I know that some people question whether you can get any credits refunded to your CC. I did this a couple of times last year, and I just did it again! After rebooking a cheaper flight, I called and had them place the credit back. The rep. didn't give me a problem at all. Yeah!

I called the refund dept 3 times in March trying to get a credit on my cc with no luck - I guess I'll try again now that our trip is over. I booked and then got a better DING fare and I know we won't be able to use the credit before the deadline in January and I would love to get a refund since others seem to have luck with us...just not me so far!!

Was your original reservation for a refundable or non-refundable fare?

wow!! That's great! question ~ did you book the same exact flight # for the cheaper fare? We have our flights booked for August/Septmeber and are hoping for a Ding! or systemwide sale since the price was a little high. I would really like to keep our flight times, so I'm wondering if I have a better chance of getting a refund if I book the same flight#'s if a sale were to come out.

Officially you're only eligible for a cash (credit card) refund if you're on the exact same flight and the exact same fare bucket or if you booked a fully refundable fare.

Every fare has a letter code associated with it, if the letter code is the same then you're eligible for a cash/cc refund. That will never be the case if you're going to a DING fare but might be the case if you booked an internet special fare and a lower internet fare comes out.

SW is one of the few airlines to allow a full credit, no change fee, and allows you to use your credit for a different passenger. Let's not give them a reason to change this generous policy by making multiple requests for exceptions. Nothing wrong with asking once or maybe twice but after that either use your credit or find someone else who can.

I've seen people selling their SW credits on eBay. It might be worth looking into if you know you won't be able to use it.

Something else to watch for when you rebook your flights at a lower fare: They ask if you want the "refundable" portion of the ticket refunded or added to your credit. Apparently some of the taxes are refundable on all flights. So now I always say yes to this question even if I have to pay a couple of dollars toward the rebooking. This lowers the amount of the credit they hold if you are saving it for a later date.

Well, we rebooked the EXACT same flights and buckets (internet only fare) and the customer service said no to crediting credit card -- she would only do if the original fare was refundable. It was a toll call and she seemed very knowledgeable, but I'd certainly be willing to make another toll call if you or someone had success with my situation.

The same fare bucket refers to the letter designation for the fare, AFAIK internet only fares can be different fare buckets during fare sales. Look at your confirmations and see if the fare code is exactly the same. You might make one more phone call but a think a handful of people who got an exception are creating unrealistic expectations.

If you can't use the credit find a friend that can.
