I love credit cards so much!

Would love some advice. I have been reading and while I didn't read all 600 pages here, I did read about 1/3-1/2. I got very excited about the CSR offer at 100K points and then very sad when I realized the thread started in 2016 and that offer was long over when I started reading in Dec 2017!

I love to save money but haven't been engaged in churning or CC miles/points ever! I do have 2 Chase cards (Disney and Freedom). The last card I opened was in 2011. I would like to get to the point of having miles/points for airfare and hotels. Not sure I have the dedication or time to churn like a pro, though.

Here are some facts: have great credit score 810+; no applications since 2011 so I think I am 0/24; no balances on any cards.
Goals are to build points for travel. After all my reading I think I would try for the Chase Ink Preferred first in March this year (1/24), then CSR/CSP (on same day) in July (2/24 or is this 3/24?). Reasons - have a trip in May to Utah and could use that for easier min spend on CIP; also already have a trip planned for Glacier in Sept and could use for CSR/CSP spend. We are planning a trip in 2019 for Hawaii. I would be looking for the SW Companion Pass in 2019/2020. So after the CSR/CSP, I would look at how I can get the 110K points on SW in early 2019 on the SW cards (4 or 5/24).

Long term goals:
PC the CIP to CIC, close to next anniversary
Keep CSR
PC CSP to Freedom Unlimited
Churn SW cards to get CPs on SW (most of travel is on SW from Columbus OH). If we don't fly SW, we'll probably fly United.
Build hotel points - either with UR or a hotel card.

No thoughts of international travel in next 5 years.

Questions
1. How does this strategy sound? Am I missing anything in terms of my goals?
2. If that sequence looks good (CIP, CSR/CSP, SW cards), what should I focus on next for hotel/airline points? Marriott? United?
3. What to focus on after Chase cards are filled up (5/24)?

Thanks for all the help you guys have done by just putting this all out on the disboards. I haven't traveled to Disney for a few years but a lot of what is out here is good for other travel so I like to read all I can.

Now that I have more than a moment to reply, let me say how impressed I am that you’ve clearly come into this having done your homework. Yes, you missed some great signup offers, but bonuses come and go, rules change and loopholes are found, and new cards are introduced.

First off, you have the Freedom. This quarter offers 5x UR points on up to $1,500 spent on your Freedom at gas stations, on internet, cable and phone services, and whenever you pay using Freedom on mobile wallets like Apple Pay, Android Pay, Chase Pay, or Samsung Pay. These categories should make it very easy to spend $1,500 in 3 months to earn you 7,500 UR points. Be sure to activate the offer on your Freedom if you haven’t already.

You’ve got a really good strategy starting out with the CIP. The CIP offers the highest UR bonus for the foreseeable future: 80k UR after spending $5k/3 months. If you’re interested, and comfortable doing so, you may want to inquire with a Chase Business Relationship Manager to see if you could get a higher signup bonus (100k UR) by applying in-branch. As @wendow noted, as a Chase business card, the CIP will not count against the 5/24 rule so you’ll still be at 0/24 and have five or more slots available for more cards.

As I wrote a few pages back, the CIP is my favorite and highest earning card because it currently earns 3x UR for a lot of our household’s largest monthly expenses that we couldn’t otherwise charge to a credit card by paying with the CIP through Plastiq. Plastiq carries a 2.5% fee, but the 3x UR earnings negate that and actually makes this a small moneymaker. I also like to use the CIP on various gift card apps and platforms because I can earn 3x UR whenever there’s a good promo that can be turned into Disney Gift Cards.

Double-dipping the CSR and CSP as your next cards is also a good idea since this is the only current way to get around the new “one Sapphire rule” for two Sapphire cards and their combined 100k UR bonuses. Each card carries a $4k spend in 3 months requirement, so double dipping will mean you need to spend $8k in the first 3 months of getting the two cards. This will leave you at 2/24. But you may want to wait 30 days after your CIP application because Chase does have a loose 2/30 rule on personal cards, or no more than 2 credit card applications with Chase in the past 30 days to be approved. You’ll want both the CSR and CSP to be approved on the same day for this to work. You should apply on a weekday during regular business hours. Apply for the card you want more first (likely the CSR because it makes UR points worth 50% more vs. CSP’s 25% more), and get that first card approved — call reconsideration if necessary. Once your first card is approved, apply for the second card using incognito mode or a different browser (so Chase’s system doesn’t mistake a second app as a duplicate of the first), and get that second card approved.

