I feel bad

I don't consider family vacations a luxury. As I said, we learned that the hard way. God, family, everything else. That's our motto.

And I explained a lot of my philosophy in other answers....:confused3

I dont post too much especially on these kinds of threads:rolleyes1(seems people are very passionate about certain subjects) but I just wanted to say I am very sorry for your loss and agree with you 100 percent.

My dd(12) has a chronic disease while not life threatening per se-the meds have very bad side effects and have not been out long enough for long term results .We have had some tough decisions to make for the last 2 years.

I am willing to deal with the ramifications if I pull her out of school for vacation. We are going in August this year for different reasons but plan on an early December vacation in 2 or 3 years God willing she is healthy enough at that point.

The future is not certain for anyone of us and I find a vacation with my family a necessity not a luxury when hospitals are a weekly part of my DD's normal life. Our school does allow 5 excused family vacation years so it shouldnt be an issue but my DD missed 27 days this year-all medically excused. We do have a 504 plan in place.Granted she still gets A's and B's>if she was failing we would be allowed a tutor and I would not leave for a weeks vacation at that point.

Also not everyone gets tons of school vacation durung the school year.We get 2 weeks at Christmas -an extended weekend for Thanksgiving and a random 3 day weekend here and there. We start the end of August and end the beginning of June.My Dh cant get summer vacation usually.

I am not attacking anyone else's opinion. I just thought I would throw out another perspective. Everyone has a different parenting style and reasons why they may do it IMO:hippie:

I simply believe there should be flexibility within rules...just as a policeman can decide whether or not to issue the ticket, OR whether or not to lower the "charge" on it, there should be flexibility within a rule for different circumstances....Ie, if it's late for medical reasons, goofing off reasons, etc...

I think that if you go back and look at many pf the posts, people have said that they feel there is a difference between a student missing time because of:

  • parents who can only take vacation at certain times of the year,

  • students missing time because of an illness in the family,
or
  • when they simply miss time for a vacation because mom and dad want to go when it is less crowded or cooler.

To the poster that asked how much time my students get out:

long weekends at Labor Day, MLK day and President's Day
week for Fall Break, Thanksgiving, Spring Break
two weeks at Christmas

Plenty of time for a vacation.

I also agree with the statements about homeschooling, private schools and such. If you don't like the rules of a public school, you have a choice!
