that earns you a high value currency even at 1x (like SPG Starpoints).

So you say you want to build up UR (and secondarily MR) points and maximize return on everyday purchases. You’ll need to shift your spending habits. Instead of putting your everyday spend directly on credit cards, trying to figure out which card gives you the best return when you’re at a grocery store, vs. a movie theater, vs. a restaurant, vs. a clothing store, vs. gas stations, vs. Amazon; BUY GIFT CARDS to the merchants you were going to spend money at anyway using just two credit cards that specifically earn you 5x on, essentially, gift cards.

I’ll start with what you already have in your wallet. As @calypso726 already mentioned, the Ink+ is your cash cow. It earns 5x UR at office supply stores and phone, internet, and cable tv services. Staples and Office Depot/Office Max sells a wide variety of gift cards to retailer, restaurants, gas, online services and travel, including I think Amazon and Disney Gift Cards. Go to an office supply store, buy gift cards to merchants you were going to spend money at anyway, and earn 5x UR on every dollar spent. (Another tip in your search for a great everyday card is these office supply stores often run sales or rebates on Visa Gift Cards (“VGCs”), negating the activation fee and even saving you some money on the face value of the VGCs, in addition to the 5x UR earned on the purchase. You can then spend the VGCs where you’d otherwise only earn 1x.) Alternatively, Ink+ (as well as the Chase Ink Cash (“CIC”)) earns 5x UR on e-gift card apps/websites like Gyft and Swych when you checkout using PayPal with Ink+ (or CIC) set as the payment method. Gyft, for example, sells e-gift cards to Amazon, Target, and Walmart, each at face value, but you earn 5x UR on the purchase. (Other e-gift card platforms like Cashstar also earn 5x UR when using Ink+ and CIC. Gyft, Swych, and Cashstar all earn 3x UR on the Chase Ink Preferred (“CIP”)). This tactic essentially shifts your card’s 5x earning power from office supply stores to almost everything else.

(Note that when you buy something with a gift card vs. your credit card, you are foregoing the consumer protections available on your credit card, e.g., price and purchase protection, extended warranty, charge backs and dispute processes. So consider this when purchasing goods vs. using gift cards to pay for services.)

I believe @calypso726 uses a mix of this tactic to pay her DVC dues, which are significant, and you should do this instead of direct debit! Buy Disney Gift Cards at an office supply store using Ink+, earning 5x UR; then use those Disney Gift Cards to pay DVC. (There are other ways to get better deals on Disney Gift Cards – there’s an entire thread on the subject – but Ink+ at office supply stores is probably the most direct. You could, alternatively, buy a Walmart e-gift card using one of the apps, then use the Walmart gift card at Sam’s Club (if you’re a member) to buy Disney Gift Cards that are discounted ~4%. Or you could have taken advantage of the recently expired Chase deal that earned 10x UR when you use Chase Pay with the Freedom, CSP and CSR at Best Buy for purchases – including Disney Gift Cards – up to $300. Chase Pay also had a 10x UR deal at Best Buy and Walmart .com in December 2017).

A different take on the above tactic is using the MileagePlus X (“MPX”) app. I see you have a United MileagePlus card. Great! Connect it to the MPX app to earn a bonus of 25% more United miles on any purchase from the app, whether you charge it with the United MileagePlus card or some other card that earns you better credit card rewards on your MPX purchases. As @calypso726 pointed out, I have a write up about using MPX with the right card(s) on the /r/DISchurners subreddit, so I won’t repeat it here.

You said you spend a lot on Amazon. You can buy Amazon gift cards on Gyft, Swych, and MPX, and I believe in office supply stores. Load them into your gift card wallet on Amazon and apply them to your purchases. But there’s more! You could be earning 3x TrueBlue miles by shopping on Amazon through JetBlue’s partners portal: https://www.doctorofcredit.com/earn-3-jetblue-points-per-dollar-amazon-purchases/ (I’d note however, that there have been a lot of complaints that TrueBlue points from Amazon shopping take a long time to post or don’t seem to be tracking/posting.)

Relatedly, you can use Amazon gift cards to buy third-party gift cards (excluding Amazon and Visa gift cards). This is useful because I find that office supply stores and the gift card apps don’t tend to sell grocery store gift cards. Amazon sells Whole Foods and Safeway/Albertsons gift cards, which I can easily use here in California. For grocery stores, sometimes I’ll use the VGCs bought from promos offering 5x or more, like I mentioned above.

Moving on. Yes, use shopping portals for all your online shopping! Check cashbackmonitor.com to see if your merchant has a portal and which portal is offering the best rates in cash back, miles, or points.

For United miles, have you considered joining their survey clubs and MileagePlus Dining (where you connect any card – I’d suggest the CSR for 3x UR on dining – and earn United miles on top of your credit card rewards when you use that connected [CSR] card to dine at participating restaurants)?