Please consider joining our DISchurning subreddit for more information, discussion and tips, and using a referral from the subreddit to spread some goodwill back to this community. Also, as @SouthFayetteFan suggested, if you have a spouse who hasn’t opened many credit cards in the last 2 years, you may want to get him in the game too. You could refer him for the CIP, CSR, and CSP and more than double your UR points haul. In addition to the 80k, 50k, 50k UR signup bonuses for your husband, respectively, a CIP referral would earn you 20k UR, and the CSR and CSP each earn 10k UR per referral. Although you may be tempted to add a spouse as an authorized user to help meet spend or because the card is offering a bonus to add AUs, don’t do it! Just have your spouse sign up for his own card and double up on the bonuses and benefits! If you and your spouse each get the CIP, CSR and CSP, that’s 400k UR from signup bonuses and referrals.

Between slots 3-4 is really up to you. At this point, you may want to mix it up by applying for some of Amex’s Membership Rewards earning business cards or Amex’s SPG business card, which won’t report to your personal credit report and will keep you at 2/24 in Chase’s eyes; and would “slow your roll” with how hard you’re hitting Chase’s cards. I also like the idea of staggering the use of your */24 slots so you don’t put yourself out of the Chase game too fast for 24 months, rather have some slot open or opening up frequently for any interesting card or bonus that may come along.

This year is looking like a big year for hotel cards, and likely new bonuses:

- Amex will become the exclusive issuer of Hilton credit cards, with a new portfolio of cards coming out this month: http://frequentmiler.boardingarea.com/hilton-amex-cards/

- Marriott plans to introduce new cards with Chase and Amex in 2018, with Chase issuing mass consumer and premium consumer level cards and Amex issuing super-premium consumer and business cards. SPG cards are expected to be phased out or converted to the new products. https://www.doctorofcredit.com/marriottspg-signs-new-credit-card-deal-chase-american-express-know/

I think the thought among a lot of churners is to get the Marriott and SPG cards while you can because those cards are disappearing and the new cards will offer new bonuses. With Amex, cards typically come with a once per lifetime per product limitation for bonuses, so it’s kind of an open question what happens when the SPG products are phased out or converted and if cardmembers will be eligible for the new card bonuses.

This Frequent Miler post gives an idea by looking at what’s going on with conversion of the Amex portfolio: http://frequentmiler.boardingarea.com/2017/11/07/hilton-citi-amex-conversion/

For your Hawaii trip, you’ll find a lot of hotels available on the UR travel portal, and remember if you transfer all your points to a CSR and book through that card’s portal, each point is worth 1.5 cents. Alternatively, every major hotel chain, e.g., Hilton, Marriott/SPG, Hyatt, IHG, has properties in Hawaii. I’ll let others chime in on hotel credit cards.

As for United, I can’t recommend their MileagePlus Explorer card right now. The public offer is currently only 40k MileagePlus miles after spending $2k/3 months. For most of last summer, this card had a targeted 70k miles signup bonus. If you really need the MileagePlus miles, Chase Ultimate Rewards points transfer to United MileagePlus. You can also move Amex’s Membership Rewards points to Star Alliance Partners like Air Canada, ANA, and Singapore Airlines and book United through these partners.

With your last open */24 slot, maybe later this year or early next year, you could (1) apply for the Southwest business card (currently offering 60k Rapid Rewards points), for which you have to be under 5/24 to be approved but won’t count against 5/24, and a personal SW card (if at 50k RR or higher) to put you at 5/24; or (2) double dip two personal SW cards at the same time (if their offers are both at 60k RR), brining you to 6/24, and get you to 110k+ RR points for the SW CP.

Good luck!

I have been dying to know Calypso's vacation costs, but thought it was rude to ask. haha Your DVC dues alone are about 2 years worth of vacations for us. It is fun to live vicariously through you.

I'm pretty open about things and not easily offended. We are very fortunate at this stage of our lives and the majority of our spending goes to travel. DH and I grew up very poor and neither of us ever went on a vacation when we were young. I guess we are making up for lost time now. The mortgage is paid off and we will keep cars until they die. We have no children to put through college. DH and I never had student loans either so we really don't have any debts. This year's ABD is the spendiest one we've ever done and Antarctica is a once in a lifetime deal.

