I love credit cards so much!

its usually advisable that you dont cancel any cards. When you do cancel your card, your total utilization goes down and this will hurt your credit score temporary. cancel your SW Plus after you apply may be the best idea. As for your checking account, if you can afford the amount in it, i would just keep it around while applying for chase cards... i believe your relations with chase can help you get cards. this is unproven though. If you hit a 30 days, call and find out why, if its a too much credit, you can ask chase to move your SW Plus credit limit over to the new card, then cancel SW plus card. if i recall correctly, you just need to be 0/30 for business card, u can apply for 2 personal cards at once. depending on what your position is (5/24? 4/24? etc), you could maximize your chase apps and apply for 2 cards. As for 50k, yes it looks like its referrals only, but i did see a Plus public link. But many people here have referrals link for SW card. If you have access to our reddit page, you can find the referrals there. it would help someone out here with gaining more SW points!

Chase closing accounts seems to be triggered by 2 events. you are waaaay over the 5/24 limit and you apply for a non 5/24 card... or... you hit chase really hard within 1-2 years.(ie hitting 5/24 status quickly)
as for business expense, i dont think chase checks. you should be fine.

Howdy! Welcome to the thread :)

The Chase rule is 1 biz card in 30 days and 2 personal cards in 30 days so if you got the SW biz in Dec, then you need to wait until it's been over 30 days to apply for the SW Premier card. When will your SW plus annual fee hit? I would hold off on canceling the card until the annual fee hits and the 3k anniversary points hit. Cancel the card within 30 days after that and you will get all the annual fee back but keep the points. I do think the Premier is only 50k bonus through a referral at this point. Check out the DISchurners reddit forum for referrals!

I am not sure about your chase checking account. Why are you wanting to close it? I'm thinking you are fine to close that if you choose and that should not affect your credit card apps.

I've read a bit about the Chase shutdowns. It seems to me that most are MS'ing or opening a lot of accounts. I do neither and I am just not terribly worried about it right now.

Thanks so much for your responses! To explain a little more, I'm at 4/24 now (assuming the SW biz card doesn't count towards the 5/24 - correct?). I'm hoping to make the last Chase card count as I won't be under 5/24 again until Nov. 2018. The Plus card actually already renewed in Dec. and I paid the annual fee, I just don't really have a reason to keep it and would like the annual fee back, plus I'd I'd like to be able to apply for it again in 2 years or so. As for the checking acct, I don't really use it for anything, I solely signed up for it for a bonus, and it's just kind of a pain to transfer money every paycheck. Also I'd like to be eligible for another signup bonus sometime if it's offered, and I believe you have to have not had an acct for 6 months. I'll keep both open until I apply for the Premier and then look at closing them. I'll definitely checkout the disboards churners page on Reddit when I'm ready to apply, I think I saw a link a few pages back. Thanks again! :goodvibes:goodvibes:goodvibes

@hsmamato2 I can help here. I was able to help a family of 4 get to Hawaii this way when we went last March that were traveling with us. Correct. Flying into London is going to cost a lot in taxes and fees. BA Avios are distance based. If you have a lot of them and don't have a ton of use then go ahead and use it to fly from the east coast to Hawaii. You can position yourself but why waste the other miles if you don't have to. I'd only do that if I didn't have enough or needed to position for a specific flight on a specific aircraft (one with lie flat seats). You will likely not be able to find any flights to Hawaii on BA's site. You need to log into AA's website and look for the flights with the number of people you have traveling. The seats must be available at the saver level.

Here you will see a search I did for a party of 4 flying FLL-HNL one way on October 25. I always search one way since it is easier to piece the award together for me. There aren't any saver awards for that date since the date is gray and says 40K. That means only standard awards are available. But I can see that there are saver awards for 4 on Nov 1-4 and 6-8. It is the same shade of green as the saver award box and says 20k. Keep in mind the BA AVios you will need will be more than 20k since their awards are distance based. So perhaps I decide that I am good to leave the following Friday, Nov 1st instead. I click on that date and get to this screen.

