I am working on a Summer 2003 vacation to Hawaii. MS has a 24 hour hold for me on the Maui Schooner. Anyone ever stay here????? All the other will require wait list.

It depends on what you want. I saw there were a number of 1 BR units there for June and July of 2003 and a couple of 2 BR units but I think the 2 BR units are gone, hope you have one reserved. While I would stay at the Schooner, it is in no way comparable to DVC. I would not exchange my DVC for it. It is rated less than an 8 and is borderline 5*. It's a nice and small resort a little ways off the ocean. I believe there is a beach but no a swimming beach. It is on the quieter side of the island far away from the traditional action.

If it suits your needs, especially if you're hoping to use FF miles, you may want to consider it. Otherwise, I suspect something else better will turn up.

Thanks Dean,

I think I will just go on the wait list for another resort. I am really hoping for a resort on Kauai. I did find a website for the schooner. Seems like the closest swimming beach is a mile away. I am hoping for one that is within walking distance.

I'd look heavily for a direct exchange. Kauai is so much easier to get than Maui, especially through II and DVC. The easiest resort to exchange to that's on the DVC list AND acceptable is the Kona Coast on the Island of HI. I would talk to San Francisco Exchange about the Embassy for Kaui, Pahio Shearwater, Hanalei Bay, Marriott and maybe the Intrawest property. I'd also consider Makai Club cottages, Lawaii Beach, Pahio at Bali Hai and the Pahio at Ka'Eo Kai. The later would be questionable exchanges using DVC because they're a trade down but still nice places to stay.

For Maui, I'd list the Whaler, Westin, Embassy, Marriott, One Napili and Sands of Kahana for the Lahiana area and for the South side, Maui Lea at Maui Hill. The trouble is that though many of these and a few others are pretty good properties, most if not all, are a trade down from DVC.

You might want to hit up a direct trade with an RCI member as it's many times easier to get a trade on demand with RCI than II. Also a RCI member can put a unit on hold and then ask if it's ok rather than being committed like with II.

Dean,

I was meaning to ask you, does the Westin have vacation villa's on Maui? The Westin hotel we were going to stay at was in Ka'anapali. It has all single rooms I believe... Were are the Westin units you're talking about?

It's a project started by the same developer that developed the Kaanapali area. It was termed the Kaanapali Ocean Resort and given the II code KAA (I think). It fell through and was sold out to Starwood. Starwood is now the parent company of Sheraton, Vistana, Westin, St. Regis. I don't think it's right in Kaanapali nor at the site of the Westin Hotel. When we lived in HI, we always stayed at the Maui Surf which is now the Westin and I don't believe there's any room there. I believe the timeshare will be on the edge of Kaanapali but am not certain exactly where. I'm sure it will be a premier property when it is available. I know it's being developed actively as I just had someone interested in a direct exchange with my HH unit for their Westin.