It's so fun seeing everyone's points/travel plans for this year. Here's mine:

April: Disneyland for Dapper Days weekend. I have an AP and live in NorCal so I go down several times each year. Flights covered by bonus points from JetBlue card. This will be my first time staying at the Grand Californian and I'm sooo excited! The first night is mostly covered by the CSR travel credit. The 2nd night I'm paying out of pocket but with discounted Disney gift cards. I think I saved about 14% by buying Walmart GCs with the 10% Chase Pay deal a few months ago and then using the WM GCs to buy the Disney GCs at Sam's at 4% off.

Oh! That is a bucket list item for me. I've always wanted to be there for a dapper days weekend. I love seeing the pictures of everyone online that attends. How fun!

Why Ink Plus and not the Ink Cash? I thought the Ink Cash had better rewards with 5x vs 3x, but the Plus offered better protections and other non-reward benefits?

I know you already received the answer. Yes, I have the Plus which gets 5x like the cash. I may downgrade to the cash since I haven't yet maxed out the 5x limit.

This reminds me that I had planned to cancel the AmEx Hilton after our December trip. It's the no-fee (personal) card and I have no use for it now EXCEPT it does get decent AmEx offers. Should I cancel it now in anticipation of a new AmEx card (I have 4 credit cards, so I likely can't get another without canceling one) or should I wait until I decide to apply for a new AmEx card?

I have been wanting the SPG card(s) for over a year. But I've not wanted to go for the personal one while still wanting to go for Chase cards. And the Business SPG offer from several months ago with the 10k spend was just too much spend for me. So, here I am stressing that the SPG cards are going to be gone soon and I've still not gotten them (nor has dh). We also do not have either of the Marriott cards (also want...still kicking myself for not applying when personal offer was 100k).

I'm currently 5/24 with the next card dropping off in June. Dh is 3/24 right now.

And I'm trying to meet the 5k spend on the Amex BRG that I am not entirely sure why I applied for.

Would you guys advise me to go for the SPG cards even though I'll be pushed further out with Chase? Is the end of the SPG cards that imminent? I read the programs aren't merging until 2019 so I am safe waiting until later in 2018?

Now that the Biz SPG is back to 25k for $5k why not go with that? Doesn't affect 5/24 status but still gets you 30k SPG points (or 90k Marriott) with no annual fee the first year.

Also when you go back to 4/24 in June are you planning to do a Chase Double Dip and if so which 2 cards?

Me too! I haven't been able to make it down for one yet, so this will by my first one. I've seen pictures and it looks really fun. Can't wait!

CHASE ULTIMATE REWARDS - CRUISE/TOUR DEPT UPDATE
I just called the Chase travel/cruise department to discuss the whole booking a package with URs. I called 1-855-234-2542 and asked for the travel and cruise department. First Off - I spoke to Leon at x. 8179 and I'd HIGHLY recommend him as he was patient, friendly, funny and answered all my questions. He specifically gave me his extension and asked for me to call him when I was ready to book so I assume he gets some sort of credit for this and in my book he deserves my business for how awesome he was! I'd guess you could ask to be connected with him if anybody here is booking.

So based on my conversation with Leon I have good news for everybody:
  • You CAN pay for a Disney Package (hotel, tickets, dining, etc.) with any combination of (1) Ultimate Rewards Points; (2) Disney Gift Cards; and (3) Any Chase Ultimate Rewards Credit Card.
  • You only get one opportunity to use URs and Disney Gift Cards and that is at the time of booking. Once you are booked, you cannot earn additional URs and apply them later OR apply additional Disney gift cards later
  • Any Remaining balance can be paid off that day OR paid off based on normal Disney policies (i.e. 30 days) but ONLY using a Chase Ultimate Rewards Credit Card. I specifically asked about what if it is another Chase card like Southwest or Marriott and he said no, it has to be a UR earning card.
  • I didn't specifically ask about using multiple Disney Gift Cards but my guess would be you'd want to consolidate them into increments of $1,000 (and potentially call like I did to make sure this policy hasn't changed before buying a bunch of Disney GCs).
I will add this post to our DISchurners Reddit post. This is AWESOME news that you can actually purchase a Disney Package this way. Of course this could change at any time so I'd make sure you verify this before you get too deep into GCs to payoff your trip. Good Luck everybody!

