I lost my engagement ring!

I stand corrected. I guess that would only be true if the ring still existed. :upsidedow That being said, they probably WILL cut her a check, and then drop her. $12k is a LOT of money, and I am sure they wouldn't want to insure that amount again, as she would be high risk. But who knows. With that in mind, if I did file a claim, and they said I HAD to use the money on a ring FIRST, you can bet your butt I would find one with the 3 C's the same as my old one that were as close to $12,000 as I could get. :snooty: ;)

Again, I wouldn't count on getting a check for $12,000--I would count on getting a ring as close as possible to the one you had and not getting any actual money--and even then the insurance company probably paid less then your DH even did since they have contacts and wholesalers they use.

NOW, if your ring was unique, custom made by someone that was now dead and couldn't be replaced, yes, you would get a check for $12,000 but it sounds like it is a ring that can be reproduced.

There is a LOT of fraud with jewelry coverage in the insurance industry so that is why you probably won't actually get a check and you will get a replacement ring. It is too easy to say "oops, I lost my ring" and having it sit in your underwear drawer and file a claim thinking you are going to get a check for $12,000. ( not that this is what the OP did-this is just what happens all too often).

The more I think about it, the more I think you are right. You'd be pretty hard pressed to just walk into a random store and see a $12000 ring. Aren't most priced in the $3000 - $6000 range? Perhaps for the less expensive rings, they cut their losses (and checks!) but they probably DO things differently for such expensive rings.

Please don't give up hope! My mom lost her diamond out of her ring( a nurse also) she never expected to find it, but lo and behold toward the end of her shift she saw something sparkly near a patient room door. It was her diamond! Talk about lucky! I have also found a Diamond near a doorway at my job, the husband was sooooo happy. We had a flashlight and were checking the parking lot and everything, I walked in the main door and there it was!:cool1:

If you choose to not accept the replacement ring the insurance company offers, you have the option to take the cash instead, BUT the amount will be what that replacement ring would cost the insurance company. The amount will be much less than your appraised/insured amount.

Thanks for all the input everyone.... I called my insurance agent and I am waiting to hear back from him at some point today!

I lost my 12 years ago when we were moving. I took them off the night before and put them in my purse because we were painting some rooms before moving in. The next afternoon I went to put them on and my engagement ring (solitare and wrap) was missing but my other rings were in my purse where I put all of them. :headache: I search everywhere. I think someone who helped us move stole them but can't prove it.

We did turn in a claim against our home owners policy. I didn't have a recent appraisal but did have the original paperwork when they were purchased and pictures of me wearing the rings so they could see what they looked like. We had to pay the $500 deductible and the insurance co told us to go to a specific jewelry store and purchase a replacement up to the amount the appraised the rings for by the documention I gave them. We paid the jewelry store $500 and they settled with State Farm.

I could have picked out a different style of ring but wanted one as close to the one that was lost because DH had picked them out.

I am absolutely heartbroken. I worked last night and during the course of my shift I realized my engagement ring was not on my finger. I work in a hospital and put gloves on and take them off all night long. I recently lost some weight, and noticed that my ring was not fitting as snugly as it used to, but it was not so loose as to make me nervous. Work was extremely busy and we had a very critically ill patient and I was in and out of many patient rooms so I literally washed my hands/disinfected with that alcohol foam and put gloves on and of so many times, and in so many places that I can't even begin to count. When I realized I lost my ring, I looked through some trash cans, but frankly, that isn't even a very safe thing to do in a hospital and the trash had even been emptied in a few rooms. It is hopeless.

My ring is insured, but I had to sleep and was too uspet to even call the insurance company today. How does that work? DH and I put it on our homeowners policy (it is listed seperately) 4 years ago and they have a copy of the appraisal on file. I guess I will have to call them Monday and see what can be done. Does insurance cover a loss in this situation? I hate to admit it, but I really don't know WHAT my insurance covers, or how it works, I have never placed any kind of insurance claim before in my life.

My wife is a nurse too, and when we were engaged, she wore her engagement ring on a necklace while at work, for just this reason. She may have done it at times with the engagement/wedding ring combo, but they are welded, and fit more snugly so its not as much of an issue now.

...I'm sorry to hear about the loss of your ring - I know that I would be pretty upset too....you DO have a great outlook on the lost item when compared to that patient you spoke of....that being said, perhaps you can make NEW sentimental memories with a new ring; perhaps you have a special anniversary coming up. Or, why not make a big deal about it? Call it a 'FOREVER' ring and throw a little party with your family....or mebbe a 'I'd-Do-It-All-Over-Again' ring....something to make it really special!
