I feel pretty, oh so pretty, I feel pretty, and witty, and bright! (musical theatre)

No more talk
of darkness,
Forget these
wide-eyed fears.
I'm here,
nothing can harm you -
my words will
warm and calm you.
Let me be
your freedom,
let daylight
dry -your tears.
I'm here,
with you, beside you,
to guard you
and to guide you . . .

Musical lover here, too!

Faves:

West Side Story
Moulin Rouge
A Chorus Line
Music Man
Phantom of the Opera
Seussical
Fosse (which really isn't a MUSICAL but a show nonetheless)
Anything with Barbra in it ;)
All that Jazz
Mary Poppins

Pretty much all of them, really.

The only one I really don't like - and everyone else seems to think is awesome - is The Sound of Music. I think I got burned from overexposure of it throughout school. Though I adore Julie Andrews.

I know a place where dreams are born and time is never planned '''

Never Never Land...

After Camelot, Peter Pan is a fav. I love musicals, too! Btw, the "America" dance number from West Side Story is my favorite!

I love musicals, one of my favorites is "South Pacific"

I love this song:

You've got to be taught

To hate and fear,

You've got to be taught

From year to year,

It's got to be drummed

In your dear little ear

You've got to be carefully taught.

You've got to be taught to be afraid

Of people whose eyes are oddly made,

And people whose skin is a diff'rent shade,

You've got to be carefully taught.

You've got to be taught before it's too late,

Before you are six or seven or eight,

To hate all the people your relatives hate,

You've got to be carefully taught!

On our road trip to Illinois earlier this month, DH popped the sound track of "Chorus Line" into the tape player. After a while, DD 11 said, "This is not a good tape for a family trip." I guess she was right, but the songs sure are fun. (DH and I did "Sing" for a church choir talent show [changing a few of the lyrics]. It was very funny.)

Peter Pan!!!

"I won't grow up,
(I won't grow up)
I don't want to go to school.
(I don't want to go to school)
Just to learn to be a parrot,
(Just to learn to be a parrot)
And recite a silly rule.
(And recite a silly rule)"

I love musicals! The one that sticks in my mind right now is a song from Annie. I think it is considered a musical.

The sun will come out tomorrow
bet your bottom dollar that tomorrow
there'll be sun.
Just thinkn' about tomorrow
dust away the cob webs
and the sorrows
'til theres none.
Just come n a day that's gray
and loney.
I just lift up my chin
and grin and say.
The sun will come out tomorrow
so you got to hang on to tomorrow
come what may.
Tomorrow, tomorrow
I love you tomorrow
You're only today away!

Yes, I love them, too; even though I don't have a good singing voice. Well, I just listen to them. I go to almost all the musical productions at the local little theaters.

There's a little ditty
They're singin' in the city,
Especially when they've been
On the gin or the beer.
If you've got the patience,
Your own imaginations
'll tell you just exactly what you want to hear:
Oom-pah-pah! Oom-pah-pah!
That's how it goes,
Oom-pah-pah! Oom-pah-pah!
Ev'ryone knows:
They all suppose what they want to suppose
When they hear oom-pah-pah!

I love musicals. This is one of my favorite songs:

Try to remember the kind of September
when life was slow and oh, so mellow.
Try to remember the kind of September
when grass was green and grain was yellow.
Try to remember the kind of September
when you were a tender and callow fellow,
Try to remember and if you remember the follow.

Try to remember when life was so tender
that no one wept except the willow.
Try to remember when life was so tender that
dreams were kept beside your pillow.
Try to remember when life was so tender that
love was an ember about to billow.
Try to remember and if you remember then follow.

Deep in December it's nice to remember
altho you know the snow will follow.
Deep in December it's nice to remember
without the hurt the heart is hollow.
Deep in December it's nice to remember
the fire of September that made us mellow.
Deep in December our hearts should remember and follow.

Call me crazy ... but I don't remember Pretty, and Witty, and Bright? I remember Pretty, and Witty, and Gay? I wonder, will the DIS even let me write that? :)

Mybe they were changed in a different recording? Not sure...

Here are the lyrics as I find them at http://www.westsidestory.com/site/level2/lyrics/pretty.html

MARIA
I feel pretty,
Oh, so pretty,
I feel pretty and witty and bright!
And I pity
Any girl who isn't me tonight.

I feel charming,
Oh, so charming
It's alarming how charming I feel!
And so pretty
That I hardly can believe I'm real.

See the pretty girl in that mirror there:
Who can that attractive girl be?
Such a pretty face,
Such a pretty dress,
Such a pretty smile,
Such a pretty me!

I feel stunning
And entrancing,
Feel like running and dancing for joy,
For I'm loved
By a pretty wonderful boy!

GIRLS
Have you met my good friend Maria,
The craziest girl on the block?
You'll know her the minute you see her,
She's the one who is in an advanced state of shock.

She thinks she's in love.
She thinks she's in Spain.
She isn't in love,
She's merely insane.

It must be the heat
Or some rare disease,
Or too much to eat
Or maybe it's fleas.

Keep away from her,
Send for Chino!
This is not the
Maria we know!

Modest and pure,
Polite and refined,
Well-bred and mature
And out of her mind!

