I finally saw "Walk the Line" - Reece SO should not have won the Oscar!

I finally saw "Walk the Line." Before I saw it, I was really happy that Reece won the Oscar just because I like her. But then I saw the performance...she was NOT June Carter. Has she ever seen footage of June? Have the members of the Academy ever seebn footage of June?

Sure, Reece was cute and funny and perky and a good singer, but she in no way re-created June. She had none of June's earthy qualities, none of the odd tension with Johnny.

Any June Carter fans out there who agree with me?

I can't recall hearing much of June Carter's singing, but I think that Reese did a wonderful job. I don't think that an actor has to "be" the person they're prtraying, but should make the character believable. Maybe Hollywood was appealing to people like me, who hadn't heard much of June's singing. (she had more of a real Country "twang" - right?)

Not seeing the other movies that the other actresses nominated were in, I have no clue if Reese gave the best performance or not. I don't think the Oscar was given because she imitated June Carter Cash the best, but because she was the best actress up for the award and had the best part.

I do think that Joachim (sp?) should have won for his role too..he was very good!

I do not know June Carter at all, but I can say I was underwhelmed w/the performance of RW overall. I kept thinking the whole time, she won? ITA that Joaquin (SP?) Phoenix wasa robbed...although I did not see Capote so I really can't say. But comparing the 2 leading rolesof Reese vs. Phoenix....no contest. Phoenix.
She just seemed too...."surfac-y" for lack of a better description...not a very entrenching performance..I could have seen many actors do the same job, except for the singing, I do think that took talent for sure, and courage.


I keptthinking that I would've liked to have seen Ashley Judd in the role...and not just due to the country singing conection, but just overall.

I agree Missypie! I love Reese. But I just did not see June Carter Cash at all. Casting for the 'name' and the accent, instead of truly casting to character.

It was a good movie. But, definitely not an Oscar winner. I hate to say it, but I thought it kind of came off as the same old loser/drug user/musician/with major issues type of story. It just did not have an interesting or positive take at all. Could they not find anything interesting at all to put a spin on. It tried to get into the 'stand by your man' type of love story. But, I really never thought it quite got there.

You know, the person with the screen presence who really kept catching my eye in every scene they were in was Vivian Cash. Johnny's first wife. I don't know why, but I thought she was GOOD!

I am a Reese fan but have never seen footage of June to compare but I do agree that Joaquin was robbed for sure.

Reese learned 8 songs for the movie and Joaquin learned 26! Plus he did an amazing job of acting.

I saw a performance by Johnny Cash and the Carter family in the summer of 1964 in a small outdoor park in Virginia. At the time, I most definately was NOT a fan of county music (I was 12 and loved the Beatles and rock n' roll, but my parents still dragged me to every country show they went to), but the performance I saw made such an impression that I sat as close as I could get (2nd or 3rd row) and it still sticks in my head today.

Johnny sang his songs with the Carter family as back up, and there was some interaction between him and June, who truly was the comedienne of the family at that time. I don't know that I would describe the interaction between Johnny and June at this time as "tension", but there was certainly a spark.

The point I'm getting at is the Reese I saw in Walk the Line gave me glimpses back to the June I saw in 1964. The scene where she got her dress tangled in the guitar string WAS June in 1964. The only thing Reese missed was how June used to dance while she was on stage. She had this little hoppy kind of two-step she would dance in time to fast music, like clog dancing but without the clogs.

Because I was only 12 I'm sure there were things in the 1964 show I saw that may have gone over my head, but Reese did remind me very much of the June I saw, and I felt Reese did deserve an Oscar for her performance.

I thought her performance was thin and one dimensional.

I think it was only given to her as a toss at the movie, since it needed to win SOMETHING.

I LOVED Joaquin's performance too...i felt it so not fair how she won and her performance was so so and he lost and his was amazing!

The tension to which I was referring was sexual...don't know if that word will survive the censors. They had it when they were in their 60s...Must have been wild when they were young.
