I have an adoption question

I'm finding it highly amusing that people are trying to tell me I didn't have a SS number until I was older.

:rotfl: :lmao: :rotfl: :lmao:

Must be missing that. All I see are people commenting on your statment that people without SS cards issued at birth were the exception not the rule.

Where I lived and grew up, they would have been the exception without a SS #. ;)

Can you just tell your dad you're having trouble with your social security info and ask if he knows anything about the Ohio business? Make it all about trying to clear up a snafu, not about finding out if you were adopted.
::yes:: ::yes:: This is what I was thinking.

the big push on minors getting social security cards did'nt come about until the late 80's when the irs began requring each dependant have theirs listed on any return they were being claimed on (began i believe in 1987).

::yes:: Thanks, I was just about to post that. It was 1987 and I remember it well, because I was a CPA doing tax returns at the time, and most of our clients were P.O.'d that they suddenly had to get social security numbers for their kids in order to claim them as dependants, when they never had to before. :rotfl:

My brother and I didn't get them until we were 14 or 15, and needed them to apply for our first part-time jobs.

We adopted our 2 foster children in July.

The BC's arrived and I was surprised...they back date them to the original date of birth and add our information.

It was neat, like I just gave birth to a 4 and 6 year old!

Congrats on the new additions! :yay:

In NY any changes to a BC are noted as an amended BC in the corner,so a new BC has amended on it.

Same.. DS was adopted by my husband and his Birth Certificate says my name as Mom and DHs as Dad.. Everything else stayed the same.. Date, Time, Place, etc etc

Matter of fact, we were ALL surprised that no where on his BC does it say anything about his Bio Dad or anything about being reissued or revised

This was in 2002, we did Step Parent adoption a year after we were married.. My ex hubby, DS's bio dad, had to sign away all rights..

There is a paper trail if you look hard enough.

Pretty much the same situation here too. I still have DS's original BC as well as his "new" one (it's actually several years old).

They are identical except that my DH's name is in the spot where bio's was. Nothing to indicate that bio ever had anything to do with DS's birth (except for the fact that I still have the original).

I love all this talk of adoption. DD2's adoption shall be finalized in January. :cloud9:

Anyway, DH's BC, like the majority here, lists the exact time, date, place, etc. just with his adoptive parents' names.

OUCH! ;) and congratulations! :)

That would be hilarious if that's what people were saying, but I didn't see posts that said that.

Used to be a parent could get the SS card anytime after a baby was born, but many waited until the needed it. When my daughter was born in 1987 they were just starting to require the cards right after birth. I think we had to apply for hers the traditional way, but for her younger brothers the application was done in the hospital.

I'm not sure what date DH's certificate was "filed" with the county, but his info lists his adoptive parents. His original certificate is sealed, and we would have to petition the court (and pay a fee) to have it opened and released to us.

That depends on which state you were born in. I was born in MD (and adopted in MD) but my original certificate is sealed and won't be opened even if I petitioned the court and had my birthmother give her consent.

No, it looks exactly the same. The adoptive parents names are listed where the birth parents names would have been. There is no indication that there has been a revision at all.

That is the way my birth certificate looks like too; no indication of adoption or anything. Can't remember about a filing date but that might be different.

My parents (adoptive) told me about being adopted a long time ago - when I was still a kid. After I got married and wanted to know medical stuff I did research and found my birthmom in 1997. But she was adopted too, so the only medical stuff she could provide to me was about her; birthdad's family gave me (through birthmom) a complete geneology of their family and medical stuff. Bmom and I became close friends until she passed away in 2003.
