Are you sure about that? I just returned something I bought online (not even in stores) and it had been reduced but I got the price on my reciept.

According to store policy I saw in the summer, "seasonal" returns, with receipts, are refunded at the clearance price. That's why I didn't buy any of my pool stuff there. Target has NO flexibility in returns.

I don't think Wal Mart posts that you are "allowed" three returns without receipt - their policy is that you must have a receipt to return an item. The no receipt policy is an exception to that... and they will take returns after you've exceeded that number, with a supervisor approval.

I think its a store by store policy, I havent had that type of problem. No one ever looks at my license when I return with a receipt and I have returned a TON of stuff with out receipts in my life of shopping at walmart.

I think I can count on one hand the number of items I've returned in the last three years!

There are some people who will buy things on sale, try to sell them on eBay and then return to the store what they don't sell. I don't agree with it and am glad that stores are starting to put limits on returns.

It's so funny to see the Wal Mart haters and the "one more reason not to go there".... Target's return policy is WAY more restrictive - seasonal items, even defective ones - are returned at current clearance price - receipt required. It would suck if my $300 pre lit tree broke and they wanted to refund $75!

Anyway... Wal Mart's return without a receipt policy is one of the most liberal ones out there - and they'll usually have a supervisor override the code. My friend who got married recently had to explain a higher # of no reciept returns, as her license # was restricted - explained to a mgr and it was fine.

I avoid target most of the time, especially if it is something I might end up having to exchange or return. I am to the point where I will not buy anything in a sealed box again. If Ican't look the item over before purchasing, I will not buy it.
Last item I had problems with was a coffee maker a couple of months ago. I looked everywhere, and Target had a B&D in my price range that had the features I wanted (timer and insulated caraf). Got it home and found that the plastic cover over the digital clock was broken. I went back the next day to return it. Somehow I had lost the receipt. Not only did I have to show them my lisence (which would be expected) but I had to give them a voided check and let them scan a credit card. I wasn't even trying to get cash, I just wanted an even exchange.

I actually refused to shop there for many yrs after problems returning an alarm clock.

I'm with the people who have said they can't imagine having 3 returns in 30 days. I don't think I've had 3 returns in....ever.

I love both Wal-Mart AND Target and if they have strict return polcies, good for them. It's a busness, not a swap meet. Shrinkage is a huge problem in the retail business and return schemes are a huge part of the problem. It's unfortunate that innocent people are inconvenienced by the policies, but they gotta do what they gotta do to stop the theft.

I worked at a woman's clothing store at the mall when I was in college. A co-worker was having her non-employee friend buy an item and then the employee would steal the same item so her friend could return it with the receipt and so she or the friend could get it for free.

What if it's a gift, you know the person bought it at WalMart but you don't want to ask the gift giver for a receipt!?!? Or, what if you ask the gift giver for the receipt and they don't have it!? Then, you should get stuck w/something you don't want or already have?!!?!? For example, DS rec'd. a video game he already had. It had the Wal-Mart sticker on it. So, why the heck shouldn't Wal-Mart take it back w/o a receipt?! It was purchased at WalMart, it was new in pkg., it wasn't used and he already has one. What would we do w/two!?!?!?

It's the holidays. People return tons of stuff. Why can't they take returns w/o receipt and give a store credit for last sale price. What's so wrong about that!?!? More than likely, people paid more for it (and could prove it if they had a receipt), Wal-Mart isn't losing money b/c they're giving you a store credit.

Well, we had 3 returns at WalMart and at Target in less than a week! We've been getting together w/family since after Christmas and have been returning things.

Here's how it went (we had receipts):

Target:
Return extra boxed Christmas cards we didn't use (Dec. 26th)
Return 2 turtlenecks b/c DS has plenty of turtlenecks (Dec. 27th)
Return movie (w/gift receipt) b/c he has it (Dec. 29th)

WalMart:
Return yarn that Grandma didn't need for afghan she made us (Dec. 23rd)
Return video game that DS received and already had (Dec. 26th)
Return 3 cashmere sweaters bought for nieces but didn't give (Dec. 28th)

Why didn't we return everything at once?! B/c things didn't work out that way!

I have to say that I love Target and do not like Wal-Mart. Target's return system has been great. If you have the receipt you don't even need your credit card, they automatically credit it -great when I have had to return something for my Mom or when I need someone to return something for me. I had one return last year without a receipt. First they asked me if I knew which credit card was used -they can look up the purchase with the card. This return was from someone who did not give me a gift receipt so I did not have the card. She then asked for my license and told me the policy of only 2 returns without a receipt a year. I totally understand that, it is how they keep their prices low. Shoplifting is a major expense to them and most shoplifters will try to return the stuff they steal. I have never had to wait more then 5 minutes to return and have never had my return questioned. Plus, when I buy something I almost always get a gift receipt even if I haven't asked for one. I did return something once without my receipt (I had it at home) but knew which credit card I used. They looked it up and returned it at the price I paid for it.

Y'know, I honestly wish the store where I work enlisted some kind of blacklisting system. We have people who abuse the lenient return policy to ridiculous degrees on a daily basis, but because absolutely nothing in the store is computerized or automated to any degree, there's no way to track anything, including shrink. We're a major nationwide hobby chain, and because the founder believes in employees using "elbow grease" and "getting their hands dirty," he doesn't want anything to do with computers.

It's nobody's "fault", but I'll shop at places that have liberal return policys and I won't shop at places that don't.

I'm not a huge returner, but I want to know I can without restrictions.

I'm not sure why any retail outfit would have a return policy "without restrictions" but it is true that you can shop anywhere you want.

But actually, it is that PP "fault" that she bought more of what she needed and then expected the stores to take them back as if it were a loan instead of a purchase.

You must be a retailer or something. I have never had trouble returning anything at my favorite stores, like Macy's . They don't even require a receipt as long as you've used the store card. They bend over backwards to take your return and never accuse anyone of them borrowing anything unless it was used.

I wouldn't shop anywhere that had only gave a week for returns, or had a limit on returns, or didn't take returns at all. There are a couple of places I'd like to shop at but don't because of this.

I'm a Realtor, people hardly ever try to "return" their product.

Obviously different retail stores will do a cost/benefit analysis when determining what their return policy will be. The results will not be the same for every type of store so they vary. I would guess that fraud and theft are more common in larger discount stores than in higher end retail outfits which may be why Macy's has a more lenient policy.

I wouldn't shop anywhere that had only gave a week for returns, or had a limit on returns, or didn't take returns at all. There are a couple of places I'd like to shop at but don't because of this.

My guess is that many retail stores know they lose a certain percentage of their clients due to their policies but have decided that their loss due to return schemes are higher. As you've said, and I agree, you can shop where ever you want for whatever reasons you want.

I'm surprised that you could return Xmas cards the day after Xmas. Did you get a full refund?
As for the other items, I don't see why anyone is making a big deal of them. those items can be place back out to be sold.
