I saw the later post that you accepted a retention offer, but it's funny as I was just having this conversation with my husband about all our premium cards being on the chopping block. Amex is not making me happy. I don't love any of their perks right now. I use the airline credits, but it's a PITA and Chase's travel credit is so much easier to use. I feel like Amex loves to offer "deals" but makes them difficult to use with tons of hoops. Between DH and I we have: 2 personal platinums, a gold, a business platinum, and 2 Aspires.Amex personal plat is up for renewal on 2/16, held for 3 years. Seriously considering canceling, as I truly only value the airline credit and Saks (can you believe it?), so I value it at $250, tops. Everything else is spending just to make my AF back. I'm trying to figure out what I would accept for a retention vs close/PC.
How much will the annual fee be?
If push comes to shove, what no fee MR card can I PC it to?
As I review my Amex portfolio, every other MR earning card is on the chopping block come renewal, so might be worth it to keep it open, if it doesn't cost me.
Of all those, I'm tempted just to keep the Aspires and maybe the gold for the 4x on groceries and restaurants. I use the Dell and Saks credits on the platinums, but mostly just to make me feel better about covering the huge fees and it's always a hassle to find something I "need." I'm really leaning toward trying to find cards that give me the best points on certain categories. The 6 months of 10x points at grocery stores on the platinums was awesome. Miss that.
