well everyone today is my birthday and the gift i gave myself was a flu shot:cool1: not the most lavish gift in the world , but if it keeps me well over the flu season and for my feb trip to disney i'm all for it. and for all of you reading this don't forget yours. one last note to mention the swine fluvacine and the regular flu vacine are all in one this year , so here's to all our health.

It's too early to get them in our neck of the woods-we wait until late Oct or early Nov to get ours. I had influenza once and that was one time too many :scared1::scared1::scared1: DS15 had H1N1 last year and no longer complains about getting a flu shot.

I would think that as well but I know several people that have gotten the flu within the last few days and 2 teenage sisters that had to go to the ER for IV hydration last Thursday. It seems to be hitting very early here. I got my flu shot last week.

From the CDC.gov website:

Does getting vaccinated against flu early in the season pose a risk that immunity may wane before the end of the season?
No. Flu vaccination provides protection against the influenza strains contained in the seasonal vaccine for the entire season. Vaccination can begin as soon as vaccine becomes available.

Shh.. don't tell the germs, but we never get the flu shot in our household. I totally understand the benefits, but we have had way too many bad side effects. We are the exception to the rule.

Good for you, what a wise gift to give yourself :thumbsup2! Our local drug stores are advertising already, so I will be getting mine either their or my drs office asap. DH will get his thru the VA when he has his annual physical early Oct. Knock on wood, they've never made us sick and we rarely catch a cold. Like the saying goes, 'an ouch of prevention is worth a pound of cure'. :goodvibes

There is no need to wait. The vaccine that you would, either now or in November is the exact same one. In fact, if there is an early flu season, those who get it early will have better protection, since it takes 6 weeks to optimize immunity.

I will get mine this year if the suppy is there. Last year I had the H1N1 all I have to say is I do not want that again.

They also go on to say that the vaccine is effective for about 6 months, which puts us mid-March-which is still flu season around here...

Do you have a link to that? I can't find that information...

Not true.

"Is there a best time to get the flu shot?
There's no advantage to waiting, Bernstein says. The sooner you get it, the sooner you're protected."

"How long does it take to kick in?
About two weeks. "

"Can the vaccine wear off, especially if you get it early?
No. If you get vaccinated now, you'll still be protected when flu season wraps up next year, Bernstein says."

OP DH and I got ours last week.

Does anyone here ever get the mist instead of the shot? I did once, and that was the year I got the stomach flu :headache: Now I ask for the shot instead  Although I had some form of stomach flu last year and I got the shot.

Stomach flu is not influenza (flu), it is generally gastroenteritis.

I know it is the same vaccine but there have been many years where people in our area get the vaccine in Sept to end up with the flu in March. The vaccines usually aren't available here until Oct anyway. We wait as long as we can and we don't usually see cases of the flu here until after the first of the year-there is usually one here or there but no real outbreaks until then.

I got mine about a month ago. And a few days later, my shingles vaccine.

Thx for the reminder about shingles vaccine Dan, we'll ask our drs. advise :thumbsup2. DH & I have never had one, but many of our senior friends have gotten theirs and testify how important they are, as if preventive, why take a chance on such a painful illness. :scared:

I was surprised to see Walgreens advertising flu shots last week. I don't remember it ever starting this early.

To the OP: Happy Birthday! It's my birthday too, today! :yay:

And thanks for the reminder. I have my 6 week postpartum check up next Monday and I need to get my flu shot while I'm at the doctor's as well!

Read the info under the heading, Why do I need to get vaccinated every year?

http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/flu-shots/ID00017

You don't lose total immunity, it's just that the vaccine's effectiveness diminishes. That is why I hold off until at least the beginning of October to receive my flu shot. If we should have a huge outbreak in my community, I would consider getting it sooner.

It seems as though the information the Mayo Clinic is putting out is different then the info the CDC is putting out....who to believe?
