I love credit cards so much!

CSP->Freedom (AU): 6/16/17 (strategic move in my overall credit plan)
CSR: 6/11/18

Mortgage 6/11/18 (because I believe mortgage was one of those shut down factors? Only listing because this is so new.)

All other cards 19+ years old (with balances that only decrease every month). Remember I am the exception to the norm ;) Churning with debt and a payoff plan.

Definitely going for SW CP in Dec/Jan, not sure which cards yet. I'm currently thinking of dd'ing Plus and Premier, but also considering the biz with a personal. Would it be possible to do a CIP now? His would be a "business" although I do have a business and could just pull him under mine right? I just wonder if I'm hitting too many too soon. I prefer to space mine out usually, but Hawaii is on the radar for next year possibly so accumulating UR is my plan.

I'm either at 4/24 or 5/24 depending on what's added to and what's dropped from my report at the moment, I think I'm going for the CIC soon.

Mortgage is actually a positive shut down factor. I theorize that it makes you SAFER from shutdown (not everybody agrees with that opinion tho - some thing it means nothing...but NOBODY would say it makes you MORE at risk :))

He'd be fine to go for a CIP now. If you want to REALLY be safe, wait until 9/12 and apply then. That way you've put 3 full months between apps.

Also, I tried merging my SPG and Marriott accounts yesterday afternoon and got an error message at the last step, but I was able to successfully merge about half an hour ago. I have no idea where my total nights came from, but the total points seem more or less correct. What I don't see yet is my free night cert that I had on Marriott in the combined account, nor my 7-night category 1-4 cert from the N&F package I purchased a few months ago.

Thanks - was just able to merge my accounts successfully. I did it on the Marriott side, so my packages are still in there. I didn't have much in my SPG in my account, but my points and nights seem to have come over ok. I'm new platinum - looking for my "suite nights", which will be a new benefit to me, but don't see them yet.

Right! My only concern is that it's a new mortgage so I'm not sure if that would be treated differently. I didn't quite word that right when I retyped it lol

And, I forgot one, he's actually 2/24. He's AU on my CSP->Freedom 6/17
I'm going to edit and add that.

I know the recommended strategy is to get the CP early in the year so you have it for 2 years.......will you use it a lot in,those two years or are you better off having it for your December cruise flights and next year

For me the SW Priority is worth it...due to the $75 credit and 4 upgrades..so I’d do option 2

I just upgraded my Plus that had been open 2 years this month...bonus points posted & annual fee hit...got a $35 retention credit first on the Plus ...then called to upgrade
So online I see the $35 credit and refund of my $69 plus annual fee...I’m assuming the $149 will hit soon and I will use the $75 credit easily...and hopefully the upgraded boarding positions will be easy to use as well.

Thank you. Can I ask why you wouldn’t choose option 1?

I like option 3, nice and easy. But the others are way too much spend for me personally. I am trying to figure this out for myself. I'm hoping the offer for the plus goes up to 50k so I can just do that and the Biz...otherwise not sure what I'm going to do.

“Nice and easy” is a good point!

I am coming to the experts for advice! What would be the best credit cards to get for airline miles? - We usually fly SW. My DH and I currently each have the Chase SW RR cards. We got them almost 2 years ago with the 50K bonus miles. The miles are almost used up, we use this card very infrequently. We also have the Chase Freedom card, this is what we use for all of our regular expenses. We have had this card for many years. I see mention of the Chase Saphire card with a 50K bonus miles offer. Would this be the card to apply for and can I could I use the reward miles for SW? Thanks.

I would like my nights and flights Animal Style. If animal style means not losing 75k+ points towards my planned trip that is.

Where does one find the higher SW offer? Planning a cp January and I'd be willing to do a random flight somewhere for the higher sign-up.

You are my spirit animal. Somehow your travel plans are always right in line with what I'm trying to do. I have been needing to compare different combos of SW cards to figure out which would work best so thank you! Still not sure which one I will do. That's a steep jump in MSR. I swear Marriott and SW are trying to make this difficult for me:rolleyes1
Yes, huge jump in msr. I could probably hit the extra $15k for the new card extra bonus by the end of the year but not terribly soon, since tuition was just paid and not due again til Jan.

Would you benefit from a sw cp?
If so, I’d make a plan to get one of those late 2018 so it posts 2019. It sounds like you’ll be eligible to churn you sw cards then.

Do you have any sort of business? Pet sitting? Sell stuff on FB or eBay? Teach piano?
The chase business cards are awesome. CIP is an 80k sign up bonus and the points transfer to sw.
The sapphires are great too and you could app for both in 1 day (only way to get both) for a total of 100k UR that can transfer to Sw.

