A computer virus. And it's causing my AVG to basically freak out. It keeps coming up in resident shield as trojan horse backdoor.generic11.ZNE and says it's a file in my windows system 32, but when I go to the computer files, that file doesn't even exist, so I can't delete it. AVG can't seem to get rid of it, it keeps coming up multiple times though. I've checked on Google, but there isn't much about it on google, and I've tried getting rid of it the couple ways that were described on Google, but it didn't seem to work.

My laptop is only 2 years old and up until last night, worked great. So what do I do?

What you'll probably have to do is boot the laptop from a CD, drop to the command shell ("Start", "run", "cmd"), navigate over to your system32 folder on your C drive and look for and delete any of the suspect dlls whose names match the descriptions in the link above and have creation dates from about the time problems started.

After that, use tools like your normal AV software and/or Spybot Search & Destroy to clean the rest up.

I've gotten a couple of rather nasty "drive-by downloaded" trojans in the last year and that's how I had to beat them into submission.

This may sound silly, but how do I boot the laptop from a CD? And I've looked in the C drive already, but that file doesn't seem to exist. Will it appear if I start from a CD?

Go to www.techsupportforum.com --> Virus/Trojan/Spyware Help. Follow the instructions in the sticky and post your problem. These people are lifesavers. They have gotten rid of a couple viruses for me in the past.

I am going to make my way over there, although the stuff on that site looks scary. Guess I'll just do whatever they say even though none of it makes sense.

Most Windows machines are defaulted to try and boot from the CD/DVD drive before the hard drive. If you slap a bootable CD in the drive when you power it up, it probably will try and use it. If not, sometimes there'll be a message on the power-up BIOS page that say something like "F12=Boot menu". If that's the case, press F12 and you will be presented with a list of possible boot options.

If you don't have a bootable CD, I've used "BartPE" (just Google it).

As for not able able to see the files in questions, I'm assuming that in File Explorer you have changed the option so you can see hidden files/folders.
