when we need something repaired or replaced. The repairmen think that because I'm a woman, they can dupe me into paying for extra fees.
We are getting free estimates to repair our sprinkler system. One of the companies that we called showed up today to give us a free estimate. The guy was friendly enough... He told me that he couldn't give me an accurate estimate because the pump needed to be primed and he had no way of knowing how many sprinkler heads we have, he could only give me a "ballpark" figure. He said that if I wanted an accurate estimate, he would have to prime the pump and I would be charged $65 for this alone (the estimate was free). It's true that the pump needed to be primed, I wasn't surprised to hear that. I asked him at which point would we know exactly how much the job would cost, he said once they checked out the pump. I guess he expected us to choose their company and then they would determine the cost. Sure and just fell off the turnip truck!
I asked him to explain to me how to prime the pump. He showed me and said to insert a garden hose (there is one next to the sprinkler pump) into a certain area of the pump and to keep doing it until the pump was able to pull water. $65 for that?
I needed to pick up my kids from school (he showed up later than he said he would) or I would have primed the pump myself. I told him to give me a general idea of what they would do and their prices. He gave me an estimate in writing. At this point, I just wanted to have a general idea on what we can expect to pay (this was the first estimate).
This afternoon, I decided to prime the pump myself and see how long it would take. Guess how long it took me to do this? A whole 2 minutes!!!!!
Let's just say that they won't be getting our business.
