College student, age 21, is going to Europe for two weeks this summer, should get a credit card with no foreign transaction fees. Has a tiny bit of income from a summer job. Not my kid. Parents only have 1 credit card, so they're not knowledgeable about any of this. Any advice about what the easiest options would be?
I think that student should take a look at the Capital One Secured Quicksilver card. It is for people with poor or no credit, has a $0AF and no foreign transaction fees. However, the student would have to put down a $200 refundable deposit to secure the initial $200 credit line.

I hesitate to mention this if the parents only have 1 credit card...but if it's a Chase card then they could add the kid as an AU to help build the kid's credit score since then it will be backdated to when the parents opened the card (assuming that the parents have great credit!!! otherwise it will hurt the kid). If the kid has no clue what the parent's credit score is, then just skip this.

College student with basically no income shouldn't be looking at cards with an af, nevermind one with a $300 at.

It's going to depend on her credit score and income, esp if she only has a summer job. Does she get money from her parents or anyone each month?

Where does she bank? That may be the best place to start since she'd have the relationship.

Most of the time for a 1st card discover would be suggested since they have student cards along with regular and both have options with no ftf. But discover isn't taken all over europe so it would probaly not be the best idea. Unless she's open to getting a card from them now to help with her credit score and then in April or May she may have better luck getting a card from a bank that does visa or MC.
True enough, skipped the no income part 😂. I grabbed a decent travel card when I was in college but I had income and no loans, but missed the “little
income” part.

Fun fact for this card tho, it’s a great one to add kids as authorized users as they get all the benefits. All four kids are AU so they can get lounge access, etc. and build credit.

Interesting, we swear by it. But I would say it really depends on your flight habits. As we fly mostly to Asia and Orlando, we get a lot of use out of it. The Capital One lounge in Dallas is amazing, we also use the PP benefit in Tokyo, HNL, and SFO when we pass through. You can also use Plaza Premium lounges, but they aren't in those airports either. Unfortunately I have found if you are flying United (term C in EWR or much of ORD) its near impossible to get anything but a United Lounge, which often really sucks for mostly anyone. They monopolize all the space, so the only card that would work is the United Club Card.

I would say that the lounge access alone this year has saved me about $300 in airport food or more, but once again I am the exception for a lot of people as I was on about 8 different intercontinental legs this year with a family of 6.

He lives in Linden. I was just trying to fly into EWR so my parents could pick me up at the airport.
I grew up in Linden! (And am in EWR now flying home to MCO, but I digress) EWR really is significantly easier than JFK or LGA to go to Linden.

That said, if you can get from LGA to Penn Station in NYC, you can take a NJ Transit train to EWR and your family could pick you up there. But I'm not sure about the getting from LGA to NYC Penn part.

I made a comment on DISchurners about a possible variant MS route, it's under News. I'm willing to be the guinea pig but if someone has already done it I'd love to hear how it went.

I would check the r/churning ms thread (I think it's the Saturday thread) or last week's discussion or question threads. It was discussed in the reg ones, just don't remember which or what day. I think someone had tried it. I don't think many have a debit card which makes it hard for others to try. Worry it'll get figured out before new acct or cards, forget which, can be done sometime in Jan.

Speaking of Priority Pass through Venture X, has anyone else seen the news that Priority Pass restaurant credits will no longer be available with this card come Jan 2023? I'm seeing mixed messages on whether CSR PP will have similar restrictions, so interested to see how that plays out.

It's listed on a number of sites, here's one (not sure if there's issues with links, I'll happily edit if needed): https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.bu...iority-pass-lose-restaurants-spas-2022-12?amp

Yea from what I have read it is a change with Visa Infinite so my guess is we will here it drop on other cards soon. I was counting on using an LAX minute suite in June so a tad disappointed, but not overly so.

We have been flying out of BWI on Southwest, so was excited to hear about a new PP restaurant in that terminal. Looks like we won't be able to use that benefit though ☹️

We had a Hilton FNC that would otherwise expire before the holidays, so I booked one night at the Conrad in Washington DC. I have never stayed in DC and only have visited the National Mall tourist sites in the summer. We have one afternoon/evening to spend but we want to get into the holiday spirit. I did a quick search and DC has a variety of holiday light displays & events - the downtown holiday market, the national Christmas tree display, the US capitol Christmas tree, Zoo-Lights, the US Botanic gardens display, and the City Center tree/shopping area which is near the hotel. Does anyone have advice on these possibilities or others that I missed? Also, would you recommend we take the Metro to get around? I am honestly a little stressed over this and I'm not sure I even want to go lol. I am not a spontaneous traveler especially during this busy month but I hate to waste the FNC.

edited to add Hilton told me their policy is to extend any FNC fo 2 weeks only and you have to call them on the day after your FNC expires.
I have lived outside Washington, DC my whole life and ridden on Metro since it opened. I would not hesitate to use it to get around if there are stops near what you want to see. I do not use Uber or Lyft but since you only have a short time in DC that might be the best choice for some of the places you mentioned. The only holiday thing on your list I have done is the National Christmas tree display many years ago which was nice. I hope you enjoy your visit.

I couldn't find this but I would love to know! My preferred method when I hit the jackpot on the 24-30% back on VV on Giftcards.com was to pop them down on my gas and electric bill, saved hundreds on my utilities and have a balance that will last the year! But this is a long term game, if we have some more short term options I am all in!

What?!? 24-30%… is that method over?

Oh this is sad news! I fly out of BWI at least 2 or 3 times a year on SWA back home to HOU, and IAH twice this year to go to Germany and to England. I have used the restaurant credit at least 4 times with a guest since having the card, twice at IAH, once at BWI, and at IAD. So I am definitely going to miss that benefit. I got approved for the card in December. The membership fee posting date is December 21 so it will be on my next statement. I still like to have access to the lounges and this is the only card I have that has lounge access. I can get a CSR card in July 2023 so I think I’ll hold onto the Venture x for now. I have another trip planned to Germany in April (grandson #2 is due) so the lounge access will be nice.

Did something change and I missed it? I've been stalking car rentals for January through the chase portal, and it looks like the UR travel page got an update HOWEVER, for both DH's CIP and my SP the travel "bonus" is gone??? It's only giving me 1:1 points and not 1.25 that's a 10,000 point difference on my current car rental.
