Hi everyone! I’m very new to the DIS boards – I only found you all while I was planning our very first Disney cruise – the 4/21/11 3-night on the Dream. I read so much on the boards, and found all of the trip reports very helpful - not to mention how they got me so excited for my own cruise! Actually, my addiction to the DIS boards was quite complete, as I bookmarked pages on my iPhone and read the boards any time I had 10 seconds free – yep, I was hooked! :surfweb: So, I thought I’d jump in with my own trip report!

Our cruising gang is: myself, DH, DD (11), DS (7), and my Mom and Dad. All of the grown-ups had been on only a couple of cruises before – DH and I with NCL and my parents with NCL and Disney’s Big Red Boat. For the kids, this was their first cruise ever!

We knew, since we were traveling during Easter breaks and from reading the boards, to expect crowds. So, we approached our trip with an expectation of having to wait sometimes, and to do our best to look on the up-side of things and try to have fun whatever we were doing. I definitely believe that a positive attitude helps!

Pre-Cruise:

We arrived in Orlando the Friday before the cruise, rented a house in Kissimmee, and spent time at the parks – Epcot, Universal Islands of Adventure (to see Harry Potter), and the Magic Kingdom. Thank goodness for FastPass and the wait-time apps on my iPhone – at WDW we were able to get to almost every ride we wanted to – even with peak crowds. The Flower and Garden Festival at Epcot was absolutely beautiful – and I just love watching Illuminations! Universal was where we felt the most like sardines in a can. So hot and so crowded – even the Cat in the Hat ride was over an hour wait! Harry Potter was very cool (and our main reason for going there), but my kids do not like roller coasters & scary rides, so we probably won’t be returning to Universal again.

The day before the cruise we spent in our rental house – I wanted the kids to have plenty of time to swim in the pool (since we heard how crowded the pools on the Dream would be), and the grownups relaxed on the lanai, swam, did some laundry and re-packed for the cruise. And after pounding the parks for 3-days in a row (and believe me, we were exhausted!), we wanted to be well rested for the Dream! :yay:

Next installment – Embarkation Day!

To tide you over until my next post, here’s my favorite photo I took of the Dream while on Castaway Cay…

Thanks for reading!!

very good start...I can't wait for the rest.

WOW!!! That picture is beautiful! Great report...can't wait to read more. First time family cruise coming up! What type of camera did you have, if you don't mind my asking?

That picture is enough to hook me!:thumbsup2 I can't wait to read about your experience on the cruise. I am surprising DH for his 40th birthday with a 3 night DREAM cruise. I'll be interested to know if you thought the cruise was long enough to do everything you wanted to.

Great start, I'm ready to read more!popcorn::

It's funny - I have a pre-trip camera story. The week before we left for Florida, I let my friend borrow my compact digital camera because her's was broken - they were taking their daughter to an aquarium for her birthday, and didn't have time to choose another camera beforehand. Unfortunately, during that excursion, *my* camera broke - the lens mechanism failed! Ack!! So, I needed a new camera *fast*!!

I was going to take my "big" camera - I have a very nice Nikon DSLR, but I really didn't want to lug a large camera around the theme parks. I did a little internet searching and just before we left, I bought a new compact camera - a Nikon Coolpix S8100 - it was on sale because a newer model had come out.

I was sooo lucky that my old camera broke, because this camera was a perfect travel camera! It takes great pictures, even in low light. The auto setting adjusts very well. And it takes HD video, so I left my separate video camera home too. The whole trip, I only had to carry this one camera, and it fit into my purse or belt-pack! Woo Hoo!! I just love it!

:cool1:

The 3 night was definitely short - I wasn't ready to leave the ship! We were busy and having fun the entire trip, taking time to do activities, and relax and enjoy. But there were definitely things that I didn't get to do that I wanted to do - so hopefully we'll be able to do another Disney cruise someday!

