Went to the Mk for a few hrs yesterday. I was in the Emporium looking around and I overheard a gentleman guest asking two Cms at one of the cash registers where he could buy some chicken for lunch in the park. One of the CM's said "there is a food court restaurant in Tomorrowland that serves burgers and roasted chikcen and salads" then she proceeded to ask the other CM next to her what the name of the retaurant is because she didnt know and this other CM didnt know the name , either. I almost piped up and told them it is Cosmic Rays, but i decided to let them figure it out for themselves. So one of the Cms picked up a map, looked at it and discovered they were indeed thinking of Cosmic rays. I thought it was odd that neither of these CMs knew the name of this restaurant without looking at a map.

During this time of year, they employ alot of part timers, so it might be a possibility that they weren't 100% sure. I too have found it odd when you overhear a conversation as to where is the closest restroom. I want to pipe up myself sometimes because I think they send them out of their way.

At least they didn't say to the guy I don't know go ask someone else. At least they got out a map to help him.

CM's come in all degrees of experience....Full Time, Part Time, Seasonal, College Program and ....brand new....and, also those picking up a shift in an area/park apart from their usual. And yes, we don't all know everything, but we will do our best to find out for our Guests :)

As far as myself: although I've eaten there countless times, once in a while my brain will freeze and the name "Cosmic Ray's" will not come to me and I keep thinking "Sonny Eclipse" :rolleyes1 Other times I might be trying to describe the Lunching Pad underneath the Astro Orbiter and Tomorrowland Terrace (ala Disneyland) comes to the tip of my tongue first  ;)

During crowded periods, CMs are moved to whatever area they are needed. My sister is a CM at DTD. They often take people from the DTD shops and put them in the parks to cover crowds and pick up extra hours. These CMs may not be as knowledgeable as many guests concerning things in the park. Many CMs spend very little time in the theme parks unless they work there full time. Even then, they are only doing their jobs, not touring the parks.

I found it surprising when I first moved to the Orlando area how many people who live within five miles of WDW, have never visited or rarely visit WDW.

Yeah... sometimes the classic "brain fart" also gets the CM's. When you are asked the same question 20 bazillion times a day ( When is the 3:00 parade, Where do I get this, that, and everything between, what time is this, or that.) when something new comes out, sometimes it's like...uhhh...uhhh..... wait a second...

Funny you should mention that , b/c I find it suprising too!

When DD started high school here, she wanted some of her new friends to visit the parks with her. They don't have Florida resident passes. One of the girls has lived in this area all her life and has never been to WDW other than DTD.

Everyone where we are thinks we are nuts for having them! I could imagine living here without them. My nephews have lived here all their lives and have only been to WDW once or twice, the youngest never. I just don't get it, you have this great place within miles of your front door, that you can spend the day and play and if you go 4 times or to 4 parks it's paid for itself and no one does it.

I have relatives that live near WDW, too, and they have no desire to go there. Not in a bad way, but I think when you live right near WDW you might take it for granted.

I live about 15 minutes from Washington DC and I've NEVER done the White House tour, seen the national monuments, etc. I went to the Smithsonian when I was little on a field trip, but that's about it.

I also live right near Six Flags America and I have no desire to go there whatsoever.

Believe it or not, not everyone is a Disney Fan. Why would you assume because people live near by they would attend all the time? Your passions are not necessarily everyone else's passion . . .

This is true I'm just glad we are PARK people .We have season passes to the SIX FLAGS in D.C. and now WDW as well. We go to all the carni's as well.

While this is true I still can't believe that so many people dont' take advantage of living here. Esp those with kids.

Unfortunately not everyone can afford to go to Disney. For one kid and two parents it would cost ~$150 for one day in just tickets. Then there are meals, parking, snacks, and other expenses in addition. Alot of people don't want to spend that much just to go to a park for one day. Depending on the age of the kids, after they go once, they will want to go again and have more fun.

While I agree somewhat, we can get Florida resident passes. It would definately be expensive at one point, but then you have a year of free entrance to every park and free parking.

In my opinion, people don't go because they just are not that into Disney. They hear about it every day everywhere here. Maybe it is overload. IMHO, it is a great place to go just for an hour or two to stroll around an soak up the atmosphere or have lunch.

The other thing to remember is that many people here work there. Do you go to your place of employment on your off hours for fun? My sister is a CM at DTD. The last place she usually wants to go when she is off is DTD.

I know I've taken this thread OT. My original point was that CMs normally don't spend a great deal of time in the theme parks. There are some who are totally into WDW, like those that post on this board. I'd say they are in the minority. I always get a kick out of those threads where people are worried about the locals filling up the parks. That is not usually the problem.

While I understand the expensive of it, when you think of all you are getting for the year it's not that bad. We got PAP's for Florida Residents, get all the parks , all the extras, some discounts, and free parking for a year. It cost me less to get PAP's then it would of been to take a weeks vacation to WDW.

I love doing this. Actually debating doing it tonight LOL

Sorry to keep this OT, but we have the same things at DLR. I think since we live so close there is a lot of overkill for many and they just dont go because of that and because its right there. No need to go when they can go anytime. Even if they dont. And I agree that many of the CM probably dont spend their off time in the parks. Who would want to go to their place of employment (if I worked at Disney I might).

It does amaze me though that there are a lot of CMs who dont know things that just seem like they should. Simple questions about how to get to one attraction or what time does the park close......and they are stumped. I dont expect all CMs to know Disney trivia or have every answer for my every question. But simple general things they should know. Lucky for me, most of the ones I have dealt with have been very informative and helpful. And if they didn't know for sure my answer, they were quick to find out for me or ask another CM.