Here I notice that I have 2 choices but none are out of FLL they are out of MIA. That's only 40 minutes away so I would be ok with that. Then I would choose which flight I want. Write down the departing flight number, time and airport, same with the connecting flight. Then go back and do the same thing for the return flight. Once you have your detailed flight info you would call British Airways 800-452-1201 and request the award flights. Sometimes, but not often, they will tell you they can't see the award, politely insist that it is there, ask them to scroll down since that is what happened "last time" and they found it or to call AA to verify. Hope that helps.
Thank you!!! @calypso726 that was helpful! I pasted your notes into a doc to print and follow to the letter....once I make a decision about where we will use them! Have you (or anyone) had issues using the shop portal to keep the points current for use?

Interesting note on my SWA plus card...I called to cancel b/c it's not worth the $69 fee,and then didn't b/c I took the offer of an extra $70 credit to my statement covering the fee....(why not,it's free to keep another year now) that's actually my first retention offer....usually they let me go without a fuss lol

considering the JB 60k offer.... thought maybe use it when I run short on SWA points (I have the CP thru the next year still) what do you think?I'm low on those points, so is it worth an app at the moment? Or should I hold a 'space' for another Barclay general travel card, since I have the SWA thing down pat right now? I'm leaning towards general travel credits right now since a cruise is a possibility- I want those 60k points, just not sure if I need them! edited to add..... I see that I waited too long and it was supposed to go thru 12/31- but when I googled the offer it pulled right up for the 60k....what do you think? old link and it won't work?

Changed chase freedom to Apple Pay default. Used Apple Pay for the first time to buy some supergoop cc cream from jet plus got 10% back from swagbucks. Still thinking I’ll use most of my $1500 at toys r us to buy gift of college cards.

ETA there is a $15 of $45 google express code good through tomorrow for anyone brave (newyear15). I’m tempted to pick up a new Xbox remote.

So glad you mentioned Toys R Us. That didnt dawn on me. Smart!

I think the merch would have to be free before I would use Google Express again. PITA!!

What is so bad about Google Express? I think I remember seeing some complaints before but none of the specifics. I was considering a Costco order...

I
I'm currently working on a Delta Biz Gold min spend (in wife's name). My wife goes under 5/24 on April 1st. If the Delta Gold spend is up before then I'm going to give the BofA Premium Rewards Card a shot (in my name) to bridge the gap.

Once under 5/24 we are going with the CIP first. Then may have wife refer me to Delta Biz Gold just to space out her Chase apps a bit. After that considering a CSR/CSP double dip if it's still alive. That combined min. spend ought to take us into August and my wife would be 2/24 at that point (CIP not counting). Then we're going to try for a second biz card - either CIC or SW Biz probably. Hoping to put another AMEX Biz card in here to stretch things out a little more. Now she's still 2/24 - At that point the plan is a little more fuzzy - cards I'm considering are: SW Plus, SW Premier, Freedom, FU, Marriott. If we play the double dip right we can get 4 of those cards. I can refer my wife to the first 4 so they hit high on the radar but I do love my Marriott points. If we don't spend too much this year perhaps we're able to hit two SW cards late in 4th qtr and earn a Q1 2019 companion pass good through 2020.

Throughout this process my goal is to sloooooow play Chase as much as possible. Put the largest min. spends first so that my pace is slow. Put in a few other cards as well to keep the pace slow. I'm hoping 8 cards over 18 months doesn't get her shut down, but if it happened oh well. I'm not gonna let fear of shutdown keep us from maximizing our return now. If it happens I'll be sad and I'll move on. The real goal next year is to earn enough URs to have a theme park view room in the contemporary for a portion of our Jan '19 Disney trip (probably a split stay between Contemporary and wilderness lodge).