MARIA
I feel pretty,
Oh, so pretty
That the city should give me its key.
A committee
Should be organized to honor me.

GIRLS
La la la la . . .

MARIA
I feel dizzy,
I feel sunny,
I feel fizzy and funny and fine,
And so pretty,
Miss America can just resign!

GIRLS
La la la la . . .

MARIA
See the pretty girl in that mirror there:

GIRLS
What mirror where?

MARIA
Who can that attractive girl be?

GIRLS
Which? What? Where? Whom?

MARIA
Such a pretty face,
Such a pretty dress,
Such a pretty smile,
Such a pretty me!

GIRLS
Such a pretty me!

ALL
I feel stunning
And entrancing,
Feel like running and dancing for joy,
For I'm loved
By a pretty wonderful boy!

no, dana, it's pretty, witty and bright. at least in the stage version, I don't recall if they changed the lyrics for the movie -- like they did for Anita's number, America.

One short day in the Emerald City,
One short day
Full of so much to do
Ev'ry way
That you look in the city
There's something exquisite
You'll want to visit
Before the day's through

--Wicked

Matchmaker, matchmaker,
make me a match,
Find me a find,
Catch me a catch,
Matchmaker, matchmaker,
Look through your book
and make me a perfect match.

--Fiddler on the Roof

come on along and listen to the lullaby of Broadway...
-- 42nd Street

Midnight, not a sound from the pavement
has the moon lost her memory?
she is smiling alone.
in the lamplight the withered leaves collect at my feet
and the wind begins to moan.

--Cats

Danacara, I remember the lyrics with gay as well.

Here's what I found: http://www.westsidestory.com/site/level2/lyrics/pretty_movie.html

I feel pretty,
Oh, so pretty,
I feel pretty, and witty and gay,
And I pity
Any girl who isn’t me today.

Another one I haven't seen listed here but I adore:

Don't talk of stars burning above;
If you're in love, Show me!
Tell me no dreams filled with desire.
If you're on fire, Show me!
Here we are together in the middle of the night!
Don't talk of spring! Just hold me tight!
Anyone who's ever been in love'll tell you that
This is no time for a chat!

Show me from My Fair Lady

I LOVE fiddler on the roof.

If I were a rich man...Matchmaker what great songs:p

Show me from My Fair Lady

Great song, as is Freddie's, "On the Street Where You Live":

I have often walked down this street before
But the pavement always stayed
beneath my feet before;
All at once, am I
Several stories high.
Knowing I'm on the street where you live.
Are there lilac trees in the heart of town?
Can you hear a lark in any other part of town?
Does enchantment pour
Out of ev'ry door?
No, it's just on the street where you live.
And oh! The towering feeling
Just to know somehow you are near.
The overpowering feeling
That any second you may suddenly appear.
People stop and stare.
They don't bother me
For there's no where else on earth
that I would rather be.
Let the time go by,
I won't care if I
Can be here on the street where you live.

People stop and stare.
They don't bother me
For there's no where else on earth
that I would rather be.
Let the time go by,
I won't care if I
Can be here on the street where you live.

Did the whole High School, summer stock and university thing! Too much fun:)

We did Jesus Christ, Superstar one summer...and one night after toooo long a rehearsal, we came up with this:

"Remember Caesar,
He was a salad
So bacon bit and croutinize him"

I love musicals (live theatre more than movies). My favorite all time movie is "The Sound of Music." Also love "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers" and "Camelot."

But give me a musical to see on stage, and I'm a happy girl. My favorite Broadway musicals are "Rent" (which I have seen 46 times and counting) and "Les Miserables."

Just went to New York last weekend and saw "The Boy From Oz," "Avenue Q," and "Aida." All of them were fantastic. I've been listening to my "Aida" original Broadway cast recording all week (gotta love Adam Pascal :)

Karen

I *love* musicals... there isn't one that I've seen that I didn't particularly care for.

This has to be one of my all time favorite songs though...

Night-time sharpens,
Heightens each sensation
Darkness stirs and
Wakes imagination
Silently the senses
Abandon their defenses

Slowly, gently
Night unfurls its splendour
Grasp it, sense it
Tremulous and tender
Turn your face away
From the garish light of day
Turn your thoughts away
From cold, unfeeling light
And listen to
The music of the night

Close your eyes
And surrender to your
Darkest dreams
Purge your thoughts
Of the life
You knew before
Close your eyes
Let your spirit
Start to soar
And you'll live
As you've never
Lived before

Softly, deftly
Msic shall surround you
Feel it, hear it
Closing in around you
Open up your mind
Let your fantasies unwind
In this darkness which
Uou know you cannot fight
The darkness of
The music of the night

Let your mind
Start a journey through a
Strange, new world
Leave all thoughts
Of the world
You knew before
Let your soul
Take you where you
Long to be!
Only then
Can you belong
To me

Floating, falling
Sweet intoxication
Touch me, trust me
Savour each sensation
Let the dream begin
Let your darker side give in
To the power of
The music that I write
The power of
The music of the night

You alone
Can make my song take flight
Help me make the music of the night

Regarding West Side Story: the lyrics on the Broadway and movie soundtracks differ on several songs...not only on "I Feel Pretty" but also on "Officer Krupke."
