1) If we can list one for each spouse, I'd say DH keep his CSR and I would keep my CIC. I guess if only one, I'd have to say the CSR I think.

2) This is technically two trips, but for the same purpose. Both of our DDs studied abroad in the same year and churning allowed us to visit both of them - one in April in Europe for 12 days and one in August in Australia, but for only one week (due to work issues). We would not have been able to do both without points. Churning paid for both of our round trip flights to both places, and all hotel rooms except 2 nights in Germany that we booked through hotels.com. It also paid for DD2s round trip to Australia and DD1s return trip from Europe. So, it definitely changed our lives for the better that year!

Now if i can only talk DS into studying abroad when his time comes lol!

Making progress on SW Biz MSR. Just ordered my coworker tea drops for his birthday. With estimated tax payments pushed out, I may just settle for 70,000 RR points for $5,000 instead of trying to get the 100,000 RR points. It would be nice if Chase pushed out the three months (like Amex) and six months to make the spending, but I'm not counting on it.

Wasn't the MSR on the SW cards already 6 months? Three months for the first $1000 and 6 months for the remaining?

How about we redirect to something completely on topic!

2 Questions:

1) If you were told you had to close ALL of your CCs and could only hold ONE card...which card would you hold, and why?

2) Tell me about your favorite trip that churning has enabled. Where did you go? How did churning make it possible? etc...

Let's flood the thread with fun on topic comments that can encourage everybody during these tough times!!
for both me and @calypso726, we would both agree our CI+ is the one and only CC we would keep for the lifetime. haha.

i think churning enables me to fly J class a lot more often than i would. Lounges def spoil me and my family.
also being able to stay at Hyatt all over the country has been a big benefit in this churning world.

ONE card? Only ONE card! o_O What do you mean ONE card! :scared1: What type of dystopian, credit card, travel hacker, planning nightmare do you want us to envision? :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

All right, @Albort is absolutely right and if I had to go all Hunger Games in my wallet, I'd choose District 13, which is the Ink Plus card. Can I just say that I love the fact @Albort knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that I'd pick the old Ink Plus card which PlanePrincess and I both still have and love dearly :flower3:

So on to the why. The old Ink Plus earns 5x on phone, internet, cable and Office supply stores. Thanks to third party GCs at office supply stores and fee free offers from time to time on the cash equivalent GCs, I can get nearly 5x on almost all purchases up to $50,000 in spend per year. The UR points are variable so I can transfer direct to airlines and hotels. While I'd have to sacrifice the value of the CSR at 1.5 to the Ink+ at 1.25, the greater UR earning potential and lower fee with the Ink+ actually outweigh the CSR in a one card only scenario.

Now, favorite trip. WOW, that's tough. Churning has enabled aspects for all of our trips. I will say my favorite air travel PlanePrincess type experience is hands down, Singapore Suites for comfort and service. This was on the way to the China Adventures By Disney trip in 2018. We used SPG points to transfer to Singapore Airlines. We had to position at JFK to catch the flight from there and used AA gift cards for the flight over to NY if memory serves. The plane experience was so amazing it literally deserves a mention as far as things churning has allowed me to experience.

If I go with favorite overall trip where every aspect of it besides food and souvenirs was accomplished with credit card points from churning and travel hacking, then that is a different matter. I think I'd have to choose last year's Dubai/Maldives trip. The airfare and accommodations alone would have cost over $50,000. We managed it with $235, a combinations of SPG points converted to Marriott points, used those to get Marriott air and hotel travel packages with Alaska Air. Cancelled the hotel part on all but one of the travel packages to get more Marriott points. Used Alaska Air miles to get first class flights on Emirates to fly to Dubai with a free stop over. This was the plane with the shower. We had to position to IAH and used United miles to get there. Used Marriott points to book the Al Maha Desert Resort & Spa for a few nights which is an all inclusive. Therefore, we did not need to budget for food and they also include two activities daily. Then, a few days later we flew to the Maldives for no additional miles. We stayed at the Conrad Rangali in over-water bungalows using Hilton points. We used the Hilton Aspire resort credits to pay for the sea plane. The Aspire gave us Diamond status so we had free breakfast and afternoon tea at the resort and only had to worry about dinner. I'll post some pics for the newer folks on the thread. A picture is worth 1,000 words as they say. So here are a few 1000 just to convey nearly anything is possible with travel hacking. There is no way we would have been able to do this trip without this hobby.

