I guess I’m going solo to Disneyland

Now that we own at VGV, she's already told me she's taking the train for our 2011 visit.

How long is the train ride from the east coast? I have a son who lives in Long Beach. I never thought about taking the train.

My wife spent the whole day in the backyard gardening -- including filling large planters with potting soil and planting several new plants. She seems strangely well enough to garden, clean the house, go shopping -- just not well enough to get on a plane to go to Disneyland. I wonder if that doctor's note was forged? :rolleyes1

Charlotte-LAX is a long flight and those airplane seats don't really have a lot of support. We're you upgrading to 1st class/business?

Our Delta flight last summer Detroit-Salt Lake City, I swear it had to be on Delta's oldest planes with the lumpiest seats. I don't have a back problem, but got off the plane kind of stiff.

Couldn't imagine how I would feel if I had a back problem.

Seems kind of a bummer that you've bought VGC and have a wife that doesn't like to fly.

Don't know where you would catch Amtrak, but you would probably need to extend your trip. I think it takes 3 days from Chicago to LA.

You should check out AMTRAK.com. I love taking the train..forced down time!
It is a long slow way to travel but so relaxing and seeing the country is wonderful. The seats are large and spacious..I never feel cramped even on a long trip. Getting a room (or roomette) is fun and meals in the dining car are included.
So as not to hijack...Mike's DW doesn't want to try the train this time? Of course, it's probably in the highest point bucket by now.

I booked two first-class round-trip tickets.

She was all up for flying when we booked this trip last year. Since then, there has been a noticable increase in the number of flight issues on the news, starting with the US Air plane landing on the Hudson. I think that spooked her.

My wife would leave days before me on the train, while I would still fly. Same thing going home.

With all the Swine Flu news, she's too spooked to leave the house, so no train ride this time.

I would love to take the train sometime--but with my own business there's no way I could take off that much additional time. When I was a kid we'd take the train to Kansas City from L.A.--and I was too young to fully appreciate it.

Well I was on an Air Tran flight to MCO listening to XM radio about the plane in the Hudson.

I actually booked US Airways to fly to MCO the day after the Hudson incident!

UGH..I'm with Mike's DW..I HATE to fly...I wish they'd re-open the Sunset Limited from El Paso to Orlando..of course I don't know if DH has enough vacation time to do that trip....I am already dreading the flight to WDW in January.

I must have missed this one before! Sorry to hear you are going solo, Mike, but I've done Disneyland solo a couple of times when I tagged along to CA with DH when he had to go on business trips in the Ahaheim area. It's pretty easy and fun to do DL alone compared to WDW. If you have any old friends in the area, it's also a great place to meet up with them. That's another thing I tend to do. There are some nice restaurants in the DTD are at DL too. You'll have a great time, but I hope you plan to let your DW know what's happening every minute, so she can feel like she was there with you!

It's a totally different vacation staying multiple days, as opposed to "annual passholder daytrips" (I grew up in Anaheim, worked as a CM, and it wasn't until we moved 3 hours up the coast that I was able to enjoy DLR as a RESORT).

My advise, talk to people in line...talk to A LOT of people in line. People at DL always seem friendly and open to chat...especially if you have a lanyard with pins on it to chat about. Somewhere, in one of the lines, you may hook up with a group that is there "sans spouses", and you may be able to hang out with them for half a day.

Also, chat with the cast members, you can learn some amazing stuff from them. :3dglasses

I agree with this method! Last time I was at DL alone, I kept running into a bunch of high school students from Austrailia. I joked with them in line a couple of times, and before I knew it, they were tagging along with me. I was the "mascot grandma" for them, and we had a great day!

Mike, they have medication out now that will knock your wife out before the plane leaves, and she wakes up rejuvinated when you land. She won't even knew she flew!!!!:goodvibes

I may have to get me some too  , not for flying but for the drive from NY to WDW !! ( my 3 kids :dance3: but cannot stand the inevitable pockets of bickering that happen over what dvd to watch next, who doesn't want to stop at blah blah to eat, etc. etc. although I don't think DH would appreciate me sleeping through all this 'fun' :rotfl: )

DVC Mike, hope Mrs. DVC Mike is feeling better real soon :goodvibes
