I am originally from the west coast- can handle earth quakes and volcanoes.....these tornadoes are TERRIBLE here! Just spent the last hour in the basement. We have lots of damage in Central Illinois- so far no reports of injuries but lots of trees and power lines down and several buildings ruined. Irony though- the Lowes Home Center was damaged- at least they should have supplies to fix it! Another wave of bad weather is due in an hour or so......so far so good here. We live in the woods and NO trees down YET and no other damage that I can find! Will I EVER get used to these?

Nope you won't ever get used to them. I live in Mississippi and we have severe weather all the time. The thing is we live so close to the Mississippi River that we can't have cellars.....sooooooooo when it gets bad we all get in the bathroom and pray. I've lived here 31 years and everytime I see the watches and warnings start going off it terrifies me.

A good websight is www.noaa.com it has radars and National Warnings the second they are issued.

Stay safe!

You might, but I haven't. And I haven't had to actually *experience* one. We've had some come close to us, but they've always missed us.

 A big hello from tornado alley. People around here go out on their front porch and watch when there is a tornado warning.
These people are clearly "used to it". Although they can be deadly, I think I'll take a tornado over an earthquake. At least in a tornado you can take shelter.

We had sirens going off by us today. Heard reports (rumors??) of one touching down on the other side of town and heading out west of us -- right over the path of our home. DS8 is terrified. This is the 3rd time we've taken shelter over the last 2 months.

Interesting that people actually watch the skies during one. I got into a disagreement with a good friend today over this exact issue. While we were taking cover, she was heading out to the library with her kids as the sirens were going off. Her thought....they have a basement at the library. I was upset by her casual attitude towards something which can be very vicious. In fact, it's made me rethink a lot of things I've seen her do.

We had a tornado just a couple miles from me a little earlier. I try not to get to worried, since I've been here in Indy most of my life and have never seen one. But, I gotta make sure my kids are safe. As I watch out the door. I love to watch storms. lol

some of these storms just ripped through here...there was a warning and a confirmed touchdown in the speedway area. we live a bit north of that area. our skies were VERY dark. it was only 7pm and it looked as if it was 2am! it was yucky!!!! i guess there's another batch coming through here later this evening. crossing my fingers that there's no more tornadoes...

i've lived in the midwest for most of my life and i've never come into direct contact with a tornado...but we've had some close calls. i'll never get used to them...i'm better now than i was a few years ago. i'm always with my DH and he always manages to calm me down somehow...i used to make myself physically sick because i HATE this weather...

glad you're ok laurie...i was thinking of you and you were the reason that i logged on!! i knew that you were close to that area...

LOL, too close and my daughter was at work in the direct path of it. I sort of freaked a bit, but it just touched down and went away.

Last time a storm went through there was a power outage and a malfunction with the warning system. 600,000 gallons of water from the fish tanks was on the floor of the pet store.

btw, thanks for worrying about me. :)

It's BACK tonite! I really shouldn't be on the computer, but we have been under either a tornado or thunderstorm warning for the last THREE hours....we have had 5-7 inches of rain, are expecting another 5 inches in the next 5-6 hours, and EVERYTHING in town is flooded. Thank goodness we are out of town and halfway up the hill- our yard is very, very wet with some standing water, but so far the basement is dry. We are one of the lucky ones still with power. The interstate has a bad semi accident and the roads are all backed up with flooded roads. We were going to see POTC tonight- glad we stayed home. Looks like it will be this way for several more hours...

.....on a happier note- we leave Friday night for WDW!!!!! Doubt we will get the lawn mowed before we leave. Hope our housesitter doesn't mind mowing an extra time!

At least you have a basement! It must be rough - we've only had one really bad storm since we moved to Mississippi, but the week before we moved, the town was badly hit - over $1 million in damage, including the destruction of a school, parts of the college and the juvenile detention center. The storms in May hit the county above us badly. :( I didn't think we were moving this close to Tornado Alley!

And military housing generally has no basements, so we're in the bathroom praying too.

I see you're in Bloominton IL

I'm not from here, but I'm working here this week. Nice weather... gotta love those storms that knock out the power when you're in a hotel. If you leave your room you can't get back in with the electronic door locks!

We've had storms every day this week and another one is rolling in right now.

ByTheSea - the weather here is USUALLY not like this.....good weather station to listen to is WJBC (AM 1230).....I am from Seattle and the amount of rain we are getting tonight is RIDICULOUS. At least in Seattle we have topography (mountains, oceans, green trees year round) to go with our rain. All this is doing is flattening the corn and soybeans!

Hate to tell y'all, the alley moved north.

My family lived thru the OKC May 3rd 1999, we lost the entire house were i lived for the first 21 yrs of my life, and only a handful of photos remained..

since 1999-2000 season, we in oklahoma havent really had many tornadoes...only things were seeing are little ones that are easily spottable ( at least with our weathermen).were having them just not as many.

Good luck, keep safe and keep your eye on the sky, if its getting bigger, its not a good thing...