Welcome! I could probably type a book as a response...but I'll try not to.
  • If you got your current RR cards "almost 2 years ago" then you can "almost" close them and apply again for a new bonus. You need to wait 24 months from the date you earned the bonus points. If you aren't sure what that date is I'd wait 28 months from when you signed up for the card to be safe.
  • Currently the SW cards only have a 40k bonus. Obviously the 50k bonus is better. The higher bonus may come back eventually, but nobody really knows when at this point.
  • You can refer each other to these cards potentially, which would get you an additional 10k points...that's nice, right?
  • If you weren't aware, Southwest has a Companion Pass. To earn this ONE PERSON just has to earn 110,000 SW RR points in one calendar year. The bonus from a Credit Card signup would count. Keep in mind that you can't each sign up for a card...one person would need to earn all 110k points.
  • An interesting thought here...do you have a business, or any sort of side hustle that could qualify as a business? (rental property, Sell things on Ebay, sell cookies, teach piano, consulting, etc.)... :) If you do, then that could alter some recommendations. For one, SW has a business CC which offers 60k points...there are also other biz cards out there.
  • Chase Sapphire cards (CSR = Chase Sapphire Reserve and CSP = Chase Sapphire Preferred) are both EXCELLENT cards. The points earned from them can be transferred to Southwest although that may not be the best use. Those points can be used on all sorts of things: Hotels, Disney packages, flights, rental cars etc. If you're interested in those cards and all they have to offer we can giev a lot more detail on that too.
Some information that would be helpful:
- How many people typically in your travel party and what ages?
- Where do you like to go? (I'd assume Disney World but that's not always the case here on the DIS)
- Are you comfortable going after a business card?

I wouldn't do anything too quickly, get some good advice here and we'll help you develop a great plan. Also - if you're going to start signing up for cards and are interested, we have a PRIVATE REDDIT group called DISchurners where you can support other DISers. To join just send me a PM and I can get you all setup.

Thanks for the quick reply, but what is the sw cp?
The SW CP is the Southwest Companion Pass. Once you earn one, you designate a companion who flies FREE with you anytime you fly...anywhere...no limit!! It's good for the rest of the year you earned it...and ALL of the next year. You earn one by having one person earn 110,000 SW RR points in ONE calendar year. The best time to earn it is typically early in the year (i.e. early 2019) since it can be good for almost 2 full years then. Signup points from SW credit cards count towards the 110k. (and in case you were wondering, points from the Chase sapphire cards do not).

Well my final charges to meet the double dip MSR are pending. The CSR will be about $5,700 and the CSP will be about $5,400.

Only $3,100 over... you know another entire MSR :sad2:, but it is ok! Since I was approved two weeks ago, will I see the bonus points once the statements close? I assume it will close in about 2.5 weeks.

We do go to WDW every summer, so I am trying to line up points for travel next July/August. Typically 4 of us travel - 2 adults and 2 teens ( 15 and 18) We don't currently do anything that would be considered a business. We got the SW RR visas in October of 2016, earned the points by January 2017. What else do I need to know about the CSR and CSP?

Thanks so much!

That's crazy!! I am about to hit the CSP but planning to stretch the CSR out for another 2 months. You FLEW through those MSRs.

You should see the points go pending pretty soon after the purchases post. Once you see them pending you'll get them on your next statement close. I bet you'll get them on that statement (but can't say for sure).

What's your Gameplan now? What other cards do you have open that you can put spend on? Do you have any Chase Freedom cards (or cards you could PC to a Chase Freedom)?

Congrats on a very successful Double Dip!

Well the points you'd earn from a CSR & CSP can be used to book on-site Disney packages! IF both you AND your husband signed up for those cards...you could earn around $3,700 towards hotels/tickets!! The question would be...can you comfortably hit an $8,000 Minimum Spend Requirement (MSR) within 3 months?

If so I'd highly recommend a CSR/CSP double dip - which is getting both of those cards for one person at the same time. THEN the first person could refer the 2nd person to both cards and earn the bonuses again PLUS 20k extra points for referring.

I'd also REALLY consider your position on the business card...the CIP card (Chase Ink Preferred) is an AWESOME card that earns over $1,200 towards Disney for spending just $5,000. BUT if you aren't comfortable applying for a biz card NOBODY here will push it on you, don't worry. It's your call!

Yes. Pass through coding is back. Use CSR for dining and travel merchants’ gift cards for 3x UR + whatever UA miles the app earns, CIP for 5x UR + UA miles for OD/OM/Staples gift cards (can’t be used for GC>GC), and whatever card you’re working on MSR for all other 1x merchant categories.

I think you meant CIC for 5x UR for OD/OM/Staples gift cards. I've seen enough people get confused on that bit that I want to be nit-picky on that detail. Tagging @CoP Luv so you don't miss this.