After we finish blasting Chase - wife will move on to the Amex Schwab Plat cash plan! Line up 6-8 cards and earn ourselves a few thousand dollars! And guess what...about that time I'll go back under 5/24 (3/1/19 if I don't get anymore personal cards) and we start the above process over again in my name.

Sorry if this is a lot of boring details lol but it's our plan - hopefully somebody can glean something from it!
I'm trying to glean here..... what I'm seeing is you're being careful with Chase, which worries me a bit since that's my 'main squeeze'..... I should probably branch out too,tho I think I'm far from a hardball player here..... we're mostly Chase at this point with the exception of my SPG,and the Amex BCP....(I max that grocery category out)

They screw up a lot of stuff. But generally try to make it right. They gave me one order for free because it was temporarily missing. Was supposed to be delivered on Thursday and wasn’t so I called Saturday to ask about the status. They credited me for the order and I still got it on Monday.

I haven’t used it in store yet but have used it online (just like chase pay). I’m hoping it’s fairly straight forward.

I ordered a bose soundbar from Costco/google express and it went well. I got both rebate offers. I will say the only annoying thing was lack of info...the order never updated, it just showed up on the porch, so I was stressing til then.

Awesome! I’ve never had issues but I use the shopping portal all the time.

Obviously none of us a truly an expert on what causes these Chase shutdowns but my concern was throwing 5 new cards at them in 6 months. That seems like it could be considered running too hard with them. I'm hoping that with some good strategy I can limit us to 4 (or max 5) Chase cards in a 12 month period while still always working on a min. spend.

After someone mentioned upthread using Apple Pay to send $ to a spouse/family member/friend to get the 5X points without actually spending, I looked into the terms of Apple Pay Cash. It works as both a virtual prepaid card (for using Apple Pay at merchants) or as a funds transfer service to send P2P payments to another user's Apple Pay Cash account. You can fund a P2P payment with a credit card, but there is a 3% fee for doing so. So, you'd only net 2% back if you use the Freedom card to send a P2P payment. Not worth it. There's no fee for funding a P2P payment with a prepaid card, so you could potentially use Apple Pay to buy prepaid cards (if the store allows it) with the Freedom for 5X points then liquidate them through Apple Pay Cash. You'd just be out the fee to purchase the prepaid card. Still, not sure it's worth the hassle. But it's possibly an option if anyone wants to try it. (I don't.)

It's the "Wallet" app on your iPhone. Add your card to that & then you can use it for Apple Pay.

feeling quite dumb here...... how do I add the card to my wallet? I've never used the wallet for anything except storing a boarding pass.... open it,and it shows me my one pass to sams club... how do I add a credit card?

There should be a blue circle with a + sign in the upper right corner when you open the app; touch that and it will open the screen to add a credit card to Apple Pay. (You're not dumb at all, it took me a bit to figure it out too!)

You add credit cards to your "Wallet" on a newer Apple device (e.g., iPhones, MacBooks). This sets them up for use in Apple Pay. In store, you'd double click your home button (or power button on the new iPhone X) to pull up your mobile "wallet" -- your authorization is made with TouchID or FaceID, all your cards should appear, select which one you want to use if not your default card, and then hold your phone near the card reader until your iPhone vibrates and the payment is transmitted.

Thanks! Planning to order some stamps from Costco, so not anything I need urgently.

You should be fine with stamps from Costco. My issues were mostly related to trying to use the AmEx offer of $20 off $50 -- I had this offer on several cards, and actually the Costco order was the only one that worked without an issue. Two other orders -- one from Target and one from Walmart -- had items cancelled, bringing the total below $50. Had to place additional orders; still waiting to see if the Target order posts to Amex with the order date (12/29) or the ship date (which is supposed to be today). Also the orders disappeared from my AmEx account for 5 - 6 days between "pending" and "posted." In sum, nothing horrible - more of a hassle because of trying to use the AmEx offer.
