I had to really lower myself, now what? UPDATE post 21

UPDATE: I just returned and am still kinda stoned so bear with me if I don't make perfect sense.

I didn't say a word when I walked in . The look on the receptionists face tells me he didn't bother to tell them I was coming. She handed me the clip board and said here, fill this out, I'll need your dental insurance card. I spoke not a word and went to fill it out. As I was doing that Dr Taylor walked in. I was very nice to him and reiterated my gratefulness for his willingness to help me out. Loud enough that the girls could hear he said after the way I was treated it was the least he could do. I finished the paperwork, silently handed it back to the receptionist (main instigator) and sat down again.

The assistant getting me ready spoke not a syllable to me except to say that Dr. Taylor would be in in a few minutes. I put on my Ipod and waited. I overheard him ask one of them twice to get an xray from me. I silently cooperated. He came back in the room with an assistant and told me I had quite an infection and that it would require root canal or possibly an extraction, my choice. I went with his advice of a root canal.

Don't ask me why, I can't explain it but although I have no problem assisting with gory dental procedures, I'm a terrified patient so he gave me a couple of sedatives and I relaxed for about 20 min with my Ipod while the assistant set up the procedure trays. I took a light snooze in the chair while he operated. A short while later DSis came and drove me home. As it turns out, the infection is advanced enough that it could have killed me (I am still receiving cancer treatment and any infection can be fatal) had I waited too much longer. I again thanked him profusely for doing this tremendous favor for me and booked my next appt in 2 weeks to have the crown put on. He's not charging me for the office visit or procedure, only the cost of the crown which the lab will bill him for and should be under $150 and I can pay him $10 a month.

As he walked me out to DSis's car he said I had been a good assistant and he was very sorry for what had happened. I said if certain people ever left his employ he could call me and I'd come back to work for him in a heartbeat. Considering the main instigator has been with him for 18 years now I doubt that will happen.

Anyway, I survived although I was very nervous through the whole thing and although I didn't adhere completely to the letter of mama's laws of manners, I didn't start anything or burn any bridges. Thanks for your support guys!

I am glad to hear it went well and that he saw you just in time.

You did great, much better then I would have done. I would have just had to open my mouth once. I have that foot in mouth disease! I'm glad things worked out for you. Feel better soon!

Glad to hear it went well but sorry that you had to have a root canal :scared: Good thing you caught it in time!!!

Hey, you took the high road and that was the best way to play it in this case. Those idiots probably feel a little crappy this evening.

I'm glad everything went well. Oh, if only I still lived in that area and knew which office it was ;) Anyway, I worked in a place like that.......the employees intimidated the employer. They got whatever they wanted. It made my life hell and even though I had been there longest, i took all I could and suddenly quit one day. Told my boss that when the "other" employee decided to quit, give me a call, but otherwise, i would never step foot in there again. Well, she did end up quitting about 4 months later and he called me back. Then, a few months later, during another employee vacation, he made the announcement that he needed to find someone to cover that week....and that he was thinking of calling the person that made my life living hell. I told him if he called her and she accepted, I was leaving and never coming back. Seemed I had a bit more pull than I thought. He never called her and we just managed with the missing person. However, advancing a few more years, the same thing happened again and that time I did quit for good. Just wasn't worth not being appreciated. It was a terrible cycle and new people learned the behavior quickly.

The best revenge is to live well.. Wear one of your nicest outfits, some nice jewelry, make sure your hair looks super, and breeze in there like you're on the top of the world.. Be polite of course - but you've already been given good advice on the "tone" of the politeness.. Under NO circumstances allow them to make you feel "small".. Hold your head high..

Then in private, express your extreme gratitude to this dentist.. There aren't many that would do this for someone in your situation.. He must be a real special guy.. :)

I am glad it went well for you. I really admire your restraint. I honestly do not think that I could have handled myself with the class that you exhibited. I hope you feel better soon.

Wow...glad to hear your infection was caught in time. I didn't realize how bad something like that could get. Yikes.

And another WOW at your dentist. Again, I never heard what happened originally, but I'm amazed that an Employer would be so much at the mercy of his Employees that he did whatever they dictated in regards to forcing him, the Employer to fire someone that he didn't want to let go. Amazing. They must have some dirt on him...somewhere...to have him jumping through their hoops.

The short version is that 1 of the girls had worked for him for over 17 years, since she was still in high school. The other had been with him for 5 years. In a small office of only 2 assistants, 1 receptionist and the dentist it's imperative that everyone get along well. Do you please your well trained and loyal employees or do you let go someone who's only been around a few weeks in order to preserve the office harmony? I do feel that being the boss he should insisted they give it more time. He felt the major problem was the person I was replacing. She was bubbly, outgoing and well loved by all. She even had them over for lunch on her days off. They called her Super Cindy. It's a legacy that no one could really live up to. I am friendly, though not highly outgoing and really not interested in spending more that the required 8 hours a day with my co-workers. I do honestly understand why he felt he had to go along but I think he should have told them they'd talk again in a couple more months. Anyway, water under the bridge now huh?

Glad to hear you're ok! I live in your area.... if you want me to boycott them, just let me know who they are !!!!!!

Well you have no reason to feel nervous around these controlling women. They are the ones who should feel ashamed of their behavior. They must be a joy at home. Thanks for posting the summary of what happened. You're right...no one is ever going to fill the shoes of Super Cindy. Its a no-win situation. I'm surprised these women let Super Cindy leave!

Glad to hear the dentist was strong enough to step up and help you despite his office help. Take care...that infection sounded horrible.

:grouphug: You have a lot of class.

I'm dealing with some Girl Scout leader drama right now and I was just talking with my dh about how office politics can really make or break it for an employee. It's pathetic how adults can behave badly.

She even had them over for lunch on her days off? Wow, that is some assistant.

Hope you heal nicely...take care! :wizard:

I'm glad to hear you're ok! It's good to hear that you held yourself with such grace, I know I couldn't have done it.

You got that right! I truly believe that office politics and how you are perceieved by the powers-that-be is what dictates whether you are "in" or "out". Actual ability certainly does not come into play as much as perception and your "in" status.