I thought I was pretty good with PenFed Cash Rewards with 2% on everything and no AF (or possibly PenFed Platinum Rewards with 5% fuel, 3% grocery, 1% else). But now I'm liking mgarbowski's BoA Premium Rewards (I prolly don't qualify for that though)
To get those reward levels, you need to maintain $100k in assets at BoA/Merrill. That's a chunk, but can come from bank accounts, retirement, or regular investments. Absent the bonus multiplier, the card is 2% for travel and dining and 1.5% all else. There are intermediate bonus multipliers for I think $20k and $50k in assets.

Can I ask why?

Yes, of course!
It's a 2 % card as well as 3% on travel and a $49 fee. I do not have a CSR or CSP or CIP or CIC - the cards that increase value of UR's. I buy most grocery items at Costco. So my Rose Gold is good for groceries or gift cards but not as high volume as my Visa is for groceries.
I don't fly so other than gift cards, my MR earning cards are not as valuable for me.

A visa would be the best card for most - acceptability most places. After that, my NFCU card has cell phone insurance, most of the other perks plus the ability to generate 4 global entry credits including AU cards. (For my other kids.)

There is also a loyalty factor - if I'm going to trust a bank, NFCU has been with me since the early 80ties, has had a few mortgages for me, has been there for me when I needed them. If they weren't a stellar operation today, of course I would be gone instantly, but they are.

Appreciate everybody jumping in on this new topic - amazing to see everybody's responses!!

Also - love how those in 2 player mode are "cheating" the answer with 2 cards... isn't that what churning is all about? Bending those rules??? :D :D :D

Also - just one additional reminder that we are going to completely avoid "the topic which shall not be named" on this thread going forward. Let this place be a respite from other places on the internet!!! I understand that might be difficult as current situations are affecting our trips and our planning but it's for the greater good. The budget board is given latitude BUT the DIS as a whole has certain policies and procedures and let's endeavor to make the moderators jobs EASY by not being one of the problems. If anybody among us elects to bring it back up, I'd suggest we just ignore. And there are numerous places out there on the internet if you really want to have discussions about that.

Thanks guys - today shows what our group is capable of, let's keep it up!!

How long does it usually take for the bonus To show up for someone using your support link? Next month? A week?

Also looks like I’ll need to figure out how to add my cip to my existing online account. Ugh.

What about FNC's - I can't remember if they did something already with those.

They had already announced that.

  • Members with active Free Night Awards (as part of a credit card benefit, Annual Choice Benefit, Promotion or Travel Package) with an expiration starting March 1, 2020 will be extended through January 31, 2021.

Members do not need to take any action. Members will see updates in their Account on marriott.com by the end of April 2020.

You can usually see it pending within about 2 weeks, give or take. I know they use to post on Tuesdays (guess they still do?).

You are correct and now I remember it and why it didn't make much impression. It's almost useless (to me). I have a free 50k night that would expire in Nov 2020. Under the old way - call and ask for an extention, I had a shot at getting a year.

I am also working on this one. Got the 70 for 5k, now working on 25k in 6 months for the bonus to finish off my CP. I had lots of spring business trips, but now they've cancelled. Going to try pre-paying some 6 month insurance, etc. to still make it happen, but it will be much tougher now! An extension would be nice!

Is anyone still planning fall/winter trips?
Still have our Washington DC trip booked for October.

I just booked Yavapai Lodge (Grand Canyon) for Christmas week, I was only able to get until the 24th on the Chase Travel Portal, but I have Bright Angel Lodge booked until the 25th. Still holding out for some Phantom Ranch cancellations that week.
I have July booked for WDW and everything in me is hoping it doesn't cancel. It's my Riviera stay and I added on 2 nights at BW to use points that I had borrowed. I do think July will be "okay" with extra precautions.

I have September mostly booked that I'm on the fence about, I think it could happen. I have Nov/Dec booked that I think may not happen.

What dates are you doing in September?

Tough. I'd have to keep my CSR I think. The flexibility of UR and the travel portal are my favorite. I would very much miss some of the Amex offers though.

Hawaii for the 6 of us. Flights on SW on points, Hilton on UR points, car rental on points, used UR to purchase Go Oahu cards to cover activities. The only out of pocket was food and souvenirs. My youngest just asked today about going back.

I seem to recall that you must call to have your first business account created, and at that time you can add personal cards to that account. But you can't add business cards to personal account. After that all cards will automatically be included in that account.

Could someone verify if this sound correct ... it's been a while.

Oh, Riveria and Boardwalk ... I hope it works out for you ... sounds GREAT!

which hiltons did you end up staying at? I am trying to do our family of 6 this year. I have lots of points but can't decide on a 2nd hotel.

Quick question... we just got our first CIP (and first biz card for that matter). Do we need to setup separate Chase.com account? I assume it can't be added to the personal Chase login? Thx!

You do have to create a new account. But then you can ask Chase to merge your personal accounts into your business account. So, then you can see everything with the business log in.
