I know I've already asked but I need more specific answers.

Do you have a problem with taking over the counter motion sickness medication? I'm pretty sensitive myself and I'll be taking it preventatively, because there are few things i hate more than throwing up.
I'm going in August and can report back if your cruise is later than mine.
Also, check out Conorama's trip report. Her kid is pretty sensitive and she addresses the speed of the ship a couple of times. And her reports are fun to read.

Chase - ask about Bonine. I am also very prone to movement and this works for me very well. A couple hints however, start it the day BEFORE your cruise so its already in your system... and take it a day or 2 AFTER your cruise to alleviate the feeling of still being on the ship. Youll do fine!

I'll be going on my first cruise in August too. I'll ask my Primary Care Physician about any other alternatives to Dramamine for my kids (10 & 12). Maybe he will suggest something that you might be able to use too.

I'd talk to your parents about motion sickness preventative medications and even having a chat with your pediatrician if need be. If you aren't keen on taking medications right away, I'd suggest using SeaBands, which use acupressure points on your inner wrists to help prevent nausea. As others have mentioned, you'll likely have varied reports re. speed of ship and sea conditions. Good luck!

While you are sailing the Inside Passage, you are surrounded on both sides by land. We found it to be extremely smooth. In my experience, speed is not as important as whether you are sailing with the current or across. For instance, the Gulf Stream runs parallel to the coast of Florida. When you leave Florida and head out to sea across the current, you experience more movement. Also, If conditions are stormy and the wind is high, it will create high waves and thus more movement.

Ok I will. I'm assuming yours is earlier than mine, I'm in June of NEXT year. I'll try to find her report. Thanks!

Do you have a link to this report? I can't seem to find it :(

I have never packed medicine or taken precautions. I have to go, I'm only a teen. I was asking to see if anybody knew from their last cruise and so I could get a basic idea.

Sorry but I didn't know you had no choice going. I agree with others here that you should talk to your doctor about options. I use Dramamine on whale watch trips out of Maine and it helps.

Ok, thanks!

Chase,
yes, I'm sailing in August of this year. I'll do my best to report back on ship speed and movement. I doubt I'll be able to tell you much about seasickness itself as I don't want to chance it and I'll be medicated. ;-)

Here is the link to the report. It's a good read. Enjoy: https://www.disboards.com/threads/t...am-trek-to-alaska-july-27-aug-3-2015.3437413/
Thanks for the link, and yeah, medicate yourself, I wouldn't want to be the reason for a bad trip.

I was surprise by how fast the ship went on open water last year. And, it seemed to do it during our late dining, which made everything worse. One night, the wind was so strong at dinner, that the ship was leaning to the side the whole time. I kept thinking all the stuff on the table would slide off. The servers said it was more intense than what they were used to, but not unusual for being in open ocean up there.

Bonine works for me. It says it is non drowsy, but it does make me sleep very deep and very soundly. I think the combination of speeding up and the late eating time is what really did me in those nights.

Not really. What will make a ship roll more ( side to side) pitch ( up and down) or even corkscrew ( combination of both) is from what direction the waves are coming from how big and how far apart, in relation to the ships foward motion. All of DCLs ships have stabilizers to help reduce the rolling effect. Pitching, will really depend on how far apart the waves are. The farther apart, the more gentle the pitch. Closer together the same size waves will cause the same pitch more frequently. As far as speed goes, the ship will make the same speed, since she has a schedule to make. Unless the waves get into the 20-30 foot range in which case shell slow down, to decrease the stress on the hull. But those are few and far in between.

I could read your posts all day long, I just love your knowledge and writing style. I think cruising with you would be awesome but you'd probably kill me because I wouldn't stop asking you questions. Thank you for sharing your knowledge of the seas, (maybe that should be a new RCCL ship and you could captain it), with us.

I would like to say I hope I'm not sounding like I don't want to go. I just want to clear that up. I would go no matter what.

Thank you. I'm flattered. I don't have a problem with people asking me questions on a cruise. In 2010 when my wife and I got married, we had a couple from.Germany in our cruise group that was never on a cruise let a lone a Disney cruise and I took them on a hidden mickey tour of the terminal before we left. My son who is now looking to become a imagineer is always asking about technical aspects of the ships and parks so I'm used to it.

As far as being Capt of an RCCL ship there's 2 ironies. One is my initials happen to be RCL, and im actually wokring on getting my Capt lic. Alot of what the capt of the ships have done as far as rules of the road, navigation, etc I've done years ago when I first started boating on my own in N.Y.. Not to the extent that they have but it's similar. The basics don't change. I was born and raised on the water. One of my first doctor's appts as a newborn my doctor was getting worried because my skin color was not what it should be. My mom had to explain it was suntan from being on my grandparents boat at 4 days old.

One of my many job descriptions is a instructor. One of the books I've read along with the classes I've taken suggest that when you explain something to someone if you not only answer the question but explain the details behind it, it makes things clearer.

I have no problem with anyone that finds me on a ship that wants to ask questions, do the Hidden Mickey game or DCL trivia. To me it's fun and fascinating.

I 2nd this.
I would talk to my doctor in your shoes also. But the 2nd thing is there is such a thing as being pshychosymatic. Which in English means that you can talk your self into getting sick. There's any number of ways to keep from being sick, but I would start with my doctor if you are truly that bad. There could very well be an underlying reason that has nothing to do with motion.

Don't get me wrong I'm not suggesting that it's in your head or over exaggerating or anything like that. But worrying about it won't make it better. 1 of the best things to do is relax and have fun.

Well said!!!

While I don't deny that there are people who really do get motion sick, I think there are also some who hear about people getting sick (or kids who hear a parent talking about getting seasick/worrying about it) and worry themselves into it. Again, not everyone. But some.

I can only report that, as a 1 year old, I was "sick as a dog" for the whole trip when we sailed across the Atlantic. And, as a young child, I was airsick more times than I care to count. But, as an adult, I have absolutely no issues with motion sickness.
