I know Kevin must've explained this at some point, but I must've missed it.

What's the deal with the pronounciation of Narcoossee's? I know Kevin has said that he and other locals pronounce it one way (NAR-ca-sees) while others seem to prounounce it like this: (Nar-COO-sees).

Can anyone give me the "backstory" on this?

I think it's just a local thing.

There is a small town about 17 miles from Disney and most people that live in this area pronounce it NAR-ka-see. Disney pronounces the restaurant Nar-COO-see's.

In Texas, they pronounce it HYOO-ston. In NYC, it's HOUSE-ton Street.

And let's not even talk about some of the places in Massachusetts.;)

I dont think there is a right or wrong, as far as pronunciation.

Supposedly, the word Narcoossee is a Creek Indian word meaning "little bear".

The H is silent in HYOO-ston. :rotfl2:

Thanks everyone, for the responses.

Kevin, that's interesting about the local pronounciation. I'm actually very interested in regional accents and dialects, so I'm not surprised by this at all. Example of this exist in every region of the country, as your other examples illustrate.

Thanks again!!:thumbsup2

What about Akershus? How in the world do you pronounce this?

Thanks!

Good question. I say it like this: A-KER-shus

Another podcaster who shall remain nameless (ok, it's Lou Mongello :rotfl:) pronounces Teppan Edo like (Teppan Eh-do) instead of (Teppan Eee-do) like just about everyone else. :confused3

Maine has some pretty strange proninciations as well. Took me the longest time to say Vienna as VY-enna and ther is no such thing as a pronounceable -er. :rotfl:

You Americans say everything funny!

Hearing you guys say 'Birmingham', 'Edinburgh' or 'Hertfordshire' makes me giggle like mad!

Nissan as well! We pronounce it more like Nis-zan, where as you guys pronounce it more like Nysaaaaan. When the type of car which was discovered in New York yesterday was announced on the news by the Police chief, I had to look up what he said!

Don't even get me started on aluminium!!! :rotfl:

And you guys spell everything funny...we all know color is spelled C-O-L-O-R not Colour----:rotfl: (it always looks very smart when you guys spell things)

I've always wondered about Akershus as well...I say Akers-hoos...like 'House of Akers". Not sure what the right pronunciation is as I've heard it said several different ways by the CM's.

You guys always miss out letters! :lmao:

And Calais is Callus. It now sounds "normal" to me, but if I ever go to France, I am going to say "Callay".

And when an international plane needs to make an unscheduled landing because of an unruly passenger or terrorist suspect, they land in Bangor. Pronounce as it looks, Bang-or. Not Bang-er!

Oh I know it drives me crazy when I hear people say Bang-er!!!

I'm not a native Texan, but I got here as fast as I could. Since when is the H silent in Houston? My husband was born and raised there and he pronounces the H.

Living here for over 35 years, I can honestly say that everyone here does not say the "H" is Houston nor do the say the "H" in Humble, pronouncing the city as Umble.

As a Native Texan (not a native Houstonian, I'm from DFW), I've always said the "H" in Houston. Can't say I talk about Humble enough to know for sure what I say. ;)

Now I do know the H in Humble is silent. But I still disagree about the H in Houston. Maybe it is a younger generation thing. My husband is 52 and I am not that far behind him. I have lived in Texas longer than 35 years.

I'd like to take this opportunity to state, yet again, that in Iowa we pronounce everything right.

Just kidding, we're not that self-absorbed...really. Ok, maybe a little bit. ;)
