Sorry if this is too much info. My sister just called me. She is having a really tough time right now, she's pregnant, having a rough pregnancy and newly divorced and she's getting ready to move into an apartment. She has 2 boys. Yesterday at Easter her older son had a fever and didn't eat and was mopey. Today he had a high fever so she took him to the doctor. He has strep throat but the doctor didn't think it should warrent such a high fever that won't come down with tylenol/motrin. And the doctor said it could be something unrelated.

So get this all taken care of and now she called me. Her younger 3 year old son wasn't complaining about anything but he went potty twice and both times, the urine was clear but right when he was done, blood came out of his you know what. She collected the urine the 2nd time and she found a clot in it, she said it just looked like body tissue but was still weird... and then once he was done again, the blood came out again.

He doesn't have a fever or is complaining but the blood and that clot is scaring the heck out of my sister and she doesn't know what to do. She can't get ahold of her ex husband and she doesn't know if it warrents a trip to the ER or not. She'd have to pay out of pocket right now because her ex is a jerk who failed to tell her she needed to save receipts from doc visits and prescriptions so they cancelled her ex's insurance card that had the money already on it. Plus with her older son being sick and she's having a rough pregnancy I was just hoping to see if anyone here had any advice or suggestions as to what this could be. I hate to see her sitting in the ER all night if it isn't something that can't wait until morning.

What do you all think? I know you hate these threads because of asking total strangers but i'm just asking for opinions! Thanks.

Definitely! That poor kid sounds like they need to go the the ER right NOW

Though it will no doubt be expensive, I think she has to get some help at this point. She needs to go to the ER or to one of those emergency medical places. Blood in the urine could be a urinary tract infection, but it's strange to hear it described as "coming out at the end" ... I'm worried about them both. Please keep us updated.

I'd go to the ER.

I had to go to the ER two days before my insurance kicked in back in August. Expensive, yes, but I pay what I can each month and it hasn't been a problem.

My sister just called back, she called the doctor and she said to wait until morning and make an appt. She said that UTI's in circumsized boys is highly unlikely. And she said that all they would do at the ER is do a urine test and if nothing abnormal send him home and if something abnormal, they would still send him home to follow up with a specialist... so not worth it. Can't push her to do it and pay the money if the doctor told her it wasn't neccisary but can't help but still worry some.

If "probably not" a UTI, any suggestions what it could be?

I hate to say this, because I know money is tight for a newly divorced mom, but, money should never be the factor preventing medical care for a child.

She can make arrangements with the hospital later. As long as she pays something each month, even $10, hospitals will work with her.

I think it isn't so much the money, heck we owe the hospital over $2000 in co pays still after my troubled pregnancy & my kids vcug tests for kidney reflux. And we pay very little a month.

It's more the trouble of it all, being sickly pregnant with another sick son who I would prefer go to grandma's because my kids can not afford to get sick.

In my unprofessional medical opinion....a blood clot coming out of a 3 year olds ***** is an emergency. If my 3 year old son had a blood clot come out of his *****, I wouldn't even hesitate. Any hospital will set up a payment plan if insurance won't cover it. Get that baby to a doctor. I can't even believe that is a question that needs to be asked.

This child needs to go to the ER immediately. If you can see blood in the urine or especially a blood clot, that is an emergency situation and the child may require hospitalization. This could indicate an infection in the kidneys, urinary tract, prostate, or bladder. There may have been some damage to the kidneys or even kidney disease.

This is not something that can be diagnosed over the Internet; it requires a physical examination of the child. To not take the child to the doctor or ER in this situation is nothing short of neglect.

Alarming as it sounds she did speak to the pediatrician and was told it could wait until the next day. In my experience with ER visits they usually do a whole lot of nothing for a whole lot of money.

Thank you AuntieMo, I thought the same thing.

She took him to the doctor this morning and she was perplexed BUT she checked for infection and there is none so it's not a "right now" emergency. They sent the sample to the lab for detail analasis and he goes back on Thursday, if it is some sort of inner infection, then he will go on antibiotics. If no infection and he is still having it, then they will run further tests. But there is no Emergency as of now... thanks all.

:grouphug: Hope they find an answer quickly and it is nothing serious.

I just wanted to chime in and say that I hope that you and your sis know that urinary reflux runs in families. So if it came from your side of the family, your sister's kids may have it too. Just an FYI. This is something I have a lot of experience with with my own kids.

Hope your sis gets some answers soon. That would freak me out!

Found this on the internet. Talks about blood at the end of the "stream."

Blood in the urine is always a concern. It should be taken seriously. Your doctor will want to determine the cause. Bleeding can be due to:
* bladder infections,
* bladder stones,
* prostate disorders,
* kidney stones,
* kidney disease, or
* cancer of the kidney, bladder, or prostate.

It could also be a sign of certain rare conditions outside the urinary system.

Blood in urine may appear pink, bright red, or smoky brown. The timing when one sees blood during the urine stream may give a clue to the source. If it appears at the start and clears during the stream, the source may be lower down, in the ***** or urethra (the tube from the bladder to the outside). If it appears at the end of the stream, bleeding may be from the bladder neck or (in men) the prostate area. If it appears throughout the stream, the source may be the bladder, kidneys, or the tubes connecting them.
