I've had a lot of public school teachers shame me for homeschooling but I've had a greater number encourage me and tell me if they could only turn back the clock, they'd do the same. And like you, I know quite a few homechool moms who are former public school teachers. You'd be surprised at the amount of homeschoolers that are former teachers. My final shove came from my DD1's second grade teacher who told me if she wasn't so connected to the other teachers, she'd homeschool her own kids. She only felt comfortable with them in the school because she knew the other teachers. I'm ever thankful she confided in me. I was in her classroom every single day volunteering.
The perception of homeschoolers has changed so much, even from when I began 14 years ago to now. Most were 'religious' still back when I first started but now it is much more mainstream. While we definitely enjoy the kids home and the ability to weave our faith all throughout the day (I don't consider myself 'religious'), that is at the bottom of the list as to WHY we homeschool. It's a 'lifestyle' for us and one that isn't always easy, but it's always worth it.
