to plug in our outdoor christmas tree lights. On the box, it reads "Plug only into a GFCI protected receptacle. Receptacle should be mounted in an approved 'weatherproof while in use' type outlet box" and "Rated 125 volts".

Can anyone tell me what these two comments mean?

Jodi,

GFCI-ground fault circuit interruptor means that if it shorts from water or any other reason, it will turn itself off.

A weather proof type outlet box is just what it sounds like-for outdoor use and protected by design from the weather.

Rated 125 volts is talking about the electrical load the thing can carry.

Is that clear as mud?;)

Usually if you have a metal type box with outlets in it (it has a cover on it) outside on the side of your house - that is what they are talking about. Somehow you should be able to check and see if it matches the description. Generally that is what it is. And yes, you can plug Christmas tree lights into them - I have a yard stake plugged into an extension cord that has another extension cord plugged into it and another set of lights (I have cords all over truthfully).
