I know file sharing is illegal ( mp3 ) but has this gone way too far?

"This CD may not play in DVD players, car stereos, portable players, game players, all PCs and Macintosh PCs." Best of all, the insert explains that this is all "in order for you to enjoy a high quality music experience." Now, that's quality.

What?? So where can you use it? The only time I listen to CDs is in the car. Who really uses their Stereo CD player that much now a days?

I don't even have a stereo with a CD player in it. We use our computers, DVD players and car stereos.

This is probably not the band's doing. It probably started as a reasonable idea to try to eliminate file-sharing and swapping but it got sent to a committee that produced this monstrosity.

so if my stereo (from the 90's!) can play CD-R/RW disks...it might not be able to play this disk..

what a waste of money

I don't know about you...but if I shell out $10 for a CD you can bet your bippy I'm going to rip it to my mp3 player, my computer hard drive, and use the disk in my car stereo. IMO - I bought the right to use the CD in that manner. (note - I, personally, do not upload/share the music.)

I have CDs that do this - they're practically unusable. Ho hum - back to iTunes :p

Rich::

I use it in my car and its on MP3 and oh - I have burnt a copy so its rubbish!!! :) P.S - it is a great album though

Ugh things like that just really annoy me. They are making it harder and harder to just enjoy the music. This would make me less likely to go out and buy the cd because I would be so afraid that it wouldn't play in anything I own.

I actually had a college professor that went to the Kazaa court case. The recording industry doesn't understand how Kazaa works, so he went to explain to them that Kazaa was not doing anything illegal.

Worse yet was what Sony was caught doing a couple of months ago. If you made the mistake of putting certain Sony music CDs in your computer, the CD would automatically load software on your PC that prevented you from making illegal copies of that CD. The unfortunate side effect (aside from the fact that they were installing software on your PC without permission) is that the software could make it easier for certain viruses to infect your PC.

Copyright protection is one thing, but deliberate sabatoge of someone's PC in order to accomplish this goes way too far.

I just read the rest where it says it's not stated on out the outside of the package. And you can't return it once it's opened unless it's damaged. Well, if it won't play on any of my stuff, then it's damaged. :rotfl:

Yeah I put it on minidisk for my DH. Works fine and its on the computer too.

I really gotta know where you shop and find new release CD's for $10?

I have a family of 6 - currently we have 2 MP3 players in the house and thank goodness my 2 oldest have similar tastes in music otherwise I would go broke.....this just kills me - then because they won't be making $$$ on sales of the CD - the concert prices will go up (not that they are cheap to begin with) and because the concert venues won't be sold-out then the sales of CD's will continue to rise and the cost of hearing music at any level (recorded or live) will get out of hand - I have about had it with an industry that asks for fans to spend money on a CD only to tell you what and how you can listen to it and then asks that you get the same song that you have just shelled out money for to spend money again to get it on MP3 format - Can I go back to having tapes that we recorded off the radio????

off my soapbox!!

most new release CD's at Target (the Tuesday they come out) are on sale for 9.98 - 11.98 on average for that week.

I can't remember the last time I spent more then that on a CD...

FTR, i have that cd and it works fine in my car and my computer cd players. i also ripped it and have it on my ipod -- no problems here.

True. Even less if you belong to BMG and get CD's through them. My average is 7.50.

Just talked to my DH and he does have it (he really needs to tell me when he buys CDs) and he disabled the thing, so it works on everything fine. I don't get the point of this though, if it still works and people can disable it.

Most likely if it can be disabled and the CD will still work, this is just a ploy by the company. "Hey, maybe if we try this..." kind of thing. It might stop a few people, but at what cost of ill will.

Well if you click on the link at the bottom of post it takes you to the original posters site. Its clear that this is Virgin India doing it so this may only apply to cd's in India.
