I'll be travelling to California in February for a visit to DL, then the Mexican Riviera Cruise on DCL and then a stay in San Diego. Trying to figure out the best way to get from LAX to DL, from DL to the DCL cruise terminal and then back to airport (or elsewhere) to pick up a rental car. Suggestions?

I think the DCL Forum (scroll further down the Forums page) might be able to give you more advice. They have threads that deal with transfers there.
