I stand corrected. I guess that would only be true if the ring still existed. That being said, they probably WILL cut her a check, and then drop her. $12k is a LOT of money, and I am sure they wouldn't want to insure that amount again, as she would be high risk. But who knows. With that in mind, if I did file a claim, and they said I HAD to use the money on a ring FIRST, you can bet your butt I would find one with the 3 C's the same as my old one that were as close to $12,000 as I could get.

Again, I wouldn't count on getting a check for $12,000--I would count on getting a ring as close as possible to the one you had and not getting any actual money--and even then the insurance company probably paid less then your DH even did since they have contacts and wholesalers they use.
NOW, if your ring was unique, custom made by someone that was now dead and couldn't be replaced, yes, you would get a check for $12,000 but it sounds like it is a ring that can be reproduced.
There is a LOT of fraud with jewelry coverage in the insurance industry so that is why you probably won't actually get a check and you will get a replacement ring. It is too easy to say "oops, I lost my ring" and having it sit in your underwear drawer and file a claim thinking you are going to get a check for $12,000. ( not that this is what the OP did-this is just what happens all too often).
