I feel stupid asking, but...

We have a reservation for AKL in November. We didn't add on the dining plan because after doing the math we realized a room discount would be a better deal for us than the free dining offer. (Yes, we're taking a gamble on room discounts even being offered...)

My really stupid question....does "room only" literally mean room only? (See? Stupid!) I ask because we already have our park tickets, too, and everything is already linked in MDE. It occurred to me the other day that even if a room discount IS offered, we may not be able to take advantage of it because we already have our park tickets.

Hence, the stupid question. (In all fairness, though, this is only our 3rd trip and I'm still getting familiar with all the lingo!)

So what say you, oh wise experts of all things WDW?

You're correct re: the meaning of "room only". You'll definitely be able to take advantage of that discount should they offer it.

But I already have park tickets, too. So technically I don't have a "room only" reservation. Do I? I have a room + tickets. Is that a package? Or is "package" defined by whether or not the dining plan is included? (See why I'm confused!? Aaaggghhh!!!)

You can still get the room discount if offered even if you have a package. I do it all the time.

regardless of whether you have a room only or a package you can take advantage of a room rate discount.

but just to clarify what you do have...
if you booked only a room and then bought tickets separately you have a room only reservation.
if you booked a room and tickets together you have a package.

Room only is literal. The tickets have no bearing on your room only reservation as you purchased them separately.

Thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you!!!!

So I do have a package since I booked the room and tickets together, but I can still use a room discount if one is offered.

You guys are the bestest!!! THANK YOU!!!!

I always took "room only" discount to mean the discount portion is only going to come off the room portion of the bill. We have a "package" (room, tickets, DDP) booked for November at the Poly, but have a "room only" discount applied to it for 30% off the cost of the room.

As others have said the "room only" discount means the discount is only applied to the cost of the hotel room. That does not mean you cannot choose to add tickets and the dining plan to make it a package. Obviously you will pay full price for the dining plan and tickets but I have always found that to be a better deal than free dining or any other offer. (for us, I"m sure different resorts, family make up, the way you vacation can cause that to be different for some)

Now see, THAT makes total sense! Thanks for giving me a new way to look at it....that will cut down on my confusion in the future for sure!

Now I'm confused!!!
I believe that in order to procur the DDP you have to have a package that includes rack rate (no discount) rooms, unless it is a DVC reservation.
Others above posted a "package with DDP and a 30% room discount". I did not think that was possible.
Have I been wrong all these years?

you only have to pay rack rate on room and tickets when you are going for 'free dinning' - discount on the rooms is fairly common when you are purchasing the dinning plan (DDP)

besides have you seem the new prices that Disney is asking for their rooms - we need the discounts.

You can purchase the rep with you room discount but you will be paying full for the drop along with paying full price for the tickets. But you will still get the 30% discount in the room but only in the room

Sorry, Hopefully, but yes. You can book a package that includes dining and use a discount that applies only to the room portion of the package. The ticket and dining portion is paid at full cost.

If you want a FREE DINING discount, you must have a package where you pay full rack rate for the room and tickets. Also a minimum # of nights and a minimum number of ticket days is required.

Thanks for the clarification. You learn something new everyday

A room only reservation is just that - the reservation is for a room at a WDW resort. The cancelation window is much shorter (5 or 7 days w/out penalty.) you pay a deposit equal to the cost of one night for the room. % off room rate discounts apply.
A package can be:
Room + tickets
Room + tickets + dinning plan
Room + dinning plan (AP holders only)
You pay a $200 deposit and must pay the balance by 45 days before your arrival. If you cancel w/in that 45 days there is a financial penalty.
% off room discounts can apply to reduce the price of the room portion of the package.
Free dinning is another form of discount which requires that you pay full rack rate for the room and buy at least 2 days worth of tickets and you get the dinning plan for free.

Here's one more morsel of learning for you. Presently you have a room-only reservation. If you change your mind and want a package reservation as described by sndral (above), you have to re-book. Disney's booking system can't carry info over from one type of booking to the other.

But if you're just changing your room-only reservation (for ex. adding a discount), or modifying a package reservation (for ex. adding more tickets), that's just a modification and doesn't require re-booking. This matters because if you have to re-book, the room you want might not be available any more. If you have more time available, we can regale you for hours with the complexities and minutae of a Disneyworld stay. There's no college degree involved, but I think there should be. LOL

Sorry for the confusion - we paid for the dining plan in our package, it wasn't free. That is how we were able to get 30% off our room.