I had a good feeling when I left the ship, though, even though it was short. I had an amazing time, but left the ship wanting to return! :)

4/21/11 Embarkation Day Part 1 – The Cruise Terminal

So very excited today! My parents and I have been wanting to take the kids on a Disney cruise for years, and today was finally the day! We ate breakfast at the house in Kissimmee, packed up, and were on the road just before 10am – us in our rental car, and my parents in their car behind us. We hit some traffic getting out of Orlando, but arrived at PC at about 11:20am. After reading the boards, I warned my family about the cruise terminal, and how we might have to wait a long time before boarding, and how there was nothing to eat at the terminal. So I had our carryon loaded with granola bars & snacks & prepped the kids for a long wait. :cool2: Here’s a photo of one of our first glimpses of the Dream:

We drove up to security & showed our IDs, then up to a CM who directed us to the luggage drop off lane. We unloaded the cars, and a porter took our bags and explained to my husband & Dad where to park and told me to have everyone’s passports & cruise documents and to head inside to check us in. So, in we went through security to scan our carryons and up the escalator to the check in area.

At first we were a bit disoriented, as there were lines in different places, and you couldn’t tell where to go. There was a large line in the middle, which I later found out was for character autographs – I think Mickey & Minnie were there, right in front of a model of the Dream. Finally I spotted someone with a health form in their hands, and saw them on tables in the center – when we headed over to fill ours out, a nice CM was there to tell us where the check in line was. Well, I say, “line” but there really wasn’t one – just one family ahead of us. And, by this time, the guys had returned from the parking garage. The CM at the head of the check in area gave us a boarding card - #15 and directed us to an open CM to check in and get our photos taken. Check-in proceeded quickly, and the CM looked at our boarding card, winked at me, and crossed out the 15 and wrote 5!! Woo hoo! :woohoo:

My parents found a place to sit, while we went over the Kids Club line to get a wrist band for DS. This line was a bit longer – but it took us less than 15 minutes to get through. By this time, they started calling boarding numbers and there was a pile of people standing near the opening looking like they were ready to storm the ship! It seemed kind of silly to me, since you couldn’t get on until they called your number, and there was plenty of space, and seats, near the entrance to the terminal. So, we found seats and settled in to wait. Here’s a photo of the “cluster” of people, from the vantage point of our seats near the entrance with some helpful info to find your way around the terminal! :wizard:

After taking the kids for a rest room break, we probably waited less than 15 minutes for them to call boarding number 5! We were on our way. We weaved our way through the crowd, up to and through the Mickey ears…checked in with our key cards, posed for photos and then walked onto the ship. What a thrill to hear them call our family names and the applause of the CMs as we walked onto the Dream’s beautiful atrium!! :yay:

Total time:
Arrival at Port Canaveral – 11:20am
Walked into atrium on the Dream - 12:25pm
Wow – One Hour to get on the ship – way beyond our expectations! Very cool!

Next Installment – Embarkation Day Part 2 – Touring & Sail Away!

Seems like embarkation was a breeze for your family! I think that being prepared is definitely important!

The ship is HUGE!! I've seen some pictures before, but wow! I hope it doesn't swallow my family and I whole!!:lmao:

very interesting tr so far! looking forward to more pics... maybe some of your family too??? Ready to hear more... planning a December cruise on the Dream... I can't do 3 nights anymore so we are doing a 4 nighter. :surfweb:

LOVE that 1st photo!!! I can not wait to hear more and see more of your photo's:)

We'll be first-timers on the Dream in August, and I just love your report!

The photos are great - really appreciate the labels in the terminal - so helpful! We have two pre-teens and a pre-schooler, so I'll be interested to hear what your kids thought of the Oceaneer Club/Lab and the Edge.

And I have the Nikon S8100, too - it's been with me for several Disney trips and I absolutely love it!

Fantastic report so far! Cannot wait for moooooore!!!!! Gorgeous pic to start and thanks a gazillion times over for the labeled terminal pic. We'll be first time cruisers (for any cruise line) in September. The embarkation is something I've worried about a bit. Glad to hear it can be a pleasant experience! :thumbsup2

Subbing!!!!

This is awesome! Thanks for the info!

The Terminal pic is GREAT, thanks for sharing. Can't wait to hear more! One question....how do you post pictures on your TR?? I've tried but I can't get it to work. I don't have my pics stored on-line, they are on my compter. Can I add them from my computer or do I have to put them on-line and then download them? Thanks! Glad you enjoyed your trip, we go in a few weeks!!!

Busy, crazy day today - and I still have post-vacation laundry piled up - arrgh!! Hoping to get my next TR installment up tomorrow!
