I have been a bit naughty and upgraded our London trip for my 40th!

I had already booked the Holiday Inn Bloomsbury but was just trawling the net this morning to see if there were any better options as I don't know London well at all.

Well..... I saw this and couldn't resist and have booked it at £240 for one night

It's the Marriott County Hall Hotel by the River near Westminster Bridge. Superior room with 2 Queen Beds and RIVER VIEW!!

I am a sucker for a view, and thought I would rather travel down on the day of the Lion King and just stay one night in what sounds a fabulous location than two nights in a Holiday Inn. I'm sure it will be worth the long journey down and the early morning start, don't you?

If anyone has seen or stayed in this hotel, I would love to hear all about it!

It's a nice location on the South Bank, next door to the London Eye. From your River View room you should be able to see (and hear) Big Ben. Although I've not stayed at the hotel I have been to a few work functions there, and it seems very nice. Perhaps you could book a 'flight' on the London Eye as well as your Lion King show.

Within walking distance you have the Houses of Parliament, South Bank complex, London Aquarium and Waterloo Station (which is only three hours from Disneyland Paris!). On the opposite side of the river is the office I used to work in, so please wave hello to my former colleagues! There are a couple of cafes and coffee shops just around the corner from the Marriott, including Fish!, Yo Sushi, a noodle house and a Starbucks.

I've been there many, many times.

It's COUNTY HALL - the old GLC HQ before they closed it - I spent many happy union meetings there!

I was going to book the London Eye so Phil had to tell me that he had already booked it as my SURPRISE!!! LOL!!!! We just can't keep surprises secret in this household for some reason! Hope we have a clear day and a good view

Rob - please don't tell me it is only 3 hours from Disneyland Paris - I will be getting ideas! There was actually a more expensive room than ours with a balcony and view of Big Ben but that was beyond reach financially - I think it was £400 something like that - but hopefully the view will be great.

Bonzo - how long ago was that when you went there for your union meetings? Just wondering when the building was converted into a hotel.

That sounds great Mazzy. The London Aquarium is in County Hall as is a Travel Inn but it certainly won't be as luxurious as the Marriott. I'd be interested to see if any of the Travel Inn rooms had views of the river. I doubt it for £70 a night.

Dimplenose - yes the aquarium is in the same building, but I'm trying not to think about it as I have a Fish Phobia!

Tracy - I looked into booking the Travel Inn but it was booked up for that night, though I wouldn't imagine you would give a river view for that price would you? Unless anyone know's different?

I have just realised that if I register with MarriottRewards I can get 1 airmiles for every £2 spent, so thats a grand total of 120 miles on our stay, so that's brilliant news for an avid airmiles collector like me, and makes me feel I'm getting a better deal.
