We are trying to trade in a car we bought 2 years ago. We still owe quite a bit on the car. With the year and mileage it will probably be sold for pretty much what I owe. Therefore I know I will have to roll over a portion of the old loan.

Anyway-- the whole thing has been a hassle. I don't have the greatest credit. I had a bankruptcy in 1997. I run up a lot of stupid debt in college and had a child and couldn't pay it at all, along w/ a multitude of medical bills. So I filed. Since then I haven't had anything "bad" nor any credit cards. However, I've had 2 car loans since then and a mortgage. All with on time payments, ect.....

They still give me a hard time about this. I've rebuilt my credit (or so I thought), but once they see it on there from 7 years ago they treat me awful!! I made a mistake, I was young, I won't do it again!! So now they are looking at the numbers and will let me know tomorrow. I've gotten this each time I've bought a car, and I've had it. So, I guess I get to wait to find out anything.

That's too bad. As if new car shopping isn't a big enough pain. I dread buying vehicles. We are going to be shopping again this fall. Yuck! It's times like these I wish I was friends with a car dealer. Hang in there.

I'm not a real expert in credit ratings or "FICO" scores, but it's my understanding they go up very slowly once they've been down to the bankruptcy level.

I know Suze Orman talks about improving a "FICO" score frequently on her program ( I believe she has many books and a website) however if you continue to pay bills on time and have long standing credit cards with banks i'm sure your score is improving and hopefully will be at a level to help you in the future.

I hate that to, I cant negociate, just have the price and that be it.

I couldn't agree more about hating to shop for new cars. Especially when they always start with "How much can you afford to pay a month?" I HATE that. Its amazing how they always come back with a rate/price very close that amount. You could end up driving a Yugo for $400 a month because that's what you said you can afford.

I now get pre-approved through our Credit Union so that I can skip all the Dealer Finance Manager steps.

Good Luck!
