Just back yesterday from WDW. Went over for a few days to enjoy the Christmas decorations, see Whoopi at the CP, do the Dessert Party/Plaza for HEA, see Cirque again before it closes, and just relax. Stayed at the Hilton Garden Inn on points- with our free breakfast ($10.95 per person if paid for) for elite status. Breakfast options were good, and included made to order omelettes. We have APs and a TiW card- both paid for through Disney Gift Cards using the AmEx Sam's Club offer that popped on several of our cards around a year ago- essentially getting us the GCs at 24% off- plus a boatload of MRs for the purchases, of course. We also used these GCs for all of our meals, so when combined with the TiW discount wound up getting almost 45% off our meals- WooHoo. Of course, you have to factor in the cost of the TiW card- but we go over a lot so the cost gets 'diluted' across many meals and drinks, as do the cost of the APs. Special event tickets also wind up costing us less given the discount we obtained on the Sam's offer. Trip was good- crowds low, good weather- and was a very relaxed mini vacation. Didn't have to burn a lot of points for this one, so although the GCs are cash out of pocket still getting an outstanding return on investment. So...that's my 'travel hacking' related trip report :)

I just signed up for the AmEx platinum and got the 100k offer. I am active duty military so the annual fee is waived, so it seemed like a great card to get. I mostly use a chase united card that I have had for years to earn United miles. I see that the MR points do not transfer to United, but does to some of the star alliance partners. Is there a way to use the MR points combined with United miles on a star alliance partner?

One way would be to book a one way on United at @Albort said and book the other way on an MR partner, like Delta. Additionally, you could find a flight that shows award availability on UA one way with the MR star alliance partner and book the other way on United. That’s the only way I can see to combine them and fly on United, other than using the MR points to pay for the travel in lieu of transferring to an airline.

I look at MR points as another way to diversify the miles and points portfolio. Some transfer partners are unique to MR, some they have in common with UR and TYP. Worst case scenario, they can be used as cash at 1 cent per point or 1.54 cents per point if you also have the business Platinum card. 100,000 MR is as good as $1,000 and more than enough reason to pick up the card, more so if your AF is waived. Thank you for your service. We do use the card benefits often enough to keep the card. 5x on airfare is nothing to sneeze at either.

Discover is the card I have had the longest. There have been times where I haven’t used it for a year. I don’t care about price protection at all; at this point it’s sole function is for gift cards. This quarter I have used it at Amazon and Target too though. In the past I have used it when it had the home improvement category for gift cards. It is a decent cash back no fee card to just keep.

I can’t see anywhere on the site where to track where you are at the $1500 limit. I have just been adding it up myself since I didn’t use it at all since this last quarter started. Chase Freedom is definitely easier that way!

So glad I hopped on here before heading to Target today! Dh has Discover so I’ll buy the gift cards with that and then use the gift cards this week to make my Christmas gift purchases with my 20% Black Friday coupon.

The 20% off coupon can't be used on gift cards so you'll only save the 10% off the Target cards and then whatever you get from Discover. There's been lots of talk about it in the gift cards thread.

DoC reports a lot of people had their gift card balance zeroed out... :\ sounds pretty scary...

fyi, my marriott points posted quickly this time around. Hope ya'll dont run into any trouble!

I'm not sure you understood what they were saying. They are buying gift cards today for the 10%. Then they will use the 20% on merchandise later this week and pay with the gift cards...so in this way it combines perfectly.

I believe that last year some people bought target gift cards online using target gift cards during this deal. Some people then had problems with those egift cards. You can no longer buy a Target gift card online with a target gift card. So I wouldn’t worry about this.

I wish i knew sure if these cards could be flipped. I was actually told no by 3 different
managers today you cannot buy ANY gift card with the target gift card. I'm thinking
i may try to do it through self checkout. Disappointed they stopped carrying amazon as
i wanted amazon card and couple of Disney and Ebay.

It is ymmv, but there’s an abundance of evidence that you can.

I would go in store to purchase.

I sure hope so. There will be a lot of disappointed people if starting tomorrow they close that loophole.

*On a side note I haven't been in a Target for least a year because I do 90 percent shopping at Amazon.
For it being Christmas shopping season the 3 targets I went to today were kinda dead. I was really
surprised.

I had 2 $5 Target eGCs from promos that I scanned at self checkout towards a $300 Target GC. Total came down to $259.95 (-$30 with 10% savings and $0.05 discount for clicking that I brought my own bag).

Agreed. I would be disappointed but could easily use the gift cards to buy groceries. In a few months they’d be spent and I’d still have made off like a bandit.

Thanks! This makes me feel better.
