Is there a "Renting DVC Points for Dummies" thread? Just starting my research and really don't know if this will work for us our not. But would like to know the details of all options for booking a stay at WDW.

Thanks!

First and foremost you need to know when you want to travel and what kind of accommodations you need.

Find a points chart and figure out how many points your stay requires. I suggest you look at David's Vacation Club Rentals site. There is a convenient chart and a full explanation of the rental process. His rates are good and they are reputable.

You also have the option of renting from a private owner. There is a rent/trade thread on this board. It could save you a little money if you go this way. Usually DVC rentals are final with no cancellation policy, sometimes private owners will work with you if it's early enough in the process.

If you want to rent a specific resort you should start early. Owners at all resorts have an 11 month booking advantage before non-owners can book there. All other resorts can be booked at 7 months. DVC seasons and Disney cash seasons aren't the same. The busiest times for DVC are late September through January so if you want to go at that time you will need to book as far in advance as possible.

Refer to the thread "DVC rentals---what is it?" on this board. http://www.disboards.com/threads/dvc-rentals-what-is-it.3384672/

Hope this helps. Good luck!

I've rented several times before we finally bought in last year. If you have any questions, feel free to PM me. The above posted link and the rest of this board has such a wealth of information! I read a ton before I rented the first time and was well prepared for the first of many wonderful trips! :jumping1:

Like above poster said look at point charts for various resorts with your dates. David's rental is reputable... I just rented my points thru them and had a great experience.
Maybe give them your top 2 or 3 preference unless your set in specific resort. You will save a lot of money off rack rate!
Only thing is be very sure of your dates when you rent you pay full price up front and there is NO cancellation.

Family of six would need a 2 BR. Lowest points for that and probably easy to get is OKW. Rooms are huge.

I agree with OKW especially for a large family.

A combination of lower points so it would be a bit less expensive and easier to get resort because it's so large.

Villas are huge and there is plenty of room to spread out. It's a wonderful resort.

Meaning lower point resort and easier to get reservation

I believe DizBub was saying that the combination of (a) lower points at OKW and (b) the fact that OKW is so large, so there are lots of rooms usually available, means that (c) OKW is a top contender when looking at what DVC resort to choose for a large family.

:-) OKW was the first DVC resort to be built. They had no idea at the time that the whole timeshare thing would turn out as big as it currently is and, I don't believe, they knew exactly how people would use it. The rooms are, I'm pretty sure, the largest of all the DVC resorts but it's not within walking distance of any parks.

Like any hotel, the DVC timeshare resorts have limits on the number of people you can put in a room. A Studio allows 4 or 5 (depending on resort) and a 1-Bedroom allows 4 or 5 (again, depending on resort.) You would need a 2-Bedroom unit to support 6 individuals. The number of points a rooms "costs" is dependent on four main factors - what resort, what type of room, what view and what time of year. A Studio will cost a certain amount, a 1-bedroom even more, and a 2-Bedroom more than that. So the lower points at OKW is a plus. The size of the rooms compared to other resorts is a plus. And the fact that there are lots of rooms in the resort is a plus. (The views and time of year don't matter much, in terms of the question "how many people in the party" so there's little reason to go into those.)

One more question -- is it possible to get 2 studios ? I know it doesn't work like a hotel room that we could get a joining rooms..........
I'm playing with numbers to figure out the most economical. The problem is the only time my DH and I both have vacation time off is in June :rolleyes1 So we're looking at higher costs
Then we don't have a block of time off together until Christmas

Thanks!

Yes 2 studios can work request as close together as possible and 1 adult for each room would work... No washer/ dryer or full kitchen... But toaster and microwave/fridge( small )in studio

I believe the only DVC resort with the ability to link studios is the Poly and that is not even guaranteed or a booking category.

If you are ok with renting 2 studios that may or may not be close together it could work. I, personally would not want to split up on a family vacation though. A couple of years ago we got a 2 bedroom and our daughter got a 1 bedroom at BWV we were on opposite ends of the resort. Same thing happened at BCV. Those are some long hallways.
