I have a great neighbor... and I think he's angry with me.

I have a really great neighbor living next to me.

Well, for two weeks we have talked about going to his friend's farm and getting a nice big load of fertilizer for my garden. So, today at 4:15 PM he shows up at my door. His truck is in my driveway..... filled with fertilizer. A totally nice gesture, for sure.

Problem is, I was on my way to pick up my kids and meet my wife for dinner and a movie. So, I told him I couldn't deal with it right now.

He looked VERY upset, and told me just to open my back gate. So, I did, and he put it all in my garden whike we were out. But I think he was upset. I hope not, but I don't think I was wrong.

Sounds like a good time to go over with a really good bottle of wine and maybe some movie gift cards or something.

Maybe if you tell him thank you for the fertilizer and sorry about not being available to help him unload it with a gift in hand, all will be well.

Yes, a totally nice gesture for sure! Perhaps at a later time you could invite this *great guy* over for some barbecue and thank him for his thoughtfulness. Shame he didn't think to check with you before just showing up. Really created an awkward and unfortunate situation for both of you. Yeah, some of your world class barbecue should smoothe things out just fine.

It was rather presumptious of him though to just show up with all that right around the dinner hour and expect you to be ready and willing to unload it. What would he have done if you had already left..probably the same thing he did.

I am with you. I had a not quite similar thing happen to me the other day. Our neighbors (who don't live in the house) come to check on the house every week or so. They are an elderly couple and REALLY nice. Well, for the first time, they came to check on the house during the week. I work from home and happened to have my windows open that day. I was on the phone, running a conference call, when I heard the doorbell. I had people from all over the country and India, I could not stop to chat with my neighbor. It was obvious he knew I was there and that I heard. My open window is literally 5 feet from the front door. He rang a few times, knocked, and then started to call my name. I had to put the entire call on hold. Turns out he wanted to borrow a pair of pliers. Well, I could not drop this call to get them from the garage so I told him that I did not have any. I was sort of short with him and I felt pretty badly about it.

Today, he came by when I was in the back yard. He forgot (or pretended to) that it ever happened. Seems there are no hard feelings.

I think he had a very big expectation of your reaction being a grateful and very happy one to see him there with this surprise. And woola, he was very let down and disappointed. Hence, his apparent anger. I agree, a huge thank you of some sort is in order and let him know how much you appreciate his kindness.

I've had this kinda thing happen before. Personally, I woulda done anything possible to stay and unload my own fertilizer. I would figure my neighbor went out of his way to help me so the least I could do is call the wife to pick up the kids and see a movie NEXT Friday night.
