I guess you can't really be scared to death

If you could, I wouldn't be here tonight. Neither would my sister.

I was planning on meeting my sister today to do some shopping. She lives about 45 minutes away from where I live and where we were going to shop, so she just called me from her car when she got close so we could arrange a place to meet. So I'm talking to her and she says, "Someone is coming up to my car." Then she yells, "What did you say? What do you want?" At this point, I'm terrified, because my sister is very smart but sometimes is more kind-hearted than logical, and I was afraid she'd do something to get herself hurt. So I yelled, "Wendy, don't!" right as her phone went dead.

I can't even describe how scared I was. I had a strong feeling that she was on the exit ramp from the interstate waiting to turn onto the road that I was on when we were talking, and I was feet away from there, so I drove up to that place, but the exit ramp was on my left with about 5 lanes of traffic between us, and I couldn't see anything. I could see that a lot of people were walking around right there, so I was a little comforted thinking nothing too bad was likely to happen with people around. So I started praying and decided to turn around so that I'd be on the other side of the road and could get a better look at the exit ramp. But there was a lot of traffic, and it took me forever to turn around. I called her back, but she didn't answer. I think about 5 minutes probably elapsed, but it felt like 5 days. I was about 30 seconds away from calling 911 because I just couldn't get back to that ramp when she finally called me back.

Apparently she was at the stop light on the exit ramp I thought she was on. A man came up to her window and, with a few explitives thrown in that I'll leave out, told her to call 911. He said that his homeless friend was being attacked with a machete. She did call 911, but the guy continued to bang on her window and was demanding that he give her the phone. She couldn't go anywhere because there were cars on all sides of her and behind her. The 911 operator was urging her to drive off, but she couldn't. In the meantime, people in the cars around her were calling 911 on her behalf. The operator actually told her that they were getting more calls about it right then. Finally the light turned green and she drove off, and that was it. She called me as soon as she got off the phone with 911.

I did watch the first few minutes of the news tonight, but I didn't see anything about a homeless man being attacked by a machete. I don't know if any of the story was true. In retrospect, she was still stuck at the red light when I was driving right past her but couldn't see because of all the traffic in between us. I don't know what I would have done to help if I could have stopped, but at least I would have been able to see her. Waiting until she called me back was absolutely horrible.

That is UNBELIEVABLE!!! I am glad she was not in serious jeopardy, and that she did not get hurt. Thank God there were other poeple around! :sunny:

Wow!! What a scary situation for BOTH of you! :guilty: I would have really panicked!

I'm glad she's okay - sounds as though that man was either off his rocker - or trying to swipe your sister's phone -- or even her and her car!

My family sometimes mocks me because I am a stickler for locking the car doors as soon as I get in and out of the car. I never leave my window down the whole way at red lights, too.

I know how waiting is so bad . I am very glad to hear your sister is doing good. I worry when my family does the same and have scared my family with similar situations

How frightening! Glad you and your sister are okay! :grouphug:

That must have been so terrifying for you. I know that I am afraid for my sister every day. She is a cop. A deputy sheriff, as a matter of fact. Every day I ask her where she is, when I call her. I'm always afraid that something will happen to her while we are on the phone together and what could I do?

I can't imagine not having my sister. I just won't even consider the possibility.

I'm so glad that your sister is safe. {{{HUGS}}} sweetie.

YIKES!! Glad everyone is safe...that would've have terrified the life out of me!

I am glad to hear that so many people were calling 911 for her.

I can see why you were terrified, that was scary. I am glad to hear that everything turned out okay for you two.

Kermit,
I am from your area and go shopping over in Greenville all of the time. That is really scary. I never go without my husband but that would be scary even with him with me. Where was that at? You would think they would have put that on the news to warn others. It sounds more like someone trying to get into her car than something really happening to his friend. Glad your sister was able to get away.

I second that!!
My mom used to never lock her car doors until I finally nagged her enough to where she got in the habit.

She told me one time she was driving through the mall parking lot after dark and the stores were about to close. A young man came running out of a department store right where she was driving. He was carrying what appeared to be a stack of jeans and looked "desperate". Security came out right behind him.

He started to run right towards my mom's car, stopped, locked eyes with her and then took off in another direction with security fallowing him. He had obviously stolen those jeans and been spotted and was looking for a get-away.

He didn't try to break in or carjack my moms car but she sensed he thought about it and decided he didn't have time with security so close. THANKFULLY she had her doors locked and he wouldn't have been able to if he tried.

she thanked me for that advice and has followed it ever since.

She was going north on I-85 and had exited the Woodruff Rd exit. There are always a lot of homeless people and people with signs for jobs on that part of Woodruff Rd, but I've always assumed they were harmless and that with that level of traffic, nothing too bad could happen. However, as soon as my sister hung up her phone, I immediately thought of the police officer who was shot right there a few years ago. He had pulled over a guy for riding a moped on the Interstate, and the guy had just robbed a bank, so he just shot the police officer right there at about noon with many people watching.

I get off at that exit alot but coming from the other direction. I didn't realize that it was such a dangerous place. We have been here a little over a year. I didn't know about the policeman. I can see how she could get stuck there without anywhere to go. We have come from Greenville coming by that exit from that direction before and the traffic is always backed way down the ramp.
