My 'boys' are heading to the mountains for hunting [I think it is archery?]. I'm on my own for dinner and thought a burger would taste good. I called the local diner and order a burger/medium w/lettuce, tomatoe, & onion - mayo on the side --- NO ROLL. [it comes with either FF or onion rings]. I tell them NO FF or onion rings BUT then ask "What are your veggies today". Today their veggies are Corn, Stewed Tomatoes, and Macaroni and Cheese.:faint:

Ummmm -- since WHEN is Mac & Cheese a VEGGIE? You'd be surprised what alot of PA Dutch People think are 'veggies'.
:crazy2:

needles to say -- I'll be enjoying my burger WITHOUT their 'veggies'.;)

Mmm, your burger sounds good!! Enjoy it!

I don't think I have ever heard of Mac and cheese as a veggie though!!:p

That sounds great, Jody. :)

I stopped by Sonic and got a double cheeseburger today, hold the bun. Who would have ever thought we could eat this way and lose weight? ::yes::

:rotfl: Jody, are you sure you aren't in TN? :scratchin I can think of several places here that would count mac n cheese as a veggie. ;)

Enjoy that burger! That sounds really good on this cold evening! Yummm

You'll find Mac and Cheese listed as a veggie lots of places in Texas, too!!!

Kathy,
Maybe there's something in that blue box and orange powder we don't know about! :scratchin :rotfl:

I just found this thread. Too funny, Jody. I'm Pa. Dutch myself. My father was born and raised in "Lepnon Caunty" ;) . To some of you that is Lebanon County, Pa.

I have made a few "rules of cooking" according to the Pa. Dutch. These are just my impressions from growing up eating and cooking Pa. Dutch food. Feel free to add to the list if you want. I know some of you Dutchies out there.....and I know you could add some of your own....so here goes......

Rule #1. When in doubt, add another starch.

Rule #2. When in doubt, add a hard boiled egg.

Rule #3. When in doubt, put it between two pie crusts and call it dinner. :teeth:

Rule #4. Can there be too many sweet and sours at a meal?

Rule #5. Mac N Cheese IS a veggie. (This one's for you, Jody:D )

Comments:

*Chow-Chow is NOT something you feed your dog.
*If you've never had a Whoopie pie, you haven't lived.:teeth:

Oh, and BTW, I absolutely LOVE Dutch food (except for cup cheese, never could stand that one). That is probably why I look the way I do and why I'm a carb addict. :teeth:

:D Thanks for my Sunday morning smile Pam!

Don't forget --- Shoo Fly Pie!

As far as my DH was raised --- if it doesn't have meat AND potatoes it isn't a REAL meal! A standard meal that my MIL would cook would include meat, gravy, mashed potatoes, brown buttered noodles, lima beans or peas, AND corn. This is NOT a special occasion meal --- this is standard cooking. She is also well known for making potatoes w/Lasagna [as a side dish].
:teeth:

And guess where we go every Sunday evening for dinner [including tonite]! I have a HARD time eating at MIL's on sundays and not blowing it.

Well, I'm not Dutch, but I think my Grandpa was heavily influenced by them when he was young. He used to make my Grandmother crazy because he always said that if the meal didn't include potatoes, you didn't have to say grace first!

You beat me to it. I was going to say the same thing! It's amazing how many restaurants list Mac and Cheese as veggies here :p

Mac and cheese is definitely a veggie in the Philly area and South Jersey - especially when there are stewed tomatoes to put on top.

I'm so laughing here, Jody. Mac and cheese is a veggie? Only in Pennsylvania Dutch country ;)

Gravy *IS* a beverage, not just something you use a little of on your mashed potatos. Dh grew up in Lancaster County PA and the first time I visited I was shocked at what these people will put gravy on!

Dh says to add that Scrapple is a must at every meal. He's not even sure what's in it just that it is flavorless and starchy. LOL
:yo-yo:

Oh, Jody, How do you do it? Potatoes are my biggest temptation and you have to face that every Sunday?? I will send out extra prayers for you on Sundays, OK?:D :D And you're right. Potatoes with everything. Oh, that made me think of one more rule:

Rule #6. When you cook vegetables, always do something to them such as, CREAMED corn or BAKED corn (in custard) , green bean CASSEROLE, CANDIED carrots, etc. :teeth:

Carol- Too funny....my dad would have said that if the meal wouldn't have had meat.

Disney_1derland - That's true about the gravy. And I could join right in. :D And scrapple.......well I'm not sure you want to know what is in there....I like it, but .....

Don't hold back! I've never seen it let alone eaten it but dh has talked bad about it for years so now that I have the chance, you must tell us what is in it!

but dh says that sounds about right and that's what he always thought it was but could never be certain. All I can say is EWWW! :crazy2:

Who'd have thought they'd put a recipe like that on the internet. Thanks for solving the mystery. I'll beware any Scrapple I come across!

:faint:

I'm going to 'Heritage Days' in Perry County this weekend and they make that stuff [scrapple] by the BIG Kettles full! UGH! My dad use to like it and he always had pancake syrup on it. Til this day I think of scrapple whenever I smell pancakes. YUK!

Another PA Dutch YUK that I remember from childhood is 'Puddins' --- anyone remember that one?

Well, after reading the first recipe for Scrapple, I think that I'll be eating much for lunch today. That isn't such a bad thing though. I just can't imagine eating that.
