When you buy points insurance in case of trip cancellation, you get paid $5 per point for every point that had to be cancelled.
But do you still own those points or are they somehow confiscated by the insurance company?
If you still own them, you can use them again or rent them.
If you got $5 per point for the cancelled points from the insurance company, and $10 per pont for rental, that would be $15 per point every time you had to cancel a trip.

Am I missing soemthing here?

I don't think it works quite that way.

Think about the purpose of insurance...what loss did you incur if you got to keep your points...I think this is if you need to cancel within 24 hours of your arrival, or during the trip itself.

If the points went to holding I think you could make an argument that you have some damages/impairment, but no outright loss. It is a good question though...I'd be curious to know the "real" answer myself, since I have purchased the insurance before and don't remember reading anything about it.

Is the insurance company owned by DVC? If it is, DVC would just take the points back, I guess.

Since DVC advises potential purchasers that membership is not an investment, but an opportunity to have quality vacations, the loss could be argued to be the loss of that particular quality vacation opportunity.

I think that argument wouldn't work, of course. But, as you say, there isn't anything about it in the insurance info.

The insurance isn't from DVC, it's through Travelguard.

It really doesn't explain on the flyer but there is a line that reads "premiums for this plan must be paid before the reservation cancellation penalty period begins". I assume that means before 30 days.

I doubt they would let you keep the points if they pay you, even in a holding situation. They may have a deal with DVC where DVC rents the points out and reimburses the insurance company.