Thanks for this! Did you happen to ask if you could do a Disney Package without tickets? I.e. just room and dining plan? I know that is available if you call Disney, just wondering if you were told it is a possibility with Chase.

I will play the upcoming vacation game (although honestly it is making me a little sad and jealous as I want to plan and do more!)

In 2 weeks the five of us are leaving for WDW. Flying with companion certificate from Delta Platinum Amex and the rest miles. Staying in two rooms at CBR booked with UR. (While one room could in theory fit us it was worth the points to not be cramped). We have AP's so no ticket cost at least.

End of February husband and I fly direct to Maui. Booked on a Delta flash sale they had a couple months ago. Used miles gained from getting the SPG last Spring. Staying 6 nights at Hyatt Regency Maui. 2 free nights from card sign up and the rest through transferred UR miles.

I want to go to WDW again end of May but watching airfare right now. If this works out with staying on property (we usually do off) will try to use UR points again.

Nothing else for now...but I am not going to lie when I see the notifications pop up for flash sales etc I always think how I could figure out a way for us to go. Stupid real life and obligations just keeps getting in the way!

Only one trip—August we’re doing a 7 day Disney cruise in Alaska. Three plane tickets from Richmond, VA to Vancouver were 72,000 ur points (mainly csp sign on). Two rooms at delta suites for two nights (covering my mom’s room) was 140,000 Marriott points (Amex spg and chase Marriott sign on bonus). The cruise fare was $9,000 for one verandah stateroom and one inside stateroom. That’s with an onboard booking. Getting $700 back from Costco and paying for it in Disney gift cards. Used csr to pay $100 to get insurance.
My 2019 goal !

my son in idaho called and wants the family to go to disneyland next christmas season. working around school and work schedules, it looks like early jan 2019 works best. now i have to figure out how to get 7 people to california. was hoping you all might have some suggestions for me. i've been playing the cc bonus game for a couple of years but spending it as i get it. trip to florida, trip to hawaii, multiple trips to idaho. was hoping you all could see an easy (cheap) way for me to get 7 of us from pdx to disneyland, LAX, SNA, ONT, LGB are all ok. here is what i have in cards currently.

me- ax blue 3-16, alaska 4-16 (j), freedom 5-16, ihg 5-16, ax blue + 7-16, ba 10-16 (a), fu 10-16 (a), b arrival + 11-16 (a), b arrival + 04-17, citi ty 7-17, alaska 8-17, boa rew 9-17.

spouse- ax blue 3-16 (a), alaska 4-16 (j), freedom 5-16 (a), csr, ba 10_16, fu 10-16, b arrival + 11-16, alaska 12-16, b arrival + 4-17 (a), citi ty 7-17, disc it 12-17

not pretty huh.

Thanks for this! Did you happen to ask if you could do a Disney Package without tickets? I.e. just room and dining plan? I know that is available if you call Disney, just wondering if you were told it is a possibility with Chase.
I didn't ask that one, sorry!

OK - here goes - 2018 travel:
Spring = Costa Rica trip on our own for 4 people/10 nights. Flights using SW miles and a companion pass (from credit card sign on bonuses). Two of the three hotels I booked on the UR portal. The third I'm paying for out of pocket cause I just REALLY wanna stay there and can't do it discounted. Rental car is out of pocket. I'm looking at booking a few activities via the Chase portal, but I'm a little frustrated. I want to know who the tour provider is, and I can't figure that out on the Chase site. I guess I need to call Chase and see if they can tell me. Anyone done this?
Would you mind sharing what hotels? This is on my list of possible summer vacation spots along with Belize.

  • Cashback or Travel "eraser" cards like Barclay Arrival or Capital One travel card to use towards cost or excursions
IF you can get approved for those cards. I got Arrival+ before the stricter application rules went into effect. I was amongst many who applied for Cap1 and got 3 hard hits (all credit bureaus) and a denial.

  • You can book first with Disney or an Agent and have it later taken over by the Chase Travel team, and THEN use your UR points...BUT its more complicated and takes more time and there are sometimes issues when doing this. She clearly didn't want me to do this.

Interesting. I have two trips booked right now, One with Chase for a room only using all points, then a second for the same trip with Disney using a 20% bounce back with room and dining only. I have been trying to decide what one to cancel but from this it sounds like I could possibly move that to chase and pay off the balance with points (Only paid the $200 deposit so far)... I may have to call tomorrow and see if that would work! Did she happen to say with the issues might be?
