So I've been searching for another job for a while, but sort of gave up for a bit recently since our vacation is coming up and the holidays and all. Well a company I applied with over 7 weeks ago called, the person they hired quit before even starting.

So I had an interview scheduled for today (went great).....BUT this morning, the boss calls me in his office, after being gone a week in Israel. He asks if I am looking for another job. EEK! not sure how he knew or found out. Very uncomfortable and awkward situation to say the least.

I also have an old boss that is starting a new job today (defense again) and I am hoping to possibly go back to work for her, but not sure when she could bring me on board. So I have two possibilities brewing.

Anyways- I was honest and told him i was unhappy (i usually just smile and keep working and don't complain at work itself). He said they are going to find a replacement for me, starting now and we will chat right before my vacation if I have not found another job yet and then possibly I could go part time or help transition to a new person for a bit. I am not offended, heck, i want out of there and they deserve to have the right committed person in place too.

But, it is sort of a relief that he knows and that I might have something else to go to.

anyone else have a current employer find out you were job hunting? I've kept my resumes blind online, only used personal email at home etc. I even stopped at whataburger to change into my suit (we have casual dress at my current work- jeans!). anyhow- hopefully this gig comes through and I can put in my two weeks this week or next.

I had to tell the new place that if they hire me, i am gone 12/10-12/20---thankfully they didn't ask where I was going- i was going to have to explain the whole disney obsession again. :rotfl:

Eeek!! That was my worst fear before...

Good luck with the possible opportunities! I'm starting a new job tomorrow...just retail, but I do plan to keep my eyes open for other opportunities as you just never know! :)

It sounds like it went over well, at least. Good luck with the new job prospect!

What an odd turn of events!
Hope all works out okay.

As a matter if fact our boss had this discussion with us a few weeks ago. At one point when we did not have any customers in the store there were 5 people all job hunting at their computers. Our bosses know we want out, but since most of us just thought of this job as a stepping stone our boss knows it's ok.

Well at least they know!
Here's hoping everything goes smooth and you get what you want!:)

Best of luck with this, Michelle - hope it all works out for you! :grouphug: Nice that it's a bit of a relief to have it out in the open :goodvibes

Brandie, congrats on your new position! :thumbsup2

cheers,
:flower3:

I've never been found out, but DH has. We work for the same company (different divisions/buildings) but there is crossover of personnel between our depts. So MY boss found out DH was interviewing for a job in another state, so obviously they knew I'd be leaving if he got it! My boss pulled me in and asked if I was looking too or unhappy. What could she do to keep me? I asked for a raise, she said maybe (never got one). DH didn't end up getting the job and we're both still working here!

I work for an insurance company and I was tranferred to a department that I hated working in when I lived in Chicago.
I was looking for a new job during lunchtime and my former boss, from our suburb office, was visiting the Chicago office. I actually told her I was looking for another job, that the department I was working at was unbearable.
My old boss offered me a job in a different department in the suburbs instead and it was the best thing I did. I am glad I told someone that I was unhappy, because I loved the company I was working for, but hated the department I was working in.
I think you should speak-up to management, if the company is great, but what you are doing is not.
Hope you find what you are looking for!:goodvibes

Hi Michelle!!

How did he bust you? Is he a lurker on the Dis? At least now you can look for a new position and not worry! Good luck. I am sure things will work out for you!~

OP, When you went for your interview, did you give details of your current employer? They may have contacted them to do a check on you or a reference of some sort?

Anyway, well done for being assertive and not just smiling and keeping quiet. You have a vacation to look forward to and usually when you have been away, you come back with a new perspective on things. I would say rested, but for some reason, after Disney I think the word EXHAUSTED is more appropriate!

I have been on the other end of the finding out side of things. In my experience, we never really confronted the employee about what we suspected unless the employer that is interviewing our employee contacts us. I worked in the medical field and Doctors try not to hire someone from colleagues.

I have had employers who I have turned in my two week notice conveniently forget and try to interview me for a next tier position. That particular job was my favorite and actually the only reason why i left was because the commute was killing me. 3 hours round trip.

good luck on job search and see you at DAP.

I had a big disagreement with management at my last job. I let them know that I would not be able to work there with the changes in policy they made and that I would be looking for a new job. As soon as I found one I put in my notice. I was gone within a month and 1/2 of the disagreement. Best change I ever made. :goodvibes

Well, at least it's out there now. I'm glad that you told the truth and didn't just keep pluggin' along. You deserve to be happy!

so far, it's been awkward but okay......in fact, I came up with a great tag line for a new product the other day and he said 'too bad you are leaving'.....lol

I am still waiting to hear back from my job interview on monday- sent out the thank you notes etc. The recruiter asked again yesterday about what days i needed off for my 'vacation', so i am hoping that is a good sign that they are seriously considering me. Hopefully I'll hear something soon!

Fingers crossed!

Nice of your boss to think so highly of you that he is surprised you are actually working. Grrrrrrrr.

I hope you get the job you interviewed for.

I got caught once too while interviewing at another advertising agency. I was caught by my boss when she saw me in the lobby because she was interviewing there too for a different position!

But in this case, she said to me "I didn't see you if you didn't see me" I told her sure thing.

Two weeks later, I had the job. When I put in my notice, she said she had just heard she got the job she was applying for too so I'd see her around the office.

I wasn't too thrilled but at least she wasn't my boss anymore.

What a funny story!
