Last night we all sat down to watch one of our new Christmas DVDs and then as it finished, I logged on to Facebook, while my daughter fussed about getting ready for bed.

I had 2 surprises - firstly my son had added me as a friend on Facebook. He is a 17 year old University student. I thought the last thing he would want is his mum knowing what he's up to!

Secondly he had sent me a private message - in it he had told me that he discovered he was gay. He couldn't bring himself to tell me face to face and he was really worried about it.

My mind was racing, taking in this info at the same time as chatting to my daughter (yes, you do have to take off your new slippers before you go to bed!) but eventually she went to bed and my son went in the kitchen and I could follow him - intending to chat about it and try to help ease his worries.

"I got your Facebook message"

Blank look

"You've just added me as a friend"

Blank.......... "err.....no"

You sent me a message

"No, I didn't"

Back in the living room I showed him the message. He didn't send it. As he pointed out, it was sent while we were all watching the film.

He tried to log in to Facebook: "password not accepted"

He requested a change of password be sent to his hotmail address. Tried to log in there :"password not accepted"

Little tip for all of us here : if you have the same password for ALL your accounts AND someone finds it out, then they have access to ALL your accounts

We spent the rest of the evening reporting his hacked accounts to Hotmail and Facebook We can't even log in to see what other mischief the hacker has been up to.

My son is quite laid back about it, but I am thinking the hacker has NO IDEA what could have happened when I read that message. There are, unfortunately, still plenty of families who would throw a fit if their 17 year old son announced he was gay. It COULD have cause all sorts of trouble.

Horrible to think it must be someone who knows him quite well to have been able to search for me on Facebook and add me as a friend. :sad2:

Like you have said, it's a good job you are an understanding mother and not some ranting homophobic monster! What a nasty thing to have done - this is way beyond a prank. I hope you manage to sort this out soon.

Thats's an awful thing to do. Some friends eh. Just as well your son was at home with you and not away at Uni as you would have spent a few sleepless nights until you could have talked to him.

If your DS does online banking he should change his password for that.

Glad you reacted in a positive way. Shame that your DS's account was hacked.

Fortunately he doesn't do internet banking (hardly any money!) so there is no risk there. His university account also has different password controls so that is safe.
We haven't heard any more from Facebook or Hotmail after their initial acknowledgements. I just hope they are sorting it.

Am I bad because I was teasing him a little bit? I said I was a bit sorry it wasn't true as it might have meant his bedroom would be tidier and he could give me advice on fashion. (just a joke - I know it's just a stereotype. :))

No I think that's quite acceptable considering the fact that it's not true :lmao:

Does hotmail not have some kind of a password recovery system? Most email providers have a password question or a backup email address that can help you to recover your password should you lose it :)

Another thought - I think your advice about using the same password needs extending a little. The wonderful password recovery systems of many websites whereby they email you a new password means that you really should guard your email password with your life. If somebody obtains that, then they can just reset your other passwords without knowing them...

just as well the so called 'joke' backfired on them.hope they are feeling very sorry right now- shame on them :sad2:

Thats not a nice prank to play but it back fired as you were very supportive. Hope your son gets his accounts sorted soon.

That's shocking - it could have caused so much trouble for your family. :sad2: Glad you can laugh about it now.

Thats an awful prank to play !! Good job it didnt cause too much hurt and upset.

This happened to a friend of mine. Someone hacked her account and sent really horrible messages to her friends and family. It took quite a while for her to be able to make sure everyone knew it wasn't her. And they left threatening messages for her too. Very nasty business.
Hope your son gets it sorted too. Very random passwords are best but really hard to remember

how awful, hope your son gets it sorted
