I haven't had a paying job in 12 years! I took the test on a whim, and forgot all about it. A guy called me on my cell phone today and said he was with the U.S. Census and I thought they were calling to find out why I hadn't sent mine in yet!:lmao: After getting my mind clear, we interviewed over the phone and he set me up with paid training at the end of April. I should be able to expect work for 2-3 months. My DH will have to get one DS to school for the training days, then we will have to see what hours I am needed to work-door to door. I am imagining they won't need me to work door to door before 9, so school shouldn't interfere.

This will pay for our WDW trip in August and then some!:woohoo:

Wohoo for Disney money!

I stopped and talked to a couple of Census guys recruiting at Walgreens a few weeks ago (they had only hired 65% of the number of people they needed!) Just as an FYI, they said much of your work will be on weeknights and weekends as you need to visit people's home when they will actually be home.

Have a great day!

Is it to go door to door to make sure you filled out your census? Good for you..extra money is always a good thing.

Hours were sun-up to sun-down the last time I did this (hehe 10 years ago). I got a lot of great hours in and made tons of money doing it.

Just so you know if you get a house where you do not feel comfortable going to we were able to use information from neighbors last time and if all else failed you just notified a supervisor and they took care of it. During my whole time I only left one house after realizing that the gentleman was delusional and I would not get any information from him since the gov't was evil, evil, evil!!;)

Yes, it's door to door, so I appreciate your advice!

I just got called today as well, no idea what to expect as the guy on the phone was not the sharpest.. :)

He said I will be a crew leader and training starts April 12, but then didn't know when it would start, how flexible the hours/days are or pretty much anything else about the job.. explained to him that there are 2 weeks in June I can't work as we will be in Disney, but that didn't stop him from signing me up...

We shall see...

I took the test a couple weeks ago and haven't heard back. I just had my hours cut at our school system so I'm branching out to make my Disney money. (I swear it's like a drug addiction!) I've only ever worked for the schools since my degree is in education. I'm nervous they will call (since it's out of my comfort zone) but I'm also nervous they won't call!

I also recieved a call to be a crew lead. My training begins April 12. I am looking forward ot the opportunity.

Congratulations!

I'll save you the trip to my house. I still maintain that my race is Other - Human. ;)

Enjoy it! :)

Congratulations! DH & I just finished our training today. We are doing Group Quarters enumeration -- nursing homes, dormitories, etc.

Our real adventure will be Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday next week. We have Service Based Enumeration -- Food Kitchens, Shelters, and Outdoor Living areas. On Tuesday, we start working at midnight and work until 7:00 AM. We work in groups with at least one male in each group. We go to areas that have been identified as having people living outdoors -- in the woods, under bridges, etc. These people need to be counted, but it should be interesting.

Wow! That would be a bit scary but really interesting!!!

I hope I get a call soon!! I took the test months ago, but nothing yet. Maybe I'll give the local office a call.

Congrats! I have a friend who got called by the census to work for them, it's a great paying temp job! :thumbsup2

I told my guy that I was nervous about certain areas of town and he told me they would provide a bullet proof vest! He was kidding, really funny guy. But seriously I would have to turn down the kind of stuff you are describing from midnight til 7:00. Not so much the hours, but I would be scared to death to creep around under bridges and in the woods.

One of the questions on the application was regarding transportation available to the applicant. "Do you have access to: car, boat, plane, 4X4? They are serious about counting everybody-no doubt about it.

Hey, if I'm lucky, maybe I will get Paula Deen's house if she hasn't sent hers in. She lives about 3 miles from me! Or Sandra Bullock or John Mellancamp, they have beach houses about 15 miles from me! Wouldn't that be something?:thumbsup2

Yes, I am a little nervous about the night thing, but I really don't fear people just because they are homeless. There is so much of that today; even families with children that are living in tents because they have no other place to live -- it's just sad. I am thankful that we will be in groups. I thought that somebody here on the DIS board said that they were a Crew Leader for this phase. Here is some information that I found on this phase of the Census. It's only 1 night.

I'm sure it's going to be an eye opening experience for you, no matter how much you already know about homelessness.

I wouldn't necessarily be afraid of the unfortunate homeless, just the creeps that are up to no good out there in the dark.
