I just got the COOLEST assignment--Melissa Etheridge!!

I normally write about rock, hard rock, metal, nu-metal, and new alt bands. Fom Bo Bice to KoЯn and about anything in between.

It can be pretty hard to find a different angle when writing about these bands, most of the time it's pretty much the same story in a different tattoo. Don't get me wrong, some of the guys I've interviewed have been intelligent, articulate, and very interesting. But it's hard to get much depth there most of the time.

I just picked up a really awesome assignment, to interview and write a feature about Melissa Etheridge! I'm so looking forward to it--it's a story that actually has so much of a story behind it--her battle with breast cancer, how motherhood has affected her career and creativity, being a woman in the music industry, there's just so much there! I'm just totally pysched!

i've always wondered how someone in her position (such a very public life) handles issues of self esteem and trust in raising their children. i have to imagine that it's difficult for kids to deal with figuring out who likes them based on themselves vs. who their mom is. i also imagine it's hard to walk that line of opening yourself up (personaly) to 'friends', 'professionals' (teachers, medical professionals...) when there's always the concern that a confidence may become public information in the news or tabloids. how to raise kids that feel good about themselves and what they personaly have to offer, and not to be overly paranoid must be very challenging.

i honestly cannot fathom having to disclose things to my children before i thought they were emotionaly ready because i was afaid a tabloid (or someone reading one) would disclose it first-it's a hugely high cost for 'fame'.

I write for several publications. I'm on staff with a local music "rag" and I write freelance for another local magazine and four national rock music magazines plus two overseas magazines.
