I Gave A Final Today

I teach 7th grade English. My final was on Scantron (the bubble-in thingy). On the information section, after name, class period, etc., came "Subject". I had a student ask, "What do we put here?" Without batting an eye, I answered "Calculus." I had 4 students write that in!! Isn't that pathetic??

ahhh....scantrons! I work in a HS copy room and that's where one of the campus scantron machines is located. Some of the new teachers don't know how to use the machine. I love when students come in with tests to correct - I show them how to use it and tell them that they've just learned a new skill to put on a job application!

don't you think at least some, if not all, of those students were just being smart***es? i would have done that in high school b/c i was a huge smart***. i'm sur ethey didn't really think the subject was calculus.

Nope, those four students wouldn't know what calculus was if their lives depended on it. I'm sure they thought "calculus" must have been another word for Literary Terms, which was what the final was on. Seventh graders are not known for having more than one thought in their heads at a time.

I work as a secretary in the department of nursing at a state college. All I can say is this: the USA is in big trouble. Nice as these kids are, many of them have lousy work ethics and are rarely willing to accept responsibility for their own failings. Lord help us if someone criticizes them! We had a number of juniors who failed first semester (mind you, they earned those grades), and only two of the 18 have admitted that they should have worked harder. We've had numerous calls from students and parents, some of the faculty have been threatened, and a few lawsuits could be in the making. It's just ridiculous!