As for business cards, since you have a legitimate LLC, I would really suggest you consider applying for the CIP, even if it would be your fourth Chase business card. You already know about the big 80k UR bonus. (You should eventually refer DH for his own CIP and another 80k UR signup bonus, with a 20k UR referral for you.) And it won’t add to your */24 count. However, the main reason I’d recommend the CIP is because of Plastiq. Plastiq is a bill payment service that lets you use a credit card to pay almost any kind of bill with a 2.5% fee. Currently, and for some time now, the CIP has been earning 3x UR on what seems like all categories of expenses paid through Plastiq (you may want to make a small test payment to verify). It’s the only card known to do this (this could change at a later date as with anything else in this game). Since you have a business, you likely have bills to pay. You could be earning credit card rewards on those expenses and fee (possibly, 3x UR with the CIP!) and writing off the fee. Plastiq’s CEO did a AMA (Ask Me Anything) Q&A on /r/churning subreddit yesterday and noted: https://www.reddit.com/r/churning/comments/7weuyq/im_eliot_buchanan_ceo_of_plastiq_ama/du02r7y/

[O]ur fastest growing spend is all b2b - think large/bulk suppliers for construction, pharmaceuticals, medical supplies, agriculture, corporate health insurance. Business owners love our service because they write off the 2.5% fee so after tax it's well under 2% and then they get the benefit of float/flexibility of their card. So we are seeing $100k+ spend from individual business owners, some closer to $1m+ monthly.

Plastiq sends checks and sometimes electronic payments to your payee, but has really been upping their efforts to attract small businesses by offering ACH payments and expedited delivery and tracking expected soon.

You could also pay your taxes with CIP through Plastiq, but you’d have to evaluate whether the (potential) 3x UR earned on CIP with a 2.5% fee through Plastiq outweighs the 50% MR bonus when paying with your Amex Platinum Business with a 1.87% fee through Pay1040 .com.

You can also use Plastiq to pay other expenses like tuition and student loans, utilities, rent, and YMMV with mortgages and car payments (Visa and Amex have imposed restrictions on what categories of payments Plastiq can accept on their cards).

Again, Plastiq charges a 2.5% fee for payments made with credit cards, but the 3x UR (equal to 3¢/$1) earned on the CIP would put you ahead if you decide you want to redeem your UR points (1 point = 1¢) for cash to pay off those fees. Basically you are buying 1 UR point worth 1¢ for 0.83¢. If you decide to keep the points and transfer them to the CSR, they are worth 50% more when redeeming on the UR portal, so 3x effectively becomes 4.5x worth that more than offsets the 2.5% fee. That’s a pretty good deal!

For P2P payments, Venmo earns 3x UR on the CIP. Like Plastiq, you’re negating the 3% fee with 3x UR earned.

I think this covers most of the holes in your spending and optimizes the use of the cards you do have. As for the cards you should really consider getting: the Chase Ink Preferred (signup bonus and ability to refer DH, business and other expenses through Plastiq, won’t add to your */24 count); Amex SPG Business (won’t add to your */24 count with Chase, SPG points are valuable, but current 25k Starpoints signup bonus is a lukewarm offer); and Amex Ameriprise Platinum (see my post in /r/DISchurners, but will add to your */24 count).

Please consider using a DISchurners link to spread some goodwill back to this community whenever you can. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to post. We’re here for you!

Good luck!

Question for the AmEx experts out there.

We want to eventually cancel hubby's AmEx Green card but he applied for a new AmEx Cash card. We don't use MR pts much so he's got a bunch accumulated that I'd like to keep rather than cash out. I don't suppose you can transfer MR to another person?
If I knew what we might want to use them for I'd just transfer them into another program, but in case we don't have a plan by the time the AF comes due this year I'd like a backup option. (which is hopefully not him applying for another MR card :( )

I don't suppose it'd be easy and I just make him AU on my card, add that card to his existing online account, badda bing badda boom, transfer to me ? :P

Jeez, another question.

I know inquiries aren't the evil that they used to be on credit reports, where too many in a short period would get you shut down. But how does pulling other credit types affect the credit cards? Or I guess what's the time period for in general adding to your total credit extended ?

I recently got a Home Equity loan to take advantage of the low rates and get several big projects done without freaking myself out about how much savings is being depleted at once. As we narrow down the contractors, if they take CC for the deposits I'd like to use that to meet min spends on a couple new cards, but we'd only apply if we can do that. (CSR/CSP double dip is calling my name, hehe, but can't make both mins at once with normal spending) So the applications would most likely be after the new loan shows up on the credit report. This means I'd have a HP in Jan and new credit line in Feb (maybe March? but I'd think they'd be quick to report that)

Would it be too soon to apply for new credit? Would I look like a risk? The loan's only in my name so I guess worse case would be hubby applies for the cards, but he's got 2 new CC's as well (SW in 12/17, Amex in 1/18)

Nope you can't transfer to your MR AFAIK. The everyday card is no fee and earns MR. Or just call and try to get fee waived first. Amex is generous with their fee waivers.

Chase is inquiry sensitive. Not just for cards.

Woo hoo! Just had my SAHD husband apply for the CSP and he was instantly approved. So relieved it was that easy!! Thanks to all who provided advice on that one and relieved my anxiety. We used Other for source of income and wrote in Household Income, and he put stay at home parent for his employer. We added my daughter as AU to get an additional 5k points. So glad to be in 2-player mode :)
