You can try now! Again, reports are Amex is being really generous with their Platinum retention offers right now. Might as well try while the gettin’s good, since you can technically cancel your card in about a week. Mention that your cardmember anniversary is coming up in the next week or so, that you’re deciding whether to keep or cancel the card, and wondering if they have any offers that’ll help you decide to keep it for another year. They may give you the usual talking points about spend, sell you on the card benefits, ask about your other cards; just have some good responses ready and be insistent. If there’s an offer on your account, they have to read it to you. If there’s nothing yet, wait til it’s been 1 year, and again when the AF posts, and maybe again just before the deadline to cancel. Good luck!
It was a no go on the retention offer. I could offset the AF with 55k MRs or change to the Green for a $95 AF. No thanks.

She did say I had some time to decide since the AF won't be posting until Oct :) I'll call back in a couple of weeks.

I just got a call from DVC Member Accounting. The rep said there was an issue with it's internal billing systems and you may notice 2 pending charges. I said I did and I called Quality Assurance yesterday and they said only one charge was going to go through. She confirmed this, said only one will post, and the other will just tie the funds up in pending status, but will never hit. The authorization should also drop off within 7 days.

She thanked me for being so on top of it already. I was like of course... it's $2,500 that I want to go towards another SUB :rotfl:

I’m sorry about that. :( I would definitely try again after 9/8, and you may have better luck after the AF has posted. Hopefully the retention offers are still good.

Poor DH is fielding all of the calls from family demanding we come home. We are debating between tomorrow morning or sunday morning
What all options do you have - don't you have a flight on Monday or Tuesday available also?

Just popping in to give a (new to me) data point about Kroger.....was told today at Customer Service desk that they will no longer accept credit cards when purchasing Amazon gift cards. Can of course, be a YMMV situation, but this was a store that I've been purchasing gift cards regularly with credit. She said they got an email SPECIFICALLY regarding Amazon and that they were now NOT ALLOWED to sell them for anything other than debit. Big time bummer for sure--especially regarding 4X gas points, etc.

Looks like folks who travel through JFK, LAX, DEN, LHR, and CLT will be waiting until 2020 for the new Amex Centurion Lounges. Only the PHX Centurion Lounge is expected to open this year.
Looks like we need to go visit DH's family in PHX so we can try it out. Might be a reason to be retain my Plat card :)

It says I need to have the money there by 9/23. Is that possible if I need to do 3 in and outs? I know some people complain about some banks taking a long time. And you move it into and out of same bank? So push $8k from my CU to disover then pull it back next day? And that doesn't look suspicious? lol Every time I look into these, I am like that is too much work.

Since it's a savings account they're not necessarily looking for a direct deposit, just any deposit of funds, so you could pull it into Discover (set up the transfer from Discover to pull money from your CU) and still count if that's faster than waiting for your CU to push it. When I initiate transactions from the Discover account it's usually complete in 2-3 business days. In theory if you estimated a week for each transaction you could pull it off by 9/23. I do believe the cancel trick is still working, if you get down to the wire.

I'm sure it would look suspicious to a human, but they have a computer checking and unless a human built in a rule that this wasn't allowed, the computer doesn't care.

They have fairly continuously offered a bonus for the last 2 years so, while nothing is guaranteed, it's likely they'll run it again when this term expires. It's very easy if you open near the beginning of the window, but if you're scrambling near the end without a large deposit, then it can feel like work. I was fortunate to have the full 25k to deposit in one go when I did mine so I didn't have to worry about the dates too much. (It was the last hurrah for that cash before I spent it. I miss it :sad1: )

Huh... I just bought an Amazon GC last week sometime to give as a gift (along with a few groceries and a Roblox GC) and paid with a credit card. Wonder when they got that email.

Yes - you can close it if you want. Don't forget the free checked bags benefit if you are gonna use the miles for flying.
Well, I suppose if I do end up going somewhere before next summer (a year from when I opened the card) I might check a bag (gosh I hate checking bags!) But I think at most we would check only one (if my husband I went somewhere). Surely you can check ONE bag on AA these days with no charge?

Basically I'm just trying to avoid keeping the card long enough for the annual fee to post (it was waived the first year).
