i hate

That's not necessity - it's convenience. Our parents and their parents and their parents survived their teenage years without a cell phone. We could do it, too.

My friend who's sixteen, and her sister who's eighteen still don't have cell phones (I'll admit - it's annoying sometimes because I don't know how to reach them) and they live. There family only has one cell phone, and it's a work phone.
Actually, they are somewhat of a nesscity when out. Payphones are hard to find nowadays and sometimes emergencies happen when a phone is not nearby. Cars breakdown on empty roads all the time.

Air is a necessity. Water is a necessity. Food is a necessity.

A phone is a convenience. A car is a convenience. A computer is a convenience.

Yes, it makes our lives easier, but it is not necessary for survival.

When I say "necessity" I don't mean we can't live without it. I mean that there are times that we need those things, making them a "necessity" at that moment.

When I was 10, I like American Girl Dolls, Bratz, coloring and my gameboy.
Kids are growing up waaay too fast.

It's still not necessary. It would be handy, but it isn't required in the situation.

Yeah, I hate it when you see little kids get cell phones or iPods and stuff when they're 6 or so. I know a little boy who has his own iPod and he's 6! And I didn't go through all the songs or anything, but some of them had bad words on them and stuff... I don't even know if his parents are watching what he buys, which they should be the ones buying it for him. I have no clue how that works out.
Yeah, when I was 7 I had my Gameboy Color and would play Pokemon. That was my big thing. My brother got jealous and got one when he was like 5 though- he would come up to me every couple minutes and make me pass the levels for him.
I got my first phone when I was 12 or so- emergencies only.
Uhhh the only thing I really hate is when kids are spoiled and they are little brats and their parents don't even try to stop them from being that way.

A while back there were these two girls hanging out at my work, about 9-10 years old. Before I saw them close up, honestly, I assumed they were much older. They were dressed and acting like old, old teenagers... their posture, their expressions, everything about screamed 'world weary seventeen-year-old.' And all intentionally, obviously. I found out later that they got kicked off the computers for looking at porn sites. Very sad. :[

That reminds me of one of my friends from elementary school. We were in 6th grade and she was trying to act all grown up. She wore mini skirts and very low cut shirts. She was bragging to everyone about how she had a boyfriend. I bet she's going to be, if not already, one of those pregnant teens. :sad2:

i hate...i hate...i hate...hmmm...i dont really hate anything. life's too much fun to waste it on hateing something.

Sometimes, cell phones are necessary. I'm getting a cell phone sometime this year and I'm 14-going-on-15. I do sort of need one because I go out and usually have to borrow a friend's phone if we're done ealier or going to be later.

Little kids shouldn't have one though. They should be with an adult or something who should have a phone themselves. When I was ten, I was playing dolls and Neopets. Not texting

Totally, little kids DONT need one- they barely EVER go anywhere without their parents and when they ARE somewhere without a parent there are adults there! So why does a 10 year old need a cell phone? The only good answer to that is if both parents work and they need to get home from the bus stop safely and stay safe at the home (but there most likely IS a house phone at their home...)

It is a necessity these days. Kids go out with only their friends, come home alone from the bus, etc.

When I was 12, I had to come home alone off the bus, and stay home til my parents got off work. One day, I couldn't get my key to work and I had no way of contacting my parents. The neighbors were not home, and I had no access to a phone. I had to sit outside for 2 hours til my parents got home.

Sure, our parents survived without them, but that was a different time. Kids need cells now for emergencies, yes, need.

i agree and disagree- you NEED them in some cases: walking home from the bus alone, going out, ect. But KIDS DONT need cell phones- when i was in elementary school one of my older family members would ALWAYS be waiting for me when i got off the bus. I was never alone either i would walk home with others- kidnappers dont 'nap' kids who are in big groups. When your older- thats different, you go out with friends, no adults...

I think kids can live without cell phones, teens and ^ most of the time need them- truth is EVERYONE can live without a cellphone- its not like air or food or water- you NEED those things, you would die without them. But stuff like electronics are stuff that you dont need. Your not going to die because you didnt have your iPod... but cell phones are different in that case- you COULD get kidnapped and you could get killed by that because you couldnt secretly call anyone, but the chances for that are not as high in some places as in others. different people think different things about what a necessities

Necessity - that which is indispensably requisite to an end desired

They don't need to call their parents using a cell phone. I know many families that function just fine without having cell phones.

Who gets their cell phone taken away if they're in trouble? Would your parents tell you you couldn't eat or drink if you failed a test?

I leave my cell phone home all of the time, and it is no problem. Sure, sometimes I wish I had it with me so I could call mom and dad and ask where they are or tell them where I am, but it is not necessary.

Thank you so much, but I already know what a necessity is. It's semantics, a cell is not the same as water, but it is a necessity in emergencies.

Kids these days, when they're out doing who knows what with just their friends, need a portable way to contact their parents if they get in trouble.

I'm not talking about 6 year olds here, since kids that young are never without a guardian. I'm saying 10/11+ need cell phones for emergencies.

My cousins friend has a cell phone. SHE IS IN 3RD GRADE!!!!!! parents need tot think a little. that age is WAY to young

I hate kids that have no respect for people older than them.

I think the HAVING a cell thing is debateable depending on the situation. If the parents are on the go a lot, then yes I can see how it would be helpful for a busy family.
My brother got his first cell at 18, almost 19. I got mine this year, at almost 16. Thing is, we never needed our own phone. Even when my brother was out late working shows for the AV company he worked for, it just wasn't necessary. He was a busy person, but my parents weren't. So we just had one cell for all of us, and he'd call on it and my parents were usually home. Anytime where my parents needed the cell and we had to go out, we'd borrow a friends cell or use a payphone.
My parents were never busy people, so we never needed more than one phone. We only have two for the three of us, my parents share a phone. I dont' count my brother, he doesn't live at home anymore, and his cellphone is his ONLY phone.

I'm just saying, if the family is busy, the kids could really use one. I get why parents are uncomfortable letting their kids out without a means of communication. My parents won't let me go downtown without mine. It's just, when a kid isn't even in junior high, why on earth would they need texting, or web capabilities?

You're quite welcome. ;)

However, I must disagree. If a 10/11 year old child needs a cell phone, then I question the parents' ability to keep track of their children and the situations that require the child to be without adult supervision.

Now, I think we've beaten this topic into the ground.
